Hello and Happy new year ,
I have a boat where i live on , i would like to replace my batteries to lithium.
Following you tube ,i will need 400/450A batteries bank, i am old and when i want to buy batteries or they all gone or their price almost double when you do a speech on them.
My question is should i go for 12v battery like battle born or DIY batteries where i can put a bms on?
Subsidiary question do you have an address where i can buy batteries ?
Sincerely
Alain

Well, that depends on several things, including your budget! I am making my system right now, and have 2 Battle Born Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. Will, the owner of this site, highly recommends them and many others too. If you can afford them, buy them. (they are always in stock and have good customer service, great warranty, no tax and no shipping fee): https://battlebornbatteries.com/ Have you looked at Will's blueprints here: https://www.mobile-solarpower.com/diy-solar-blueprints.html

This decision boils down to personal preference. Buying a pre-built battery offers you:
  • Known good quality
  • Plug-in and go convenience
  • Warranty and support
Building your own offers you:
  • Cheaper than above
  • Satisfaction (of building your own)??

Will's website is a good place to start. Amazon and eBay would be other channels. In the UK there are many online battery retailers, I assume it's the same for the US, Google 'online battery retailers'. You might also want to visit your local boat shops, they can usually offer advice too.

I know that you've said, "i would like to replace my batteries to lithium. " so I assume that you've already made up your mind to do this, I would, however, say that one of the principle reasons to switch to Lithium is the significant weight saving against comparable Lead Acid batteries and on a boat this really doesn't matter that much. A typical 100AH Lead Acid would set you back maybe $50, a comparable Lithium would be $1,000. That's a big difference. With one of the principle advantages of Lithium not really being relevant to your needs, are you sure switching presents enough value to you? (rhetorical).

There’s more to consider than startup costs. This Will guy explains it better than I could ever hope to

I largely understand and can fix anything that I built. I am not "old" yet but starting to line up my stuff getting ready for when I must do less physically and financially. Knowing you can replace a cell in a bad battery would give me more options that off the shelf products.
