Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

Nice job! Surprised you had enough room to even put the charger in there! That's great.

First Attempt at DIY Grid-Tie Design

Ok… Another question. Is there an good way to survey for shade obstruction? I’m wondering if there is a Raspberry Pi script or anything out there that could monitor a panel output throughout the day. I’d like to get the optimal output from the E vs. W installation and do have some trees.

First Attempt at DIY Grid-Tie Design

Hi All! You guys were super awesome in helping me design and convert my Ryobi Zero-Turn mower over to Lithium. That post completely blew up and helped a ton of others as well. Well, now I am getting ready to install my first Solar System! It will be on my garage roof (unfortunately facing...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

Wow! That's a great deal! Sounds like you definitely have some weak batteries. Most of the drop-in replacements will work with little effort. Just make sure they are compatible with a 4S configuration (4 batteries in SERIES). However, you can probably build your own for half the amount of...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

@ryobilifepo4user Why are you using that tiny little charger? I think the proper procedure with "drop-in" LiFePo4 batteries is to hook them up in parallel for a few days (if supported) to let them balance. After which, just put them back in the mower and use the Ryobi charger. Yes, it may...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

I seriously cannot believe the interwebs sometimes. I started this thread with a question that I assumed was extremely niche but got valuable feedback. After which, I saw multiple people do similar builds (and some a lot better!) for the mower that I didn't think anybody else even had. Crazy...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

You should be fine. It's a little much for the LiFePo4. Actually charges at 56+ I think. But the BMS will cutoff prior. Only problem is that the Ryobi charger will sometimes go into an error state when the BMS kicks it off. That's what I found anyway.

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

Good job everybody! Just saw the new builds! They look great! Also, would like to report that I left mine off the charger all winter with the LED battery display powered and it basically didn't even budge. Ready to rock this year as well!

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

That's a wild configuraton for the Ryobis! Looks like it has (3) 80V 10 AH batteries on-board for 30AH runtime and then you can use their regular 40V packs and add 4 of those at 12AH a piece. That should give a total of 54AH capacity which they claim is able to mow 4 acres (at 80V). Likely...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

Mine was simply the charger connecting to the battery "live" and tripping the GFCI. I just make sure to attach the cable before turning the charger on and no problems occur.

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

@Nandologist I'm not sure where prices are right now but building it yourself shouldn't be twice the amount of money. I ended up spending $1100 vs. $800 for AGM. And I shouldn't need to ever worry about changing batteries again. I would get the use out of your existing batteries but if you...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

My wife was not happy either! I was really worried about DIY but really glad I did in the end. I was able to do it for just over $1000 and with very good components. Not much more than lead-acid. If you don't want to use wood, you could use a plastic with L-brackets for the frame maybe. I'm...

Ryobi Zero-Turn Mower SLA to LiFePo4 Conversion - (Updated - Build Complete With Pics!)

Oh... My bad. I just noticed those were 48V! I thought you were doing 4 12V batteries. I'm sure you can find another method of securing it.
