Testing a simple and cheap only fridge solar system

The Attiny is doing some more tasks than just actuating the relay: - it has to recognize the solar charger and battery status, looking how its 2 leds behave (not so simple for this old charger) - starts the inverter only when the battery reaches full state (and thermostat is on) and starts a...

Testing a simple and cheap only fridge solar system

You are right: thermostat is totally disconnected from 230V circuitry (and has to be if you want to protect your microcontroller) The compressor is directly connected to the inverter output. To start the fridge, just run the inverter (by its on/off switch, or from a relay output connected to...

Testing a simple and cheap only fridge solar system

Sorry for the time past since last post (busy with other things). Good news is the system has been working flawlessly all the time: the (used) car battery is still alive, not showing any sign of wear, AND I've been doing some measures, so -------------------------------------------- lets do...

Testing a simple and cheap only fridge solar system

Sorry for my late response. You are totally right about so much energy lost running the inverter in idle most of the time. It was one of my priorities to tackle this problem. The initial idea was very simple: as the thermostat is a simple switch, use simply this switch to start/shutdown the...

Some ways to run a fridge on solar energy

I posted initially this in the show and tell forum, as it was an introduction to my builds. No pics, so it was moved here. Now, here is my last (test only) build , just to demonstrate how it can be done with very current and simple stuff:

Testing a simple and cheap only fridge solar system

This is a simple offgrid isolated fridge system (not really meant for driving other appliances). It is also realized with very usual components, just added a custom control board (very simple though) As it is just a proof of concept, this test build goes a bit extreme : - 85W solar panel...

Some ways to run a fridge on solar energy

My chest fridge is DC, so has a build in inverter, and you are right, there is almost no inrush current. For inverter AC fridge, could be it depends on the brand/model, I read about people having problems with high current draw at starting.

Some ways to run a fridge on solar energy

Yes, I am only speaking about refrigerating. Nothing to keep frozen at all.

Some ways to run a fridge on solar energy

I have seen and read about soo many people having problems with fridges. Essentially because their inverter is not capable to furnish the inrush current, or because the battery discharges totally if for example you forgot the fridge's door open one night. Then, (in my case), the major...

Some ways to run a fridge on solar energy

Running a fridge from PV is not easy. But there is one very interesting point: generally, the more sun you have, the more your fridge will need to work. So PV production is quite related to fridge energy needs. This is why I think that cooling is one of the best PV uses. need storage You don't...

From Macaronesia, proposing an alternative solar approach

@efficientPV: Congrats, we came on the same idea, seems with similar good results. Still surprised why we don't see more info about such systems

From Macaronesia, proposing an alternative solar approach

Hi to everyone, joining this forum because it seems to be the best one to share some of my ideas (brought to work). I use to think a bit out of the box, looking for simple things I know can be done, without finding anything similar selled or described in the net. In such a case the only way left...
