How should I price Batteries previously purchased five months ago?

I have a lead on a "SOK 48V 100Ah PRO Server Rack Battery" via a Craigslist posting. I am being told it was purchased 5 months ago, but now not needed. I am being told that it was never used, but how am I to know that? I think he's had this battery listed for at least a few months as the posting has now expired, but I'm still in contact with the seller. He's been a little hard to respond to my questions as he says he goes back and forth between two states regularly, but I finally nailed him down to meeting next Saturday.

But I'm wondering what I should offer for this battery. His asking price is $1500 which really is nearly the new price. What would be an appropriate selling price for this battery that was previously purchased? I'm thinking that $1500, no way, I'd rather buy through a dealer. So, what should I offer him for the battery?

Also, do these batteries keep a log of history or usage? How would I test it?

EDIT: regarding this "federal tax credit" being mentioned in this thread. Battery is intended for a work van, not putting solar on a house, and not even putting solar on the van initially. Just want always available on demand battery powered over having to use one or two generators.

And batteries are intended for a MultiPlus II, and I was told here to use the 48v SOK Pro battery. Just FYI for those suggesting another battery.

assuming you can use the 30 percent federal tax credit on a new battery....
I know sok may be a better brand than eg4 lifepower, but the eg4 new is now $1150, plus tax. minus 30 percent.
I would not offer more than about 70 percent of what a new one cost after tax credit, so about 1/2 of what he is asking

Do you think everyone who buys these batteries gets the federal tax credit. Like that is something he probably got? I've not heard of this tax credit before. I'm still learning.

He is saying it's never been used. Is there anyway to test this? I've texted him to provide the serial number so I can check the warranty. I won't offer anything until I know that.

Just buy a new one and take the federal tax credit. Most BMS software keeps track of the number of cycles on the battery, but you'd need a laptop to connect and check it. The owner could also send a screenshot of this to you before you arrange anything.

I wouldn't offer more than $700 for it since you can get a new EG4 Lifepower4 for $1150 minus 30% when you file taxes which comes to $805.

But in another thread, I was told I need the 48v SOK Pro. I forget now why, but was told that is the one I needed for the MP-II.

And can I take a federal tax credit since I am installing them in my work van? Isn't this tax credit for putting solar on a house? I put an edit in my original post about this.

I typically don't buy anything used unless it's about half the Price of New.
There are some exceptions but batteries are not something I would buy used unless the price is really good.

I'm being told never been used, it is still in the box. Not sure if box was opened and re-taped. That it was bought for a project, that other plans were made, and it is now being sold unused in the original box. But of course, anyone can keep the box and repackage them. So I'd like to test it in some way.

You would have to ask the Dexter at Current Connected if the BMS has a Cycle counter.
Mine has one but I don't know about SOK. I don't know what your knowledge level is with LFP batteries but you need to to have a chart of Cell voltage vs SOC. The Cells should all be at least above 20% or 3.2V per cell x 16 Cells.
SOC vs Voltage Thread
You need to carry a Laptop with a RS484 to USB Interface and the SOK software loaded on it.

I would not buy this battery for asking price "Period".
If it was me and I could confirm the Cycles and the Voltages and they looked good then I might spend $900 on it.

Thanks for your input! Havn't used my old Window 10 laptop in probably 4 years. Better see if I can fire it up LOL

Sellers are pretty irrational about these things right now. Or maybe they're not, cause there are people out there who aren't going to take the tax credit and can't stomach paying $250 for shipping.

I would just buy a Lifepower4 and you get a new battery with warranty support.

Correct ….Half price at the most….unless it’s a special item with special uses and you need it…

But I'm being recommended this specific SOK Pro for the 48v MultiPlus II in a thread I started about a work van power source.

Do you know of any detailed videos showing the testing?

So then you're looking at like $1790 for a new one vs. $1500 for this one.

That may not leave a lot of bargaining power. We can all say we don't think it's worth more than $1200 or whatever, but he can hold out for other buyers like you.

I think he's asking too much for a used battery. Not enough savings in it for you to assume any risk. Prices are falling on these batteries right now so compare his asking price to the new cost right now. Current price new x .65 is what I would offer.

If you do not entertain the idea that you might pay his asking price than a meeting is a pointless thing. I hate people that throw low ball offers at me when I am selling something and they waste my time by not telling me ahead of what they might pay. Dickering over the price is a understood but generally that is a small range around 10% of initial price.

In your talks with this seller did any mention of price flexibility occur? If not, thank the guy for his time and move along.
