    Off Grid desert nest

The quick and dirty hit 910wH today. Worked on mounting the Midnight Solar mini baby box and 2 Victron 100/20 mppt's. Mounted to a 1/4 inch thick sheet of aluminum. Since I haven't decided whether to mount the plate flush to wall I went ahead and counter sunk flat head screws. The mini baby box...

who is still burning wood in april?

Stone fire ring, not much control over embers. When I can like sit there with morning coffee and watch the sun rise.

    Off Grid desert nest

Dug into the existing solar on the new nest. What a mess, 10 awg from cc minus goes to some kind of terminal I never seen before. 2 - 22 awg leave and go somewhere. CC was showing 7 amps to batteries but there was a good 2/10 volt drop. Disconnected panel input, corrected battery wiring and...

who is still burning wood in april?

Had to put the morning fire on hold, red flag warnings and gusts to 60 mph.

    Off Grid desert nest

Mine is the PWM, got msview and instructions. At this time we have no plans to change anything on the motorhome. The new nest is a different thing. We have 4 100Ah LiFePO4 and 2 Victron 100/20 mppt cc's to use there. Also a 3000 watt inverter. The new nest came with a 30 amp go power pwm...

    Off Grid desert nest

Been at the desert nest for almost 3 weeks. AGM house batteries survived the winter just fine. Marginal AGM cranking battery also survived. A few minor fitting leaks to tighten. Must not have gotten every drained. New nest is due in Saturday. It has a few nice things, both refeers are 12...

Upgrading AGM to Lithium in RV and retaining slide and awning safety features.

Some wiring diagrams are on the Thor forums. Also I had some emailed to me by tech support.

Extra/Auxilary grounding rods..... Don't do it.

3 way is how we did it at the power plant I worked at over 20 years ago.

Upgrading AGM to Lithium in RV and retaining slide and awning safety features.

On our 2016 Axis the slide and awning are interlocked with the E450 ignition system. If ignition is on can't open the slide or awning. Relays are located below drivers seat reached through outside storage. The Trombetta is only used when engine is running to charge house batteries. I removed...

    Melted fuse holders

Cartridge type fuses are the worst for that type of failure. I use breakers or for fuses MRBF. The MRBF fuse isn't meant for that application.

Wondering why're many people still building 12/24v system ?

Some of us can no longer pick up 100# batteries or handle 4ft x 4ft 50# panels.

Financing available for DIY residential grid tied systems?

Just saw my first solar scam. The ad shows to watt hour meters, one on left shows $250 per month without solar and the one on the right showed $15 per month with solar grid tie. Not here in FL. I should have kept the web address to post here. Edit, here is link to suspect scam...

    Circuit Breaker Issue

Bluesea or Bussmen in that style breaker. MRBF for a fuse or maybe class T. I don't know if Midnight solar has a breaker that size, I prefer them.

1/0 gauge 300 amp rating or not?

While testing a 3000w inverter with the 1/0 6 foot cable that came with it. At 270 amps after 5 minutes it was almost hot enough to burn you. Get 4/0 105C cable.

    Convert Upgrade Mistake

Not always true! I've had three RV's so far that had DC black wire as positive and white was negative.

Controller going into and not exiting from under-voltage mode.

It will take days to do so without any draw from the battery.

Controller going into and not exiting from under-voltage mode.

    1. Not enough panel. It is for maintaining battery at or near full charge. 2. Charge curve for AGM are different then flooded batteries. 3. At 11.3 volts the battery is dead, anything below 12.2 to 12.4 is below what you want. AGM's typically like 14.8 volts to charge.

Epoch 460 12v a simple drop in for RV?

The converter will need to be replaced. A DC to DC for lithium charging between tow vehicle and camper. Charge wiring between camper and tow vehicle may need to be heavier. While changing out the converter you may want to upgrade to heavier wiring between battery and DC distribution panel...

Been to that rodeo. Added 2nd 105Ah battery to a 160 watt system with 10 amp pwm cc.

Eco-Worthy 100w Bifacial panel purchase, shipping and eventual installation review.

It isn't just Fed Ex, my 4 Newpowa came USPS and one box looked like it was hit by a fork from a fork lift. Panels had no damage and met both Voc and Isc.

    DC MCB vs Megafuse

Fuse or breaker should be 1.25 times Ah rating of battery to protect wires. 1.25*150=187.5. Round up to 200 amp fuse or breaker for proper protection.

My thoughts so far on Aolithium batteries

Ran into something interesting. If I use the Overkill app to turn off discharge and turn it back on where the BMS was reporting 100% SOC it drops to between 92 and 94% which agrees with the BMS voltage vs soc table. Finally got one battery above 3.4 volts on all cells by turning off discharge...

Do NOT discard a Dead Victron MPPT 100/30 or its kind

Now you have me wondering if the one (100/20) I left with 480 watts panels has died in the desert. No smoke on the security cameras yet.

Off grid grounding question (yes another)

I have planned a ground rod at my shed. 30 amp breaker panel with all earth grounds through it to the ground rod. Inverter and CC earth grounds to the breaker panel ground point and at least 8 awg from the panel to the ground rod.

High power fuse question... too many?

I used MRBF fuses. 125 amp for each battery to busbar and 300 amp from busbar to inverter.

    Off Grid desert nest

Tested the inverter yesterday and the smart shunt reported 3420 watts for 5 minutes. Guess I'll call this a 3000 watt inverter. Last October we were given a quote of $40k installed for a 25 kWh system. So far I've got about $3k in a 5kWh system and really only need 15kWh max. Now to drag it...

My thoughts so far on Aolithium batteries

Hooked 4 batteries in parallel and while testing 3 kW inverter pulled 1.7 kWh from the bank. Final recharge was 2 kWh. Towards the end ran into cell over voltage. Seems to be cell 4 on all 4 batteries. The BMS does shut down charging. This the first time to get all cells near the 3.417 volts...
