  • Post in thread: Caution Before Purchasing Victron from XYZ Distributor!

I can understand the frustration of dealing with Victron so called distributors. This is all just opinion but it is observed after a few years of dealing with Victron & having a background that, I think, allows me to understand their structure & its shortcomings. Firstly, based on how wide &...

@KangaRooted Installation is scheduled for 26 June.
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Thanks to all that responded. I have done some further digging to the regulatory framework that seems to mimic a game of 3 dimensional chess being in played 4 dimensions. Thinking that AS/NZS 5139:2019 (Electrical installations — Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion...
  • Post in thread: Inverter Needed

The datasheet for the panels you are using would be useful here but let us make some assumptions. One 48v panel generating 600w = 12.5 amps. Ten panels in series is providing 480v at 12.5 amps (6000w) - when in series, voltages add. Combining 5 sets of 10 series panels in parallel is...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

The intent was to have all the AC wiring done by an electrician and get a COES for that part because the AC is the most dangerous. So from this: To this: The main panel was completely rebuilt & a new sub-panel was installed (see pictures below). So, until batteries arrive and are...
  • Post in thread: Australian Electrical Regulations for off grid?

Have been contemplating something similar until I researched the regulations - have a look at Grid Tie ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues? May be diiferent if you are not in Victoria.
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Don't know - there was an initial application for the PV & Fronius which could have included a battery, but didn't. As I am not intending to feed the grid from the battery nor from the Victron's, this design is effectively a battery & inverters plugged into a power point with a Grid Protection...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

When grid fails, batteries will supply loads because loads are on AC Out of Multis. Because it is on AC In side of Multis, Fronius will get its grid forming signal from the grid and will not generate any power during grid fail. I had originally planned, and may do later, to have the Fronius...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Apologies for this rather long post. Multiplus II 48/3000/35 Inverter is CEC listed as approved as Stand Alone Inverter With Generator Input Battery Only. This means my local electricity distributor will not allow it to be grid connected in an ESS configuration. The approval certificate is...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Hi Ramos, No I did not - have not had a reply from someone in Australia that has done what I am planning or similar. As far as the grid is concerned, the Multis will isolate in the event of grid failure so no apparent issue there. (AS/NZS 4777) So the Multis provide a safe barrier between the...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Grakat, Something like this? There is some doubt whether a Grid Protection Relay would be required - but I think it would be. Fronius Smart Meter tells Fronius Inverter to up/down regulate PV production to maximise 5kw grid feed in limit, . Fronius inverter reports PV production to Cerbo...
  • Post in thread: How to Add the Victron ESS Assistant

Assuming you have an Off-Grid System (which is what a non Grid Tied system is), further in the introduction it states: When not to use ESS • Off-grid systems - either with or without generator. • Marine systems. • Automotive systems. • Inverter priority, also known as 'Intentional islanding“ or...
  • Post in thread: 420mV Voltage Drop across JK BMS - SOLVED

Putting final configuration parameters in a new system and noticed a difference in voltage measurements between a Victron SmartShunt and a JK B2A24S15P. Battery measures 53.33v between cells 1-16. (Using two different multimeters.) BMS measures 53.33v. SmartShunt measures 52.89v and manual...
  • Post in thread: Multiplus II Bypass Switch

Happy New Year to all you good people. Planning/designing a Grid Tied ESS with Victron & DIY LiFePO4 to maximise self consumption. This is the current state: (Don't be too critical - the Heat Pump Hot Water was installed whilst I was in Europe & the installer simply replaced a 5kw Tank Hot...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

I agree although there has been no advice from Victron nor CEC as to what is preventing registration. Another trick for us all is this snapshot from the Rev 05 09/2022 version of the Multiplus-II 230v manual: This little disclaimer is just below the table of symbols used on the enclosure -...
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Thanks. AS/NZS 5033:2021 seems to be related to installation of PV arrays. AS/NZS 5139 for battery installations introduces a Decisive Voltage Classification as follows: suggesting a DIY 48v battery is DVC A. It further mentions: So I think a DIY battery should be OK without an earth alarm.
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

The Grid Protection Relay does not prevent feedback to grid - it only ensures that the Voltage & frequency in either direction meets the requirements of the configured grid code standard. If any of voltage or frequency falls outside of the parameters, the grid is disconnected until they come...
  • Post in thread: Multiplus II Bypass Switch

My understanding is that with ESS when the Grid fails, the Multi will try to provide the load on AC 1 Out from battery or PV on AC 1 Out. So I not sure I understand what you mean.
  • Post in thread: Multiplus II Bypass Switch

Could you provide a simple block diagram that shows how this would work? As you may have gathered from OP, I get a better sense of things with pictures.
  • Post in thread: 420mV Voltage Drop across JK BMS - SOLVED

This has been resolved. The BMS had Charge set to Off - once Charge was set to On, the voltage drop disappeared. Not sure about the internal workings of JK BMS, but I suspect the voltage drop was associated with either diodes or Mosfets being engaged when Charge is Off.

Did you ever find a solution for this?
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Thanks again - the renew.org document is a good read. I agree with you if I was planning to charge the DIY battery bank with MPPT's. Although Victron MPPT's are certified for use in Australia, they do not provide isolation between the PV side & the battery side. So, in the unlikely event of...

Edit: Mar 2023 to include Victron in thread title. The Plan: 8.65kw PV via Fronius Primo 6kw 2 Victron Multiplus II 48/3000/35 in Parallel with Victron ESS Primo on AC1 Out of Multis Grid on AC In of Multis. These are all approved in Australia. The Battery: DIY LiFePO4 of size to be determined...

  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

No real progress. Contacted a local sparky & provided all the circuit diagrams but they balked at me doing the DC side. Another fly in the ointment is that the Victron Multis are not approved by the CEC to feed in to the grid. So will have to replan based on the Fronius PV being on the AC In...

Ramos, What information do you feel you are missing?
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

Multiplus II has two internal relays that disconnect the grid circuit in the event of grid falling out specs for the Grid Code selected so probably not a problem.
  • Post in thread: Grid Tie Victron ESS with DIY LiFePO4 Battery in Australia - Regulatory Issues?

From what I can tell from regulations, that would work BUT: you will have to find a sparky that will do it - they tell me they are very busy in my neck of the woods. it may easier to get approval if you separate the charging device from the inverter as that way there can be no 240v connected to...
