Lowest electric bill ever....

natural gas compressor stations run off natural gas fed engines-no outside electric needed
There's a relatively new one near me and they are using electric for it, no doubt pushed by NYs unachievable zero emissions plans

Just remember if you are in an area that can have a large scale natural disaster you can run out of gasoline and propane.
This happened during the last big ice storm here. 14 days without power and for the first half of that you couldn't get gas.

Wife was grumbling about some of the stuff I got solar wise. Power went out last night for 3 hours (remember I don't have batteries yet). She kept asking if I was going to get the generator out. I'm like I don't have the transfer switch stuff setup yet on this house.

This morning she was reminding me to order the stuff to get the generator hooked up :)

It will be here saturday....
That almost sounds verbatim as to why I have solar now.

Wife complaining about me buying solar and tinkering.

We move out here and power is off a lot.
Overhead lines.

The first night she had to spend without AC and a ceiling fan it was “When can you get this to work”?

If that’s not a Carte Blanche then I have never seen one.

$45 here. Just for the right to have electricity.
I’m not sure it can be called a “right” if you have to pay to have it…seems sorta like an oxymoron concept…. But then they probably don’t care…they have the upper hand in the game…

I trust you explained to SWMBO that the generator is incompatible with your solar stuff, so you really do need to order those batteries before the next outage ?;)

Despite others telling you that you'd be better off with more batteries, I believe you are doing right. I'm in the same boat and can only last off grid if we have some sunshine or at least thin clouds. However like you the price of another battery isn't justifiable at the moment. Maybe once the newer sodium hit the retail market at a far cheaper price then might be worth it. I personally so far and am in UK with mostly crap weather, have managed to only use 4 hours on grid this week and I'm well happy with that for such a small system.

Every time I mentioned batteries she brings up the green house she wants. So no batteries right now.

Yeah getting the generator working was kind of a required things since I have the 12k generator sitting there. I think everything I ordered was $300 or so.
I ordered a switch to start with and didn't like the idea of everything going thru it all the time with the way it had to be wired. I'll wait on a full auto transfer switch on that.

So I ordered another 240 volt breaker and a lockout kit. The subpanel the inverters loads are in has a 240 volt breaker in it for power coming in so I will put the new breaker across from it and the interlock mounts between the two.

Then I ordered a kit with the wall socket and a 25 foot 50 amp cable.

This should make setting up the generator easy enough.

If you dont pay the extortion fee then you can’t use electricity. So what would you call it?

Exactly what you called it…as that’s what it is…

” them that’s got shall get…the have nots shall lose… so the Bible says , and it still is true..”

God bless the child…… Blood Sweat and Tears…1969…

Then I spend a little cash on gasoline or propane to run my Harbor Freight generator hooked up to an EG4 Chargerverter.....
i have a few generators; one 16k generac and honda 3000eu. would love to just run the honda at 2000w with chargrverter on 48v bank for long term psp shutoffs here in ca. the generac is wired to my solark and worst case the honda can run for days on 10 gallons of gas.

Might be adequate with over 12 hours of sunlight, possibly not in the other 3 seasons.

My bank is large enough that if there isn't sunlight and we cut usage, I can run off battery for 4 days. My house uses nothing from grid, I have the breaker off.
Has the electric company come snooping around to find out why you aren't using any electricity? Or to see if their meter is working?

Shop is still on grid so I'm using a little more than half of what I did a few years ago. Over the years I've changed out to LED bulbs in the shop, that changed usage considerably. They also screwed me on their rebate program for the first half of the swap. I had purchased the bulbs the last week of December and didn't finish install until March. Turned in the form for the rebate and they wouldn't pay as their rebate states the bubs have to be installed within the same calendar year. It was about $400 for their half of the cost.

Meter is a smart meter, new within the last few years. Utility has been around quite a bit in last year installing underground transmission lines. They just set the transformers a few weeks ago and have to make the switch between overhead and underground before they will be done. I'm certain they have seen the array out back, hard to miss it driving down the road as it is 16 feet tall and 34 feet long.

Currently building a system for the shop, I guess they should have paid the $400 and stayed on my good side. Vengeance has a price. :)

as I posted elsewhere ...

Just got my February Xcel bill.... just about half of last year... temp was on average just a bit more so that helped, but saved 50% .. excellent...

This bill $97.... last year $183
Electric this year $25 last year $83
Gas this year $73 Last year $101

Yes! This thing is working. :)

Just got my true-up bill through February, $1676
Oh, you asked about the LOWEST bill ever.

Most of the past 20 years, true-up has been $zero. One time it was $700.
I'd been noting how much unused credits ($hundreds to low $thousand) were left unused end of the year, so this past year I ran electric heat even during peak times. Also left pool filtering continuously for weeks. By the time I realized I had burned through all surplus and was accruing a bill, it was most of the way through January.

I turned on the gas furnace. Flame came on briefly and went out. Flame sensor wasn't working, and replacing it didn't fix. I minimized use of heat until new control board came in. Had always resisted paying $125 or so for a new board, had been using a second hand replacement for a few years. But being able to heat with gas rather than electric pays for the board in less than a month.

Gas bill was $189. When not using furnace it is $10 for water heater and stove. Years back, I had observed heating with gas cost $80, vs. electric $700; rates are up.

For most of the 20 years I've had grid tied solar, bill has been around $10/month. Only two years did I owe at true-up. Works out to about $20/month on average. Need to be more careful, not aim so close to zero unused credits.

Mild San Jose weather, small house. But not good insulation; temperature drops quick when heater off. There are double-pane windows, but walls and ceiling mostly uninsulated.

That was San Jose. Oakland house (no PV yet), electric was $250 and gas $175. Think the roommates still used electric heaters in their rooms part of the month. It was $410 electric $185 gas previous month, too much electric heat.

I'm thinking about running a line from the nearest street light, to feed my Chargeverter. lol
I heard an apocryphal story about a farmer who had a large barn under some massive transmission lines......he set up what I believe is called an induction coil in the barn.......somehow they were able to detect the power lose and made him get rid of it. Don't know if it was true or even possible....but I like the way he thinks.

I have read about similar things.
It is definitely possible. If you can get close enough, or the magnetic field is large enough.
