OK if we can see aurora here in Ohio tonight that would be fun.

    Rethinking my battery box

I ordered a set of cut to size carbon steel plates from onlinemetals.com. Inside I'm using some short pieces of unistrut to reinforce the plate and give me a mounting location for my BMS using channel nuts and screws. I thought maybe I'd have enough to put on the outside, but between 2 boxes...

    Rethinking my battery box

Can you tell how thick those end plates are? I can add reinforcement like that, but not sure if the flat wall itself needs to be thicker.

    Rethinking my battery box

Ok I can't seem to find a good answer on this. How thick should a compression plate be? Is the 16 gauge steel of the box good enough? I was going to press the cells up against the end of the box (with an insulating layer of course). I am not looking to squeeze the crap out of these cells, juat...

Dielectric grease on cable lugs? Lets test!

It comes from a misunderstanding of what "dielectric" means. Stole this from online. "A dielectric material is a poor conductor of electricity but an efficient supporter of electrostatic fields. It can store electrical charges, have a high specific resistance and a negative temperature...

    Heat Pump water Heaters

My parents had an AO smith. it worked fine for a very long time until it finally sprung a leak. Never had an element failure. My old house had a 4-5 year old Whirlpool that leaked. They wouldn't warranty it under the 6 years warranty because I wasn't the original purchaser. Rheem warranties...

    Heat Pump water Heaters

I guess I totally do not understand why the heck I'd ever want to access my water heater from anywhere. Only place I want to access it is either the hot water from the shower head, or get to the physical tank to replace it whenever it needs replaced. I've used/installed standard old Rheem...

Running 240V water heater on 120V?

Would it work? Yeah. Code compliant? Not really. Water heater through what effectively looks like a light switch would at least raise eyebrows. Would I do it? Probably lol. I used 3 way switches as my method of switching 120V circuits from grid to generator.

Are microinverters with battery supply a thing?

Short answer - they can't. If you're not looking for backup power, but to offset your power usage - especially if you have favorable net metering agreements with your PoCo (I have 1:1) - they are super easy to implement because they take care of a lot of shading issues, rapid shutdown issues...

    Rethinking my battery box

Yes there's plenty of room for that. I would just have to figure out how to attach it. I don't expect to move these boxes much, but reality is they will need moved if we move to another property sometime, so I'm planning ahead for that a bit. Which, on that note, I'm thinking of buying 4 of...

    Rethinking my battery box

Yep I just have smaller cells so they don't fit as snug. I also do not want them on their sides (I know they say it is OK I just don't like it). I'm thinking I can simply get some 16 gauge sheet metal at the store, cut it to length (maybe an ugly edge but w/e), and use some L or C channel to...

    Luyuan battery case

She responded to chat already. Basically just under $550 for two boxes shipped with modifications to support the EVE 230Ah cells and mounting my JBD contactor BMSes without screens. I'm debating whether to do that or keep going with my attempt at the other boxes. Wife is unsure on $

    Rethinking my battery box

Looking at this again I'm wishing I had a good way to cut steel plates nice and square. Would make life much easier if I had that ability. Was thinking maybe I could use some L brackets and something like unistrut or square tube or angle iron to provide some rigidity, and figure out how to...

    Luyuan battery case

I started an Alibaba chat with Amy trying to get info on the feasibility of 230Ah cells, and what the boxes cost shipped to my ZIP. She never responded to the inquiry sent through her luyuanbattery.com website. Hopefully she responds, and the price passes the wife test (though she's totally...

    House burned down

And to mitigate an accidental cascade leading to lights out and to enable some level of servicing, it would be quite simple to make each pack limit a bit higher, so you could in theory take a pack or two offline for servicing and not have to worry about it.

    House burned down

BUT 3V difference isn't going to sustain an arc across the the fuse. Even if you were dumping 500A, that's still only at 3V and the mega should never have a problem breaking that at only a 3V potential difference.

    Rethinking my battery box

So some boxes arrived. They're a bit heavy, which is good (and bad, if I ever have to move them after assembly lol). Nice and roomy. Remember these are the 24x16x12. The steel is plenty thick and sturdy. Some interior measurements real quick, without and with the mounting plate. A pair...

    QO vs Homeline

I keep seeing this thing about insurance inspectors and insurance not paying if things aren't UL or whatever... But has there ever been a single case recorded of that happening? I mean, how many doo-dads from Amazon do people buy, plug in, and use, that are not UL listed (and they have no clue)...
