Any type of stored energy has potential be dangerous even lethal.
We become accustomed to living with it as rituals and with working around it in normalized practices then it becomes less lethal or so it seems - not as dangerous in our mind. Didn’t bite us….yet. The Potential is always there in all stored energy….
Developed a runner today with Lifepo 48 set 4 Himassi 12v battery in series. VIP BMS bluetooth and heaters. The Cell Over Voltage tripped in 1 of my battery - saved by BMS. Probably not. Inverter and charge controllers need to be linked to bms. Because both MPP Solar 3048 inverter and then tested Victron 150/35 Smart Solar charge controller were trying throw the coal to it. The bms saved and opened the COV function.
I was testing the Victron charge controller and had solar cut from MPP 3048 inverter. The watts was bouncing up and down rapidly. Had seen this with MPP 3048 but not as dramatic. Both when tried separately were trying pour the coal to the batteries. ….. I had thought my MPP 3048 was defective….why hooked up Victron.
Blue tooth in batteries for bms is an excellent tool. I pinpointed the exact rogue cell in the exact battery causing the trouble. Unfortunately Himassi battery company is gone.
I knew they would be. I figure these were are b cells due to the price at the time. Wild part if put the system under a load vs no load the battery cell will normalize and disparity will return to normal. Next charge it zooms back up. If bms talked to inverter then would put the brakes on. Maybe.
The Blue tooth on the batteries are great but imagine communication like some server racks would be better. The VIP BMS did the job of protecting everything else. These batteries are about a year old.the batteries indicated 100% SOC by all the VIP BMS . Both mppt charge units were set up properly. The Victron was in absorption mode….state with 56.4 volts when that cell went into over voltage protection from bms. I think communication between battery and charger would have shut down the charge controller…. So… might look at rack batteries next.
Solar Addiction.
Think am going to try one of these next. RS485 rj45 to MPP 3048.
Some ppl might be tempted say you should have bought better ,,,,, there are reports of expensive battleborn doing the same. Run away cells exist in the wild.
Stored energy has potential get loose let smoke out..
First AGM battery ever charged about burned my Harley down while charging it - caught on fire. Used bolt cutters cut cables cut hold downs picked battery up with channel locks tossed out of garage. It eventually went out. Friend shorted 12v dc batter out on his car - didnt secure battery it blew up messed his hood up. Stored energy is dangerous. Btw you are not an electrical worker until been shocked a few times..
Surviving means you had life changing - learning experience.
Other means family buried.
Edit added forgot best part the Manufacturer CYA.
More edit: The late action they are in sync.
Old lead acid battery rebuilders could often rebuild them. I don’t think we see that with modern lifepo batteries. The old lead batteries - was recycled - melted down for the lead and turned into bullets too.
