Does an MPPT solar controller turn excess voltage into Current/Amps? If my solar panels create 21V @ 7Amps and my battery only needs 14.2V to charge. What happens to the excess voltage? Is it just wasted away by dumping into a heatsink or is it converted into additional current/charge?
  • Post in thread: Does an MPPT solar controller, turn excess voltage into Current/Amps?

It just seems that I'm struggling to get a straight answer to my original question. I do apologise for my limited understanding of electrical current flow and exactly how Volts/Amps/Watts work. However, I've done my best to get some understanding of DC electrical theory. But I sit here and ask...
  • Post in thread: Does an MPPT solar controller, turn excess voltage into Current/Amps?

So, from what I have read from the replies to my query and from the pictures posted above. (Which I am so very grateful of) It would seem rather clear that the excess voltage generated by my solar panels (That being voltage over and above what the MPPT solar controller, has been programmed to...
  • Post in thread: Solar panel wiring for maximum efficiency.

Indervidual solar panel specs: Voc: 18.88V (Voltage Open Circuit) Vpm: 16V (Voltage Power Maximum) Isc: 7.58A (Amps Short Circuit) Imp: 6.88A (Amps Maximum Power) Max system voltage 500V My question is. I have 4 x 110w solar panels. I have wired 2, pair, in series (= 32V @ 8.88A) and then...
  • Post in thread: Solar panel wiring for maximum efficiency.

I am so very grateful of your reply's however I am still a little confused (Not understanding the shorthand algorithms). However, I've been caught up, in an 'in person' debate. With some vanlife friends. Who are adamant, that I have wired my panels up foolishly. They claim, I should of wired all...
  • Post in thread: Max input voltage/amperage for MPPT charge controller

Thank you for your reply. I think I have it figured out now. :-)
  • Post in thread: I'm wondering if anyone has???

Sorry for the enigmatic subject line. I couldn't fit the entire query in. I have a 12V nominal solar setup, în my VW campervan. 2 x 110W solar panels on the roof, wired in parallel, a German Votronic 350W solar controller, and a DIY Lifepo4 battery bank, consisting of 4 x 3.3V nominal Winston...
  • Post in thread: I'm wondering if anyone has???

The two relays come in one package https://123electric.eu/products/123smartrelay/ One relay, shuts off the load power out to the consumers, should the drain on the battery get too low. This is configurable via the BMS. The is also a hall-sensor to measure the amperage on this line as it leaves...
  • Post in thread: I'm wondering if anyone has???

By setting solar controller charge voltage lower than the BMS cut off. Wont this stop my battery from fully charging? Post the current voltage setting for best answers. The BMS 'Voltage Balance' or V balance, is presently set to 3.50V per cell. 3.50 x 4 = 14V The BMS 'Voltage Max' or V max, is...
  • Post in thread: I'm wondering if anyone has???

I did have the Solar Charge controller voltage set to 13.6V or 3.4V x 4, on both the BMS and Solar controller. However I also have a DC2DC B2B Votronic charger connected to my vehicles alternator and it's LifePo4 charge profile, is set to charge up to 14.6V and cannot be changed. So I had to...
  • Post in thread: Lensun

Lensun, are a Globally rising contender in the Solar and general PV market. However, I have had some pretty upsetting experiences with them as a product, and as a business. Firstly, they claim that their solar panels carry a two year warranty. That might hold water, if they actually issued a...
  • Post in thread: I'm wondering if anyone has???

I see where your coming from, however, if I run the Solar controller at a 13.6V charge profile, then my LifePo4 battery will not charge to 100%, so I feel I might be kinda defeating the original object, of retaining power in my battery to pretty much the last ray of sunshine, before the...
  • Post in thread: Lensun

Thank you, Bob, actually the saga continued. However, one question. Who would you recommend Bob, as a stand-up, honourable company, that stand behind their product, with a two year or more warranty, selling, 'all black' , flexible 110W Sunpower cell, solar panels, no wider than 54cm, in Europe...
  • Post in thread: Lifepo4 BMS High-Amp Relay, battery cut-off. Question.

Thank you for your input keith, I have to admit, I did find it a little difficult to understand what you are trying to convey. I am aware of the limitations of SCC's (Solar Charge Controllers, depending on their specific specifications) However, here is my present setup 2 x 110W SunPower/Lensun...
  • Post in thread: Hi all, I've been living and traveling Europe, in a VW T5 Campervan for 3 years now. I'm originally from the UK, however lived in the US for some time

My name is Paddy. I am originally from the Wirral, in the North West of England. I lived between NOLA La, Tampa Fla, and Asheville NC in the US from 1990 to 2017. I came back to the UK in 2017 and purchased a VW T5 campervan, with the intention of traveling as much of Europe as I possibly could...
  • Post in thread: Lifepo4 BMS High-Amp Relay, battery cut-off. Question.

Thank you Steve for the very valuable input. My SCC (Solar Charge Controller) is a German made Votronic unit. Middle market grade, not quite as fancy as the Victron's. So, I have to wonder, if the issue of connecting the battery after the solar PV panels, is such a big issue, with higher quality...
  • Post in thread: Lifepo4 BMS High-Amp Relay, battery cut-off. Question.

I have a 12V LifePo4 100Ah Winston Thunderbolt 4 cell unit. Connected is a Smart 123\SmartBMS and a 123\SmartRelay. The relay, cuts off either/or, the load or the supply if one of the cells should overheat or the battery cells should become unbalanced in their discharge or their chargng. My...
  • Post in thread: 123\SmartBMS USB data to Victron cable, self made

Has anyone made their own 123Smart BMS USB to Victron Venus running on a RaspberryPi, cable? I understand the manufacturers cables use an optocoupler to isolate the two circuits for safety reasons, however, is it possible to live dangerously and just run a straight USB cable from the...
