Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

The first name WAS going to be Little Willie (my contribution).... Some didn't like that name. Gee... That was a song and it was an old tank name among other things of the past. Since we were also working on the B17, with a WW2 theme, and Rosie the Riveter was a WW2 name, a guy on our...

Reverse protection diode on PV input to MPPT

A typical buck converter MPPT controller will automatically and intrinsically have reverse polarity protection due to the topology of a buck converter. The top FET has an internal diode with its cathode pointing to the PV+ input. And the bottom FET or diode will have its cathode pointing...

    New Tariffs in the States

Yep ! He wasn't going to stop a good thing for him. Especially as he wanted to spend more money anyway. I sure wish that politicians understood (or cared ?) more about how this stuff works. Oh well. They get paid the big bucks. boB

Thanks,Dad, For Teaching Me to DIY Stuff

I was really lucky that my dad was in Electronics and knew a lot of technical stuff. Including radio and music and photography that he taught me. I owe most of my interest and skills to him. But there were other mentors along the way, too. We all need mentors to help us complete our skills...

    New Tariffs in the States

And now Biden is adding to it and never did help US manufacturers by changing the original Trump tariff lists. It's bipartisan now. It might have been a nice idea with good intent originally but was not thought through by either party. The presidents do not understand how American...

    New Tariffs in the States

Yes, we have our factory in the US but use parts from all over the world, including China so we cannot put "Made in the USA" on the products anymore. A certain percentage of the product has to come from the US. That is pretty hard to do a significant part of the product with parts made in the...

Tariffs also hurt American manufacturers competing with China because we use parts that are made in China and nowhere else. boB

Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Five minutes wait time is ONLY for selling back to grid. That is part of UL1741 and IEEE 1547 standards that all grid tie inverters must abide by. It may be that the manual is not quite correct here in that if it is trying to say that the inverter won't power your loads until the 5 minute...

    New Tariffs in the States

Maybe it is because they have more EVs than we do ? I do know that BYD is certainly not 100% perfect in this respect. Here is the video where I heard about the BYD Blade batteries. Maybe it is only these particular batteries that had trouble ? And maybe they have fixed the problem ? BTW...

    New Tariffs in the States

I agree about not having politics here. Just remember, and I think you know, Aridom82, that the tariffs we have today are nothing new. 25%+ tariffs on Chinese goods started a few years ago. It really effects our production costs because so many components come from China. Gee, MidNite paid...

Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

I have checked HF and do get some birdies but we/I have not tried to improve it yet. Working on the B17 right now. I will say that the Rosie does not "wipe out" the HF bands like some equipment does. Rosie does have lots of common - mode filtering but I'm sure that mods will be coming to make...

    Can BMS damage MPPT Charger?

The problem happens when the PV input to the MPPT controller is higher than the battery voltage by quite a bit and lots of current is going out of the controller and all of a sudden the battery load goes away. The input side of the MPPT controller can go WAY up in voltage before it has time to...

    Can BMS damage MPPT Charger?

The software or hardware just has to be fast enough to catch this condition as the battery (load) goes away abruptly. This can happen with a lithium battery BMS when they "open up" due to something they don't like during operation. A lot of BMS's have a hard time staying connected it seems. boB

    HV DC-DC converter?

FYI, to add to your list of possibilities, there is a company that makes DC (and AC) fans for greenhouses etc. That will run off of solar and batteries. We have used them and worked with this company years ago. They are not cheap though. https://fogco.com/snap-fan/ Not sure of their highest...

Why the laser focus on Idle Power?

At least the PV efficiency is a bit better than it was 20 years ago so that space is a wee bit better used. And we still can't put enough solar on an electric car to power it, even if you drive where the sun shines. boB

Why the laser focus on Idle Power?

Idle power used to be a huge issue before PV solar panels became cheap. So was power draw of lights and appliances. People would have separate DC distributions just for lighting and things that could operate off of lower voltage DC just because PV was so expensive. Extra and phantom energy...

Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Maybe... Would love to do that ! 380V I think is the future for higher power stuff, at least. Some of these systems can get pretty big ! Sure it can be dangerous. I don't know how they handle that now but a few years ago, we had a HV LG lithium battery and one of our techs had to fly to...

Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

No. HyperVoc is actually the input voltage that the Classic will tolerate (not operate) at ABOVE its rated operating input range. For example, the Classic 150, which runs and starts up at 150V and below can tolerate (but not turn on) at the nominal battery voltage PLUS 150V. If you had a 48V...

Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Ryan said that the MPPT range is up to 550V but turns on as high as 599V. That means it can run in Absorb and Float charging modes at just below 600V... Depending on the output current requirements in those voltage controlled modes, it could be running at around 580V or 590V or so. 599V would...

    RFI issue

Sounds like you have done well here ! Remember that adding a LOT of turns through the toroid can increase the capacitance from one side of that filter to the other side and possibly have diminishing returns. From S8 to S1 is significant I would say ! Maybe we need to have a DIY ham net some...

Midnight introducing Rosie the Inverter and Barcelona & Hawks Bay SCC

I would say to check or re-tighten once more after the first install. Wait 1 or 2 hours (while you're there thinking about it) should be good enough. I had not seen the "once a month" part but I know that re-tightening/torqueing an hour later is sometimes necessary with the CBI breakers...

Hey everyone, another new idiot to solar mastery

The new solar idiot said: From what I read Tesla charging is a hassle because you cant run dc to dc car battery. It has to go from dc to ac back to dc. idk That's OK. Solar/PV is cheap and sunshine is free. You can eventually add more PV and get there. This is also my eventual plan. Hope...

    Runaway cells, sudden overvoltage

Are these batteries made to be able to put 4 in series to make 48V nominal ? The BMS's have a maximum voltage they can say, turn off at with other batteries in series. 36V + 12V = 48V so maybe there is something wrong with only one of those BMS/batteries ? boB

Does this 4 panel string have ANY shade on the panels at all ? That would certainly make the maximum power point lower.
