Step up transformers from 110 to 220, is this not the way to do it?

These step up transformers make since when you really aren’t using or need the higher voltage very often. Years ago, it used to be hard or rather it was expensive to have linked inverters for generating 240vac single phase. Today there’s all sorts of inverters that can do this. If you need 240 then build your system accordingly. If you might need a small piece of equipment on 240 every now or then the step up transformer will be fine. Just realize that you have loses/inefficiency with the transformer. So switch it in when needed and disconnect when not using it.

Here’s an example of this type of transformer that have been used for generating 240vac from 120vac.
