Is BIG BATTERY full of Crap??

Ok. Bought one for $277.95, arriving Nov 24-27.

Is BIG BATTERY full of Crap??

Yes. What's a good way to control the exact temperature applied to the sensor from my dry ice? I don't want to put the dry ice's full (lack of) temperature on the probe, just incremental amounts either way. I don't quite know how to do that. I would need my own sensor to know what the other...

Is BIG BATTERY full of Crap??

I think it's obvious heaters need to be designed into these things along with the BMS and cells. It would do as you say: divert charging current to a pad, not charging the battery until it is to spec temp (let's say over 35ºF), and then ramp it up properly according to the spec sheet and state...

The one I received stopped charging when I put the temperature sensor in dry ice, but it still allowed discharge. I posted here about it...

Can I see that video? I would like to know the genesis of this thread, since I don't understand the discussion without the context. I cannot view the video. I posted another thread about something that might be similar...

BigBattery 170Ah PowerBlock low temp cutoff does something for charging, but not sure at what temp or what happens with discharging

I don't have am amp meter. Could it be that it was still charging a little, or not at all? What kind of hall effect sensor works on circuits like this? Does Ideal sell one or something?

BigBattery 170Ah PowerBlock low temp cutoff does something for charging, but not sure at what temp or what happens with discharging

New discharge test with capacitors unplugged: 13.2 volts in use room temp. 12.7 volts in use when temp sensor is placed in dry ice. Devices still running fine. Returns back to 13.2 volts when temp sensor removed from dry ice. Devices never shut down.

BigBattery 170Ah PowerBlock low temp cutoff does something for charging, but not sure at what temp or what happens with discharging

Update: I turned off the power supply, and only had a fan and a few USB devices running off the battery. This is a discharge test. It showed 13.2 volts. I put the temp sensor in the dry ice. It dropped to 12.7 volts. The devices (fan, USB devices) all continued running. I took the temp...

BigBattery 170Ah PowerBlock low temp cutoff does something for charging, but not sure at what temp or what happens with discharging

Test results video at end of post with description. Regarding Will Prowse's review of these nice batteries: Then Will commented on that video with this update: "Correction to this video: Unfortunately, I was correct about questioning the low temp charging protection on the powerblock...

Good states to move to (or buy land in) for DIY?

Yes, I'm bored. Yes, I want to experiment. Yes, I might want to start some supply businesses. Yes, I care about being safe. Yes, I'd like to be legally compliant even in over-regulated areas. But first, I want to get some inexpensive land somewhere where there are no or few regulations so...

    BMS for several 16s batteries

I'm starting to think a dedicated low temp relay would work, as well as use that relay to be the cutoff instead of the MOSFETs in a lot of these streetlight BMSs.

    DIY BMS design and reflection

Voltage isn't the only necessary electrical measurement necessary for battery health; one also needs measurement that can get things like coulombs (with a coulomb count to know how full) and amps, as well as environmental (tempature, and I don't know if anything else is important). Is that done...

    Not for DIY: Lithionics Battery

I called them and they are very nice. They have a fully UL listed fully sealed aluminum case battery pack that has 7,650Wh for $6,499 each that went through all the UL tests. These are their cells, and their cells are high quality, with some really great safety features (see their website if...

    Not for DIY: Lithionics Battery

That's $1,888 per kWh on that 960Wh battery without an inverter/charger and electric source gateway, which you saw a few years ago before the stock-market runup and continued anti-individual-storage pressures (so maybe they put in a price increase) I also saw another Lithionics reseller a few...

    Not for DIY: Lithionics Battery

I started reading https://marinehowto.com/lifepo4-batteries-on-boats/ when I found out about companies I've never heard of. BMS for several 16s batteries

Just chiming in to say I want to build a similar BMS setup as yours. I got 32 cells and want two 16S packs each with their own BMS. The reason I want this is so that every cell has its own balance leads and there is no possibility of a cell going rogue by itself with its companion cell helping...

    100Ah Fortune Cells

Sgt Raven & nebster, thank you. I have been moderately researching this issue, and what you both said seems to make sense and I had suspected both those things, but wasn't sure. Now I have to find a good charger. I'm trying to decide between Victron and Sigineer unless I'm overlooking something.

    100Ah Fortune Cells

Does anyone have the charge curve? I just want to know between 70% and 30%; no need to go 100% to 0%! I wish Will did data dumps of his cell tests. I also bought 32 of the Fortune 100Ah cells. I love them too because they're my first cell pouch LiFePO4 batteries and they seem to be nicely...

    DIY BMS design and reflection

This is my understanding after watching one very educational video which I already linked above and so therefore I'm just being redundant: Not for LiFePO4. If charging under the chemical charging minimum temperature for LiFePO4, every bit of charging voltage you do under that temperature will...

    DIY BMS design and reflection

Great comments. I would say three things: You don't know what state of charge the battery will be at ever in the future in a daily cycle battery based upon weather and home users. In a daily cycle home use battery based on solar, you know neither the bottom nor the top amount of charge. I...

    DIY BMS design and reflection

Scary. I prefer balancing at any state of charge. Reasons: I don't want to charge my batteries all the way, because they will have lower life sitting at higher state of charge. I don't have a choice. I.e., whatever I harvest from the farms or buy from the other farms is what I get. (Solar...

I want to power my 1 HP well pump that is U.S. 240v split phase from a small solar system.

Sounds good, but remember to compare it to other motors, because the clamp-on's have a response time that may be longer than the startup surge. Then each motor it compares to should have its own startup surge rating on the sticker. I forgot how to read those.

I want to power my 1 HP well pump that is U.S. 240v split phase from a small solar system.

Wait ... the idea is to have the highest voltage practical going long distances; the fact the well pump is 240VAC is more perfect. Whatever good pure sine wave inverter he can get that can handle the pump starting load (maybe with an added SoftStart on the pump) would be great. He wants a...

What's the difference between CANBUS, SMBUS, and I2C in BMS and Inverter systems?

What's the difference between CANBUS, SMBUS, and I2C in BMS and Inverter systems?

https://www.i2c-bus.org/smbus/ Looks like that's for computer motherboards. https://www.i2c-bus.org/pmbus/ I'm not seeing any solar inverter manufacturers adopting PMBus, so that seems like a dead end. More computer motherboards. Strange. I wonder why BMSs support it then.

Finally found a LiFePO4 BMS with Low-temp Charging Protection

Ok, so maybe getting off-topic here since I'm looking at other BMSs, but I noticed that there's another bus called SMBus and I2C. What is that? Also, what about I2C bus? Does that work with inverters? I started another thread for this question...

What's the difference between CANBUS, SMBUS, and I2C in BMS and Inverter systems?

What's the difference between CANBUS, SMBUS, and I2C, especially as related to BMS and Inverter systems? I noticed that there's another protocol on this page called SMBus. What is that? Also, what about I2C bus? Does that work with inverters? If the protocols are simple enough, I don't mind...
