Melted Wiring in GSL Battery - Any idea what went wrong here?

It's a simple issue of better or worse conductivity, where electrolyte conductivity is much worse then pure copper, so electrolyte which forms the short between 2 wires will boil off and evaporate much faster than wire would heat up to a point of burning PVC insulation.

Melted Wiring in GSL Battery - Any idea what went wrong here?

Also, when cells are overcharged to the point of leaking there would be other evidence, such as unmistakable, overbearing smell of electrolyte, popped pressure valves, signs of flowing and drying electrolyte, puffing of exposed cell surfaces, etc etc. Cell voltages would not measure normal...

Melted Wiring in GSL Battery - Any idea what went wrong here?

Leaking cells do not cause fusing of BMS voltage sense wires, there is no sensible connection between these events. Burned wires and burn marks on PCBs is inevitably a BMS design failure, some failure mode they did not consider when designing cell sensing and balancing circuits. In a normal BMS...

This is what 60KWH looks like

The most dangerous part of this setup is not LG Chem cells, it's those stupid balancers. If this setup ever goes up in flames I bet it will be caused by balancers.

What 282 kWh CATL LFP look like

Every decision is a trade-off, sometimes FETs work well, but in larger, more powerful systems contactor is simpler, cheaper and arguably more reliable, depending on application needs. Since those old days of DIY EV I have evolved BMS designs to pass strict UL safety and reliability testing...

What 282 kWh CATL LFP look like

I plan to build a similar home battery to yours, 51V 1320AH, 67kWh, so I can be completely energy independent, using solar/battery to power my home and 2 EVs. But first I need to build the home where this system will go into.

What 282 kWh CATL LFP look like

@yabert Those are very nice 16S blocks, perfect for a 48v house battery. You got very lucky with this purchase. You can easily parallel your blocks at the cell level by drilling and tapping those busbars in the raised center sections, then connecting in parallel with 10 or 8 gauge wires with...

    SOLD - 20x CALB CA180 used cells

I found someone to rehome my batteries, so these are off the market now.

    SOLD - 20x CALB CA180 used cells

I have 20x very much used, but still perfectly working CALB CA180 cells, see pictures. Their current usable capacity is about 140AH each, these cells are 8 years old and have been used as a solar storage bank. If put together in 4S5P configuration you will have a 12V 700AH battery bank, around...

[SOLD] Xantex Freedom SW 3012, 12V 3000W inverter charger (Sacramento)

If the price is an issue, make me an offer, whatever it's worth to you, I'll consider it. I'll be moving soon and I don't plan to bring it with me. I'd hate to dump it in the landfill, it's like new in perfect working order.

Unusual leaking battery failure, anyone seen something similar?

BTW, electrolyte in LFP cells is not dangerous, so it wouldn't do much harm in residence, other than a stain and annoying smell.

Unusual leaking battery failure, anyone seen something similar?

Cell doesn't seem to be bulged, so it didn't crack from pressure, the crack must have been there all along and just finally started leaking. Could have been damaged in shipping and not noticed until now.

How to keep Lifepo4 cells balanced without charging to 100%

It's the opposite. 3.4V is "in the knee" if your charge current is very very low, making it impractical for most applications, hence the need to go higher in voltage at higher charge rates.
