Where are you guys getting that altitude? Seriously " 60,000 ft" is not a recorded limit. A limit for what?

The russians were putting ppl in weather balloons attachments many many years ago.....

There was a guy that went up and jumped from a weather balloon..... parachuted. One guy reportedly took a bb gun and shot a few of his balloons out to descend. I don't remember their altitudes.

The Roswell incident was supposedly a weather balloon.

In this context we're talking about the recorded ceiling height for the F-22 Raptor, which is what was reported to have shot the missile that took out the balloon. My point is that the Air Force doesn't want anyone to know what the upper limit is. If they were to have gone up to the level the balloon was it to fire the cannon, it would confirm a new upper limit rather than the 50,000' limit that is on the Air Force webpage.

No, they're not.

But even the Global Hawk can reach 60,000 feet..

60k isn't that high up, which makes me think the balloon was in fact, just a fancy weather balloon. If China wanted to spy on us in such a fashion, it stands to reason they would use something that could not be easily (cheaply) shot down.. hence, they would have gone for a balloon that operates at 100,000 feet or more. At that 100k altitude, I think we'd have to use a ballistic interceptor missile because I don't think steering fins work up there, you need actual thrusters or an articulated liquid fuel rocket nozzle, and there's a big difference in price for those..

Fighter planes have used use 50,000 feet as max altitude for a long time. The reason for that is by their regulations you need to wear a pressure suit above 50,000 feet. In a rapid depressurization scenario, above a certain altitude your blood boils without a pressure suit on. But the fighters can go above that, especially the ones with larger wings like the F 15.

Having come from an aviation back ground Military required oxygen above 14,000 feet. Reason why helicopters don't go above about 14,000 ft - is power and the turbines are hard to control - keep from self destructing. The SR71 now work for NASA and if memory serves me they wore a space pressure suit. Most pilots use a g suit and physical training to deal with G forces. Some of the new drones can exert more then humans can stand. Different from altitude but still aviation relevant. Unmanned planes are extremely possible only FAA requirements of a pilot on board commercial jets require human pilots to be on board. I remember reading popular mechanics as a kid describing these things and everyone called bs.... haha I grew up on popular science and popular mechanics

I suppose the view from 100k is not as good as that to be had from 60k altitude. There’s a reason, after all, that they’re flying their cameras from a balloon rather than just using the ones they already have on satellites - because the lower you get the clearer the view.

I would have hit the like button twice on that if it would let me... but I'm probably biased as my wife comes from Ukraine and my mother-in-law, (who is very cool), lives in Kiev.

You owe them nothing? Ukraine handed over their nuclear weapons in return for security agreements with USA. So, yes you do owe them.

This war might feel a long way away from American shores. But it's happening very close to NATO borders. Not that I'm sure that concerns you either.

Just to put it in proportion, Poland alone has just put in orders for 10bn for Himars, 4.6bn of F-35s and 1.4bn for Abrams. Let alone the massive increase in LNG sales. And not a single US soldier has been put in harms way.

Exactly my position here as stated. The ADMIN allowed them run of the place and to talk to ppl however they felt. Now someone is doing it back ..... oh the horror. Click that button and Go melt the ADMIN stated "this is a BASEMENT forum for snowflakes"

The best part if we as tax payers finance the sale of weapons then we no doubt will offer a loan to the country that buys them for the purchase.

This is how that scheme works: .... we give Israel billions of dollars every year ... in return we do it up front for the payment ..... they give it back as a loan where we then pay them interest and RE -payments each month .....for around 12 months. LATER we give them billions again the VERY next year so the whole process can begin again. No doubt Poland wants some of that action too.
