Thanks,Dad, For Teaching Me to DIY Stuff

Good question. I had to use 80lb bags, because the 1000ft dirt driveway wouldn't allow a large delivery.

Thanks,Dad, For Teaching Me to DIY Stuff

I'm in the "dad didn't teach me shit" camp. In fact, I never met him. It stung here and there as a kid. But now in my mid50s, I can see that by not being around, he taught me everything. I was working and putting food on the table at 12. I am comfortable with all situations, I know I will...

Automatic system restart for air con

It seems you could use an old fashioned analog timer for this. The kind that looks like a clock that you set pins for on/off at certain times. It only works when the power is on. In your case, you could set the pins to power the unit on every hour or half hour without using the "off" pins. The...

    House burned down

I read the entire thread and have an uneducated question: I currently have 5 sok lifepo4 51.2 100ah units paralleled to a busbar, then a 125a class T fuse before the inverter. It seems a better practice is to have 5 class T fuses between each battery and the busbar. Assuming I'm correct so far...

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

Don't forget the okra! I installed a couple of hanging chairs yesterday, but instead of a pic of that, inspired by 420's view, I'll just post my current view from the new hanging chair.

EG4 Hybrid Air Conditioner Safety Disconnect

Wired mine (12kbtu) straight to a 20a breaker in the main service panel. Is this not enough?

    Solar panels cause bad weather.

Can confirm. We had a few weeks of high 80s and sunshine. Until I installed my new 12k btu minisplit. Since then, the temps have been perfect. Other than testing after install, I haven't turned it on.

    Switching between solar panel arrays

I have 3 arrays E,W,S (5.5kw total) paralleled at the combo box, to one 150/60 mppt. The arrays are positioned so the sun is shaded on one array before the next array picks up. I am working with a small opening in the trees, this works for me.

    Free Power is AWESOME!!!

You are describing something used in the home brewing hobby known as a keezer (keg+freezer). I have made many. I would not advise you to cut a hole in the side of the freezer for many reasons. The workaround is known as a collar. It's a band of lumber that sits snugly on top of the freezer, you...

Ok, I did a little research on them earlier and I didn't see that. They were either slid over the pipe end or into the pipe. I'll look into that, thanks.

Help me Install 3 EG4 Mini Split Solar Heat Pumps

I was going to use a cheap bending tool since I can't see how to use a spring while the tubing have permanent connectors. It seems the bending tool has enough room if it's used before mounting the unit. Or am I missing something?

Help me Install 3 EG4 Mini Split Solar Heat Pumps

I am currently taking steps to install this 12k unit and as shown, the tubing is routed backwards from the right side and has to be bent. I am deathly afraid of effing this up. Can anyone give me a clue about what worked for you?

Need a way to bottle or can excess solar production.

This makes me envision a future where electricity is used as "currency". I could see people carrying small, light, high capacity batteries and buying things with them. Later, it morphs into a central bank and a lithium standard is adopted. Cash is printed. Batteries will be rumored to be kept in...

Totally off grid, no grid backup. Generator didn't run all winter. Waiting on delivery of EG4 12kbtu hybrid minisplit so I can say the same thing after this summer.

Suggestions for whole house off-grid system?

I built a 1300ishsqft offgrid semi-underground house in the woods. It sounds like you are basing your usage on former homes. You don't like that life, that's why you want to move to the woods. Don't take that life with you or try to replicate it. You want peace, quiet, simplicity. After...

You missed the sand fleas, I missed Mt Mfer. 0411 Maint Mgmt Logistics, aka Rifleman, 2nd FSSG CLNC Spent 8 months on a ship during shield/storm, used as a decoy, ran landing drills in the Gulf to draw fire. What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

Hell, even cheap beer is expensive. I make 10gallons of a Miller Lite clone at a time, which is about 4.5 cases for about $9. The savings is real. ROI all depends on how fancy your equipment is and how much you drink. It's also not difficult to make any beer you can buy or imagine. My next...

Made 10 gallons of all-grain kolsch last weekend on a homemade brick rocket stove using whatever sticks I could scrounge off the ground. Works well, saves $15 in propane every batch and I'll never run out of fuel.

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

A few months ago, I found a Lion's Mane mushroom growing on a tree in the woods. I cloned it to Petri dishes until I had a clean culture. I used the clean culture to inoculate jars of sterilized birdseed and wood dowels. Now I'm growing Lion's Mane in my kitchen

Off grid incinerating toilets. Who uses one?

Another off-grid toilet option is a vermicomposting toilet. It's essentially a standard flush toilet plumbed to a 275gal ibc tote with woodchips and worms. Cost maybe $100 to build, no electricity, gas or pumping. See vermicompostingtoilets.net
