just talked to a dude about batteries, he seemed pretty knowledgeable until i brought up Battleborn. He knew nothing about them , so he looked them up and stated this:

"i see that they sell progressive chargers for their batteries which tell me that their BCM's do not have progressive charging technology bult into them so if you just stick a regular charger on the battery it will blow up".

He also said:

"thats the thing with lithium batteries, if the battery control module fails, you can have a runaway cell causing a battery fire. and you cant extinguish it, its self oxygenating so the fire only goes out when the fuel runs out. i dont know about you but i dont like the idea of a massive battery fire going on inside a van that im sleeping in.

He says all of this to defend his stance on AGM being safer.

ANY THOUGHTS?!?!

They are LifePo4 not Lithium Ion.
Big Difference as LifePO don't combust like LiIon… He's still stuck in history when cell phones etc overheated, melted down or just caught fire... ancient history given the speed of change going on.

Have a look at this thread and watch the video Will made.

Steve_S is correct. LifePo4 cells have a higher thermal and chemical stability than lithium-Ion cells. I’ve seen plenty of LiPo fires and simply puncturing a cell will cause thermal runaway resulting in a fire. Over charging takes longer and much incompetence to result in a fire, but it does happen if the cells are not balance charged. With a high quality charge controller and with the charge parameters properly set a LifePo4 fire due to overcharging is extremely unlikely.

@Steve_S I acquired some Lion Energy UT 1200s and have to charge them before putting in series, but only have my lead acid chargers, which they say is fine because it operates like a drop-in replacement. Been using 15A, and tried different settings.... SLA, AGM and GEL, because charger said full before battery said full, and i doubt that full on the battery meter (5 lights) is always 100% full.

I don't worry about a fire. But, it sure would be nice if we had a better guide on using a lead acid charger on a 12V drop-in LiFePO4 replacement. The voltage range is really weird (20% at 13V, 100% at 13.2V-13.3V, though peaked at 13.5V before settling), and I suspect that is the BMS doing some regulating, but not sure.

This is a one time thing because once they are in series, the 24V inverter will do all the charging, although having concerns about its ability to determine SoC accurately if the BMS is regulating.

Also remember that it is POSSIBLE that a jet flying over you can lose an engine and that engine pick YOUR van to land on. If you live because of something with HUGE odds might happen you may as well never leave your living room. Although your flat screen TV might suddenly explode and hit you with pixels..... I am sure somewhere in the world a lithium battery caught fire today. Someone else can calculate the odds that it will be yours tomorrow, but I wouldn't sweat it.

You just ruined television for me Ed, thanks a lot, now I have to listen to the Brown's lose on the radio and use my imagination which I haven't had to use for years, criminey.

After I went skydiving for the first time, my biggest fear became falling down steps, because that would just be the stupidest way I could possibly die. What a horrible funeral that would be to watch from heaven.

In 2000 in the USA, 1,300 people died falling down stairs. Compare that to 22 deaths per year from skydiving.

I wonder how many escalator fatalities there are?

Dont put your face too close to the radio, cause it might blow up and leave you scared for life. Then your wife leaves you and the neighbor's kids call you scare face. LOL

If the bms fails it disconnects the battery terminal stopping all charging. Not to mention your controllers limit. And AGM can explode too. Seems to be a theme of people holding onto lead and being overly emotional about the subject. I figure theyre annoyed they cant afford lifepo4 so find any nonsense to justify lead over lithium.

Edison executed elaphants to show AC as dangerous and people were terrified of internal combustion engines...a 1000 explosions a minute!!!

As usual this is all hyped by the corrupt media. When the airlines were having a probem with exploding batteries in scooters, phones etc. the media blew it up to make everyone think their phone was going to burst into flames at any moment. And the airlines didn't help it by bannig a lot of items from carry-on/luggage. But then the airlines also don't want you to use your phone while on the plane.

The Media loves Hyperbole when it sells their shlock, pick any newspaper and the verification is there. Also, it was Gov Regs dropped to stop air shipments of lithium ion cells / batteries. There is no more unbiased, un-prejudiced news anymore, it's more opinion & personal reflection with bias related to whatever subject is being addressed. W5H no longer exists. Who, What, Where, When, Why & How...

once, a long, long, time ago, when the world was simpler, a little slower and more thought out & reflective, sources were always named, or it wasn't credible news. Fact checking & verifying details was a part of writing the article, without it editors would disallow it being published. That gave way to Tabloidism with big catchy headlines, shock trooping readers to preformed conclusions and opinions while short on credibility due to lack of verification. We also had time to stop, think, reflect and consider what we read, saw and were able to use Critical Thinking to determine our own understanding & perception of the subject, today, it's coming in so fast with "Multi-Media / Social Media" no one even get's a chance to take a breath between opinion pieces. News Orgs HERD people with such manipulations, look around, it's visible, hiding in plain sight, if we actually choose to look at it..
