  • Post in thread: What is the point in charging Lifepo4 all the way to 14.4v when we have about 99.8 SOC at 13.88 v ?

My cells are not all 3.6 volts at the upper part of the knee on charging curve. In fact I have a 4S and cell 1 is 200mv above my lowest cell. Pushing the pack voltage charge to 14.4 can bring my highest cell above 3.6 for no good reason. Better to let your charge voltage for lifepo4 lower if...
  • Post in thread: Xuba 280ah Batteries, how to proceed?

Jason makes great points and I think his advice is good. However, I think it would be best (less risky) if you top balanced the batteries in parallel to maximum voltage using a power supply where you can limit the amperage and voltage because you just spent a bunch of money and you don't want to...
  • Post in thread: RJ Energy 271 AH LIFEPO4 Lithium Batteries – detailed Top Balancing using the Parallel Step Method procedure

My second Video documenting my project step by step configuring Cheap high quality Lifepo4 cells. I did my best to follow the advice of a trusted expert with several years of experience and who is a marine electrician. Charger settings are detailed. RJ Energy Lifepo4 cells are balanced. The...
  • Post in thread: RJ-Lithium 271AH Cells - Video Just Unpacked 4S

I running a 60W refrigerator on a boat and I'm not a full time live aboard. I'm charging to 13.8v and going to 30% DOD. No big inverter loads. If I was going around the world with my batteries, I'd choose CALB I guess.
  • Post in thread: Review of Screw lengths on RJ Energy 271AH Aluminum Cased Lithium LIFEPO4 Battery for Sailboat

Thanks @FilterGuy for all your great help. I think you need to start your own web site but I'm glad you are hanging out here. You have bailed me out a few times now. I ordered some hardware. From BelMetric Automotive and Hardware Specialty Supplies. I have 4S but I ordered a few extras...
  • Post in thread: DIY Marine Electrical Suppliers who provide good value. Websites you Trust for Marine Wiring

I just finished debugging a my neighbors boat electrics with many bad connections. I made a video of who I trust to teach DIY wiring. Also who do I trust as a supplier. It would be interesting to see who you trust in your marine electrical projects and provide good value Here is my video on...

  • Post in thread: Enable the ability to have the BMS turn off the inverter. Adding a remote BMS ON OFF switch to Xantrex Inverter

Will just did a video showing who to add a remote BMS switch to an older inverter charger. This was perfect timing for my project. Shutting off the inverter at the switch makes life a bit easier because we don't need to use high amp expensive contactors / relays. In this video I go into a bit...
  • Post in thread: 1500w inverter - which bms?

I have a 80A FET based bms. I don't think FET BMS systems are ready for your inverter load no matter what the rating. I suggest you connect the inverter to your battery directly but configure a on / switch on your inverter. I did this in the following video.
  • Post in thread: What is the point in charging Lifepo4 all the way to 14.4v when we have about 99.8 SOC at 13.88 v ?

The problem is if your cell voltages vary when at a full state of charge, your BMS will shut off your pack if you go above say.. 3.65 vpc and the Captain will be caught with his shields down. Turning down your charger charge voltage to say 13.8 will avoid this potential problem but most people...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 at dock

I have a on off switch to turn LiFePO4 off at the dock and I run my FLA battery at the dock and keep my LiFePO4 at at 50%-40% SOC with FLA charge on. When I get ready for a trip I charge the LiFeP04. See video time 8:05.

Here is my balancing video. I think most would a agree that you should top balance in most situation. Will also has a video.

  • Post in thread: RJ-Lithium 271AH Cells - Video Just Unpacked 4S

I don't think RJ is the same as your source. Reputation is everything and warranty means nothing in my opinion. I think it is best to pay a bit more for batteries where you know actual cases where the batteries worked out. With RJ Energy, I have had the case history evidence by reading the...

  • Post in thread: RJ Energy 271 AH LIFEPO4 Lithium Batteries – detailed Top Balancing using the Parallel Step Method procedure

I agree. The BMS sections is old and incomplete. You can't get much and you need to learn it elsewhere. The focus is also Boats not EV or off grid. Rod does not trust high amp applications running through MOS FET BMS. Will seems not to trust the MOS FET BMS above 50% their rating. I don't...

I bought my used batteries for $400 and I've watched my individual cells go 20mv of balance above 13.85 pack voltage where they are nearly full. Your statement perhaps out of context... "it is not worth the extra effort and risk to max them out".. Is my impression is what should be told to...

It could Act like a short circuit. Do searches. I think you have the information necessary to make your...

  • Post in thread: Charging a Lifepo setup with a switched PS vs a non switched and a diode

My impression is that you don't need diodes if you will be using a charge controller as a general statement unless you have shading on one panel. As mentioned you give up power if you used diodes and they are built into some panels. I just did a project where I am using a blocking diode and I...
  • Post in thread: Received my BLS 190Ah LiFePO4 Cells this Week,.....now What?

I think you are correct as usual. I have a recreational use boat and like to be at 13.8 at sunset with Loads on. Loads on charging drops me quickly to 13.6 after sunset. 13.6 would be possible if I had a larger bank / depending on weather etc. I store my batteries at around 13v and charge them...

  • Post in thread: Inverter Remote Switch

I need more info on the system you are hooking your inverter to. However, many inverters need have their power on connected to the charge / controller bms units so they can turn off the inverter if low voltage happens. Here is a video where I modified my inverter so it could be connected to a...

  • Post in thread: Simple? Blue Sea ML-RBS ElectroDacus BMS Driver Circuit Experiment

I just made a discovery. The Blue Sea ML-RBS 7700 only takes 7mA of current on the signal wires. It is the red wire that takes all the current. This means that most optocouplers can drive these circuits if they have 10ma available. Here is my video of the testing I did.
