Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

Yes, since this is a graph of the inverter's 120V output, the gaps are expected because the inverter was off and voltage was zero. Other graphs of other aspects of the system are complete because there was enough power from the panels to run the Cerbo.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

No I don't think so. My buddy never went into the equipment room, he just pulled the disconnect outside

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

I finally figured it out, had to go with Safari rather than Chrome.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

Well I guess I am fated not to get an answer to my question...I registered and filled out the Ask A Question form but the Captcha blocks the button to Post. Tried a couple different browsers, tried tabbing through the fields to select the Post button, all to no avail. There is obviously a lot of...

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

I am not familiar with that, is that on this forum or somewhere else?

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

That sounds right. Impedance was the word I was looking for. I wonder if there is a certain amount or if any amount would trigger it, e.g. tripping the breaker on a small circuit. It would be interesting to try but I would not go about it in the same way.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

I can only think that there must be some undocumented feature that monitors a change in potential loads and triggers another restart attempt. IDK, I just know it wasn't coincidence that it fired up untouched right after he pulled that disconnect.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

Yes that is right. The AC disconnect was pulled and that's it! The inverter was inside the cabin and wasn't touched.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

No, I don't think so. There was nothing running because the inverter had shut down completely. The battery voltage had been rising steadily all day as the pack recharged.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

Yes, I clearly saw the failed restarts and then the shutdown. I had one low battery alarm which happened at the point the inverter shut down. What made me curious is that the unit restarted in the afternoon when the heat pump load was removed. My friend did not go inside and reset the inverter.

Victron inverter restart surprised me. How did it know?

I’ve read that Victron inverters will shut down after a couple of failed restarts and I saw that this weekend when I mistakenly left the heat pump on and drained the battery. In the morning when the solar chargers started up, the Multiplus II tried to restart a couple of times and then shut...

Pioneer Diamante 9000 BTU Mini Split Installation Notes

After seeing stories of mini split installations on this forum (especially @timselectric) I decided to install a Pioneer 9,000 BTU system in our off grid cabin. This isn’t a step-by-step guide, just some of my impressions and notes for the next person who may be considering the same type of...

Off Grid System in VA Mountains with Cameras

Thank you, I am really enjoying it. So far the hardest project has been the drain/vent side of the plumbing.

Off Grid System in VA Mountains with Cameras

Last week I installed a Pioneer 9,000 BTU Diamante mini split. I am going to write up a separate post on the installation experience and lessons learned, but in short, it works well and I am really happy with how it turned out. I am especially impressed with its low power consumption. It can...

Honda eu1000 going into overcurrent protection with two Victron 25 amp chargers

Thank you RC, I believe this is on the right track regarding the peak VA load. Appreciate the thoughts and the schematics. Very helpful!

Honda eu1000 going into overcurrent protection with two Victron 25 amp chargers

Thanks for the reply - I chose a heavy gauge extension rated for 20 amps and installed an inlet on the side of the cabin.

Honda eu1000 going into overcurrent protection with two Victron 25 amp chargers

Wondering if anyone has thoughts or suggestions on this --- There must be some factor I am not accounting for. I have two Victron BSC 12 volt 25 amp chargers on a Honda eu1000i generator to supplement the panels while I'm at the cabin in cold weather. The first day, the generator pushed the...

Dad Jokes (let's hear your worst! ;-)

My dad told me this at the dinner table one evening. Son, do you know how to catch a polar bear? No dad, how do you catch a polar bear? Well, you go to the North Pole and you cut a hole in the ice. Then you spread peas around the hole. When the bear comes to take a pea, you kick him in the ice...

    Newly installed RPS 200.

Thanks for that feedback. At some point the leathers on the windmill pump will need to be replaced, and when that happens I think I will make the switch.

    Newly installed RPS 200.

I would be interested in hearing how this is working out for you. I have a windmill-driven pump that I am considering converting to solar and I have looked often at the RPS system. They have a lot of info on their site but I'm interested in getting some firsthand accounts from owners who've...

What's the best solar-related item you bought in 2023?

I used rubber pads between the mount brackets and stainless steel screws.

What is your favorite off grid device-appliance-gadget?

The rural phone coop provides wireless broadband service and I was lucky enough to be in a spot that has line of sight to their equipment office down in the valley. Straight line distance is about 3/4 mile. They put a high gain antenna on the cabin and one on a pole outside their equipment...

What is your favorite off grid device-appliance-gadget?

I like pretty much everything I've ever bought for our off grid cabin but my favorite items are still the first ones I installed -- the wireless broadband connection and the cameras. Of the cams, the Lorex 360 cam is my favorite because I can see about 270 degrees of the property from one...

What's the best solar-related item you bought in 2023?

I did several upgrades this year but I think my favorite thing was a stack of pressure treated 2x4s. I used those to build new panel racks so I could relocate them from the front of the cabin to the roof of a nearby shed. That cleaned up the look of the property by a lot and the panels perform...

Heat Pump Vendor Reviews (US Edition)

Have you installed your unit yet? I chose the Diamante Ultra 9000 BTU version/120 volt for a 12x12 off grid cabin room. I am really looking forward to seeing the power consumption numbers in heat mode. It is going to get a good workout when I put it in. I bought it directly from Pioneer on Black...

Hey we added a turbine to our all panel setup - short video

That's interesting. We're at the north end of a long SW/NE valley in the Appalachians and we get a LOT of wind at our location. Our water is pumped exclusively via windmill. I have toyed with the idea of adding wind turbines because we seem to have highest wind speed when it's cloudy, and it's...

Off Grid System in VA Mountains with Cameras

One year later I laugh now when I reread "I don’t have immediate plans to make changes to the system." Ha! So after a year, I decided there *were* some changes I wanted to make. The refit was a lot of work, but having lights that operate with flick of a switch, outlets where they're needed and...

    Off grid cabin ground plan

Thank you for this feedback. I wasn't sure about achieving ground for the solar panels by connecting to the sub-panel in the shed. I will amend the plan to just run the solar panels to those grounding rods and I will look more at the NEC grounding requirements for the sub-panel.

    Off grid cabin ground plan

That is a good observation, thank you for bring that to my attention. So if I allow the inverter to perform the N-G bond then I do not want a bond at the service panel, would that be correct?

    Off grid cabin ground plan

I've been reading all the discussions about grounding and bonding and trying to apply that to my off grid cabin set up. If you don't mind I'd like to ask if this diagram looks about right. My system is pretty simple, I do not have any grid ties or generators. I know a lot of people ask so I'd...

    Cabin Water System Components

I have been looking at RPS for some time and that is exactly the system I am considering. What do you do to control the water level in the cistern? Do you have a float switch or something that controls the pump? Did you use RPS panels or did you already have enough solar capacity that you did...

    Cabin Water System Components

I appreciate that perspective and I don't doubt it. I can see where an instant system could be more fiddly. Right now I have a Joolca (alias Camplux, alias Eccotemp) and once you get the hang of it, it works great. But it is not always a "facuet on, water hot" experience. I think since I...
