  • Post in thread: Any reason I should "not" install the physically largest panels on the roof of our travel trailer?

I recently installed six 450W (82" x 41") on my 5th wheel. I used commercial roof racking (Tamarack) to mount them with 6 connection points per panel (3 rails). I could have gone with twelve 200W panels in the same area, but chose the larger ones because it reduced the roof penetrations and...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark Inverters 8 and 12K

Don't hold me to this & check with your county building dept & your installer.... If the county/AHJ is using the most recent codes, then from the street side there needs to be a 36" wide path from eave to ridge on a portion of the roof. If a street-side, adjacent roof face can be accessed...
  • Post in thread: SolArk Install Plan

One suggestions for the AC Disconnect - Engineeer775 puts in a Double Throw Disconnect instead of the simple disconnect. In the Down position it bypasses the Sol-ark and feeds the Critical Loads panel from the Main breaker panel. In the Center position it cuts off all power past the Main...
  • Post in thread: Removing panels from renogy Z brackets without removing the brackets?

Given the minimal amount of sealant you used on the brackets, I would just unscrew them from the roof, then seal and remount in the same holes. I can see potential water intrusion paths around the bolt heads in your pics.
  • Post in thread: DEYE Inverter UL Listed available in US

From reading that review it wasn't the Sol_ark specifically that didn't pass inspection, it seems it was the battery component/ess & overall "package" that caused the issue... "As far as UL9540, that has been a sticky issue and I have actually seen the code. It states only integrated systems...
  • Post in thread: Shuttle bus, 12 or 24 volt

One of the items that pushed me to a 24v sysyem was the expense of the Victron SCC/MPPT's when going with 12V . Using a 24 v system, the use of much less expensive charge controllers was possible. The savings easily paid for the added 24/12 70A Orion converter.
  • Post in thread: Family in high-rise building, no panel(s) allowed, 72 hour backup plan

So a set of portable panels that can be taken down once power is restored is still an HOA issue? I can see rules for permanently mounted panels, but portable ones in a natural disaster scenario shouldn't be an issue. If it is, then they are screwed. I would put out portable ones and beg for...
  • Post in thread: Efficiency questions for 24v RV system install- Feeding current 2 different ways

Is your converter & 12v DC loads/fuse panel an all-in-one? If so, remove the Converter AC and feed the DC fuse panel with the 12v from a 24v-12v step down. My converter in my rig was separate, so I just removed it and replaced it with a 24v/12V 70A Victron Orion. Works like a charm...

  • Post in thread: MidNite Solar MNBCLNA BB Barcelona Breaker Box

I'm not sure what amps your breakers will be or what MPPT/SCC's you are connecting to, but this MS 1000v box is cheaper - https://www.solar-electric.com/midnite-solar-mnpv4-1000-enclosure.html That combiner accepts six of this model of MS Breaker: https://www.solar-electric.com/mnepv.html
  • Post in thread: 24v setup with Onan5500

I put an multimeter on my Onan 5500 propane generator a few weeks ago & it pulled 114 amps while it started. I kept my 12v agm battery because of this. The Orion 24/12 70 a easily runs the rest of the 12v power (slides, jacks, etc.) in my 5th wheel.
  • Post in thread: DEYE Inverter UL Listed available in US

The distributor's 12k installer price was under $5550. The sol-ark 12k at that price has a lower cost per "spec'd" watt than the 8kW gray market deyes/sunsynks. Even the full retail price of the 12k has a cost per watt only slightly higher than the 8kw deyes. Of course it all depends on each...
  • Post in thread: Multiple battery

If you're using the Sol-Ark inverter there's no need to have a battery hooked up to it for the Solar install inspection. It will run fine without it. My plan is to get the primary solar install inspected and just hook-up batteries in a later "phase". The utility co. won't know anything more...
  • Post in thread: Panels not secured on one side.

RV with Tito only has 4 attached points on the "narrow panel side" corners & one in the mid point of the interior long side... Seems to be working for him. When i get my rig ready for solar I'll be doing similar rivet nut attachment on the "narrow panel side" with aluminum strut channel that...
  • Post in thread: Allowed to run Direct Burial wire in Flex Liquid Tight Conduit

The best practices I have seen would use an IMO DC Disconnect box - https://www.industrialcontroldirect.com/solar-energy-solutions-267/solar-dc-power-disconnect-268/ (or similar) mounted at the ground mount for each string. The USE-2 PV wire goes into the DC disconnect and then THNW-2 wire...
  • Post in thread: 24v setup with Onan5500

Basically, the Orion replaced the existing 60a, 120v to 12v Progressive converter. I made sure the wiring past he converter would support the 70a Orion. The Orion was dialed in to supply 13.4 V which is kind of the mid-point of the old converter output. I should probably have a charge...
  • Post in thread: What is the simplest way to mount three of these panels to my shingle roof?

On the ground would be the winner. If that was an option, there is no way I would consider roof mounting them.
  • Post in thread: Best wood finish/coating for marine ply battery box?

2 part epoxy. If you don't like the color, paint over the epoxy after a light scuffing with a scotch bright pad. If the wood is completely epoxy sealed on all sides, especially the ends/edges , then it will probably outlast you or the boat. That's how epoxy/plywood cored boats are made...
  • Post in thread: Online solar permitting service recommendations?

Thanks - CED Greentech SE (Ellenton, FL) has been unresponsive to my calls & emails, so they've been scratched from my list. Since I didn't want to waste their time, I was very specific in what I needed. They either weren't interested in a 13kW project or they must not handle the products I...
  • Post in thread: Anybody that knows these 280AH cells?

Search the forum for Lishen. There is a group buy in process for the 270/272 Ah versions here - https://diysolarforum.com/threads/lishen-270ah-272ah-cell-group-buy.14668/
  • Post in thread: Starting advice

I would suggest looking up engineer775 on youtube or his site practicalpreppers.com for what to consider when buying land for solar/offgrid/gridtied/other. Space for a ground mount array would be my 1st choice when considering a land purchase along with water avaialbility & a whole host of other...
  • Post in thread: Multiple battery

Be very careful having your DIY batteries as part of your Solar install permit. The codes are pretty clear that everything has to be UL listed.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark Inverters 8 and 12K

It looks like the gentleman in S. Africa is making great strides in his effort to communicate with the Sunsynk/Deye/Sol-Ark inverter. "Web interface sorted. I can now remotely alter my inverter settings."

  • Post in thread: Finding perfect panels for tilting solar rack for van

Why wouldn't you use their 270 W panels that have the same footprint as the 220 W? Let us know how they turn out. Google doesn't return any reviews of their product that I can find. I'm suspicious that other solar panels at with the same footprint max out at 220 W. Also, if you google maps...
  • Post in thread: 50 amp OTG Victron / Battleborn set up on a 45 foot Toy Hauler

Here's a diagram of a 24V Quattro system that I believe originated from Victron literature (https://html.scribdassets.com/2t5o6a3da88x1lgt/images/1-08c903cba1.jpg) Remove the Quattro & insert the Multiplus II 24V 2-x120 and you have a basic Victron system including panels, generator, batteries...
  • Post in thread: Extreme Wind Load Concerns on Rooftop Solar; Solutions?

I would seriously consider putting in a ground mount if I had open areas. Have you considered approaching the field owner to buy additional land to accomodate a ground mount?
  • Post in thread: Enclosure for 24v DIY battery.

I've used SFK kits for two 12v 302 AH batteries using their V3 kit & my own JK BMS's. I was impressed by the amount of thought and engineering they put into their components. Just note that the majority of their internals are 3d printed components. Not necessarily a bad thing but the finish...
