Stupid problem department: I can't get the datalogger dongle unscrewed from the inverter.
The black ring with the grip texture seems to be solid with the grey body. I'm assuming it should rotate separately; is this so? Right-hand thread?
Any clever tricks needed?

Having put together a hardware box to tap into the RS-485, this is the next thing before trying to have Home Assistant talk to the Solis.

The ring should turn with a small amount of force. Make sure the stick itself does not turn. The mistake a lot of people make is to turn the stick and end up unscrewing the socket from the inverter and sometimes breaking the wires.

My datalogger is no longer connected directly to my inverter which makes it a lot easier to get to if I need to disconnect it.

A pair of moles, and hanging on to the body, did the trick.
It now works via the 485 hub.

Next up, getting SolaX on HA to talk via the other port on the hub, No joy so far...

Try this for the Solax

MQTT with HA auto discover.

I don't have an ESP32 to hand - but thanks for the pointer

Documenting for anyone else trying this - it turns out that the magic combination is:

- SolaX Inverter Modbus
- "solis" inverter type
- TCP/Ethernet comms
- Modbus-TCP

- Waveshare 2-ch RS-585
- the after-factory-reset config page for the second channel is on the same page as the first, but only after you've changed
the first one's IP away from the default 192.168.1.254
- 9600 8N1
- Modbus TCP to RTU
