Making a pack from 9 year old Winston Thundersky cells

Yes 30kWh (rough estimation) is significant. But it might also be the case that I start using them and quite a lot of them die and it turns out to be more work. I guess I need some kind of single cell tester that is either quick (higher Amps) or cheap (to do more parallel) And I still would...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

Ah reviving this old topic. For now I have chosen to work with Victron. They can work with any solar inverter, and it really is a mixed bag of inverters. So no use in vendor locked-in solution.

Making a pack from 9 year old Winston Thundersky cells

I have almost 200 Winston Thundersky cells of 60Ah , about 9 years old. I think there is still for 80% capacity in them, so at least 30kWh to be used. However, some cells are probably not that healthy and will die quickly. They were never paralleled. What are acceptable internal resistance...

Deye Sun-12k-sg04lp3-eu weird Battery Discharge Behaviour when Battery Voltage is ABOVE Float/Absorbtion/Equalization Setting

I wouldn't expect to see imbalance quickly, only after a while. Anyway, I would just put active balancers on the battery and simplify the whole setup. That will save you lots of time. Anytime when the battery is going low or high, the active balancers will kick in.

Deye Sun-12k-sg04lp3-eu weird Battery Discharge Behaviour when Battery Voltage is ABOVE Float/Absorbtion/Equalization Setting

Well, you can configure the BMS can't you? So make the balancing start at 3.4v or 3.35 or something, and lower the float voltage. I think the float voltage is high if it is going to run like that, floating for complete summers. But it will still work. Your use case is of course not as intended...

Deye AC grid charging power spec?

I see the data sheets of the Deye hybrid inverters, looking at the high voltage versions, I cannot really get what the charging power is from AC (grid) to DC. There is a DC max charge amps, but the voltage can differ greatly, making it exceed the rated power of the unit. I would like to buy a...

Deye Sun-12k-sg04lp3-eu weird Battery Discharge Behaviour when Battery Voltage is ABOVE Float/Absorbtion/Equalization Setting

I cannot comment on your exact setup or issue, but in general, yes inverters can defenitely go in discharge mode when the actual system voltage exceeds the configured max battery voltage. I had similair behavior with Victron and the Multiplus settings. You force the top-off with your other...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

Well because of that last part I think it is good to never fully charged the battery. For now the next project is just a combination of a few small houses with existing PV, doing peakshaving. Nothing special in terms of surges. However, I will eventually run into more business use with more...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

@MisterB1959 Yes it is about not pulling new wires. Especially because distances become bigger and so on. Yes adding any kind of inverter in an AC coupled manner like you mention with SunSynk and tell it to keep the grid at zero or whatever, will work to some extent. But it is different from an...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

Well the great thing about Victron is I know how to work with them. So it is not only about quality but also about support, and not spending a lot of hours that was a bit cheaper to buy. I will look into SMA a bit more now. I actually would like to go to high voltage but only in freedom of...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

Thanks I will check them out. I should have written I am looking at this from a European perspective with EU grid code, meaning that all existing grid-tied PV inverters should indeed be able to work with frequency shifting. Projects usually consist of peak shaving and/or self consumption, but...

Which inverters can do AC coupled solar on LOADoutput?

I am finding it hard to google this, as you get so many irrelevant hits. This thread is specifically for AC coupling of Solar on the load output of the inverter Yes I prefer DC coupling too, and yes I know there are lots of inverters that let you couple AC solar on the Generator port (such as...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

@Plum Crazy Rob You mean you have the EG4 hybrid which looks like the Deye 48v inverter in terms of specs? How noisy is it on the inside and outside?

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

-5 or -10C is rare in these days but happens at least once a winter. Typically more like 0 to 10C I have been working with mini-splits which still provide a reasonable COP in those temperatures and typically keep working until -15C. The Hotspot also works until -15C I have read, but I would...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

You have different experience? With this Hotspot or other 48v DC minisplits? I am sure you can hear it, but the question is if it is acceptable or not

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

Looks like the go-to option for my situation but probably getting really unhappy shipping quotes. Maybe worthwhile to import multiple units for some other Western-European consumers / forum members

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

I have experience with mini splits and they can be quiet (inside unit) when at lower speeds. And there are big differences. 40 or 50db is very loud and unacceptable for longer periods. Values of 20 to 28db are quite common for lower speeds / quiet mode. For the Hotspot it says 26db for other...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

Yes it makes sense to have a 12 or 24v circuit for lighting, to have more options. But, these retro transparent filament LED bulbs use these LED sticks which are all 50v as far as I know. I think it would be great to have these bulbs but instead of 4 of these 50v sticks in series (for 230v AC)...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

For that one at least there is some data Indoor noise is 26db at the lowest. Which isn't very quite compared to 21db of Panasonic/Mitsubishi etc It says very little about heating. It mentions quite a low COP and no working temperatures are mentioned. That is kind of the school of thought for...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

@RCinFLA For now the goal is to use "off the shelf" 48v DC mini-splits. I say "off the shelf" because I need to import them, I haven't seen them in Europe. The 350v route is something that needs more of my attention, studying new NPR 9090 standard, that describes how to setup that up. What...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

Thanks for all the replies. Up until now I have been working with mid to high level split units, just AC powered, from Daikin / Mitsubishi / Panasonic to get a very efficient and quite aircon for heating and a bit of cooling. So I pick the ones that are reasonably efficient for heating. But I...

DC powered mini-split versus AC, efficiency worth it?

In recent years some DC mini-split airconditioners have come to the market. At least in China and US, here in Europe I would need to import them. And they might not comply to everything needed here, but let's leave that out of the discussion for now. There are the hybrid types, and there are...

    liquid cooled inverters?

Are there any low-voltage liquid cooled inverters around for 230v? Preferably around 48v DC input. There are several chargers that are liquid cooled, for example EV on board chargers, also for lower voltages. But I only see high voltage DC/AC inverters that are water cooled. If it was...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

In the meantime I found out that you can boot these blue inverters with the top two buttons held, you get into a firmware menu. In that menu, you can let it be anything (1000W or 2000W version, sun or wind). Of course some of these won't work because of different physical connections. But more...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

Yes I think they are off. But, at least it is an affordable wind turbine that can actually generate the 1500 or 2000 Watts in ideal conditions. As people have tested and shown on Youtube. It is much better than the other ridiculous claims made by other cheap manufacturers. Because at least...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

For the total picture it is good to think in kWhs consumed and produced to match it out. Right now I know what I am missing in the winter. But yeah, I already know this tiny turbine won't make up for all of that. What it could do, is just make up for my heating on windy days. There will be days...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

You can express heat loss of a house in Watts. In my case it can be 600W to 1000W heat loss, of course depending on outside temperature. Given the efficient heat pump it makes an average 750W heat of 150W electrical power. This tiny turbine might just do that, of course in windy days. This...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

@sunshine_eggo The discussion is not if this is useful. I'm perfectly fine with this not being useful, it would only prove my theory. The question is not if there is enough wind, the question is if my setup is okay. I am not saying it should do 600 Watts now, I mean that it could achieve that...

FX600 VAWT with SUN-1000G2-WAL-H, not starting

Hi all, Although I don't typically like small wind turbines, I live in a windy place and thought to test one out. I bought a second hand FX-600 Wind turbine which seems at first to work well. It is a sturdy unit and I actually believe the 600 Watt can be achieved. Now, I borrowed one of the...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

Yes. Well, I think the best way forward is to try and control the most sold inverters over here, through software or crude I/O on the inverter. That way you can at least serve quite a market share, the way it is intended. I agree with powering on several loads. I do that to at home. Water...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

Well, if following hourly pricing market, you can see the evening before if it will become a net loss or gain for that day. So yes, you could turn it off and on at night. It would be fine to cut it off at AC or DC, nothing is happening at that time. I would still prefer a solution which allows...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

Grid going down is not the use case I am talking about. Also @Hedges: Current situation has been there for several years. Whatever your solar array produces throughout the year can be deducted from what you consume in a year. Even though you produce most in the summer and consume most in...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

Well, it is not that hard to find DC contractors for 1000v and way more amps than needed. I think whatever is needed, you need to make it and have it tested/certified. You can find a lot of things, just like these rapid shutdown devices. But they are still intended, just like an AC cutoff, for...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

Ah sorry, you are right. That was perhaps not clear. The goal is to automate it. Based on hourly pricing or grid operator incentive. Thats why I mentioned the repeated times. So, whenever that is possible through software (hence the SolarEdge example) then that is the way to do it. But, a more...

    Disabling active grid-tied inverters

@zanydroid Inverters like Victron can do some modulation to turn down the power. Any European inverter should comply with this. If you take the bigger Chinese brands (Deye and copies for example) they use the generator port and just turn it off. They have to work globally with anything. But...
