it often times self relocates when it has decided that the temp is too low in front of the woodstove. it starts out about 3 feet away and slowly moves closer as the fire dies down. once it hits a certain temp, it automatically crawls onto your lap to remind you that the stove needs restoking...regardless of your thoughts i might add!
