  • Post in thread: Info only: 2021 Tacoma amp draw and alternator loads tested

This thread is just for reference for those looking to use excess alternator capacity to charge a battery. Other cars should have similar loads to this Tacoma for lights, airco, radio, etc. 21 Tacoma OffRoad, 130A alternator, 9k miles, running perfect, zero issues battery or alternator. I...
  • Post in thread: I am making a huge surplus in solar and not even into spring properly yet. What can I use it up on living in van full time?

Get a small 300W heater, run it aimed at your remaining damp areas to continue drying out your van.
  • Post in thread: Victron Phoenix Inverter 12V 1200VA 120v with induction cook top

@KITROBASKIN Lol, that's the worst. He got the tiniest wee simmer bubble, not a boil, rest was vibration, and he was all "oh yah starting to boil!". Not even clise to a boil. And running on reduced setting. Have you actually used one? Low setting, It's like putting your 12" frypan on a...
  • Post in thread: 12V-Only System, No Inverter

I hate to say it, but I wouldn't wish a 12v kettle or coffee maker on my worst enemy! I did all the research, and the heat times and wattages for those devices are so slow and low. From 120v ac, an electric kettle or coffee maker are virtually 100% efficient, every watt consumed goes to heat...
  • Post in thread: Batteries randomly dumping Amps

I saw where when aliens hover overhead, all electrical gets drained. Then the bright light... Anything feel tender, like you've been probed in last few days??
  • Post in thread: Bought a van! Now what? 12 or 48 volt?

Complicated, huge power use system. OP stated use drives > 3000w usage at once, potentially often. Most of the power use items listed are AC. Op expressed a desire to use them but not run out of power. Power source will be 800w solar on roof, a 2nd alternator, and shore power. rixan diesel...
  • Post in thread: System design

The guy who built this forum, Will Prowse, has a whole series of.videos to teach you these exact basics, so you're not buying or deciding on equipment without even knowing how to size a cable or fuse... I recommend you take 30 min and read this starter 12v design with fuses all shown, its basics...
  • Post in thread: Victron Phoenix 12V/1200VA wattage

This is great! Now I understand. All it took was 2 beers!
  • Post in thread: I am making a huge surplus in solar and not even into spring properly yet. What can I use it up on living in van full time?

@Gueyog8a7 I better not see another 20 page thread from you complaining about your van being damp, if you have excess power now and aren't using it to dry your van, after complaining you didn't have enough power to dry van before! ;) But my answer to new goodies, is 12-24v fridge.
  • Post in thread: Gobi Sienna Heating with Bluetti and External Batts

This is true, however here are the specs for his bluettis Ac70 charge 32 to 104f, discharge to -4f Ac200p operate 32-104f, storage 14-113f. So can't even discharge below freezing. So yeah, would need to be inside house to charge, and kept warm to discharge to run heater. This for sure will...
  • Post in thread: Tell me how please

@Arbee I just wanted to say, your question was one of the best written ones I've read, kudos to you for writing a smart question that lets folks actually help! Say 5w for the camera. 24 hrs is 120Whrs, or 10Amp hrs. AGM can use down to 80% discharge say, so a smaller 50Ah AGM could give you 4...
  • Post in thread: Victron Orion Voltage Drop

Looks like you already found problem. I disagree with using the chassis or frame for "ground"... what it sounds like you mean is "NEGATIVE/NEUTRAL RETURN", and not actually the electrical concept of ground. Incorrectly using these terms, as if they are all the same in an electrical circuit...
  • Post in thread: Batteries died and will not accept charge. Help!

Didnt say what kind of batteries. On road trip... what is the temperature? In Phoenix it was 37f this morning at 7. Were your batteries below freezing or bms cutoff temp, if lifepo4?
  • Post in thread: What wire size do i need from my inverter to my battery bank?

    Yes.
  • Post in thread: Tell me how please

You don't need a "house" battery. You have one single small load. It's completely analygous to a standard normal car running a security system. All you need is a good starter battery, or 2 if you want more storage. You have zero "house needs". I have a house battery, but I have a doesel...
  • Post in thread: Small AGM backup for diesel heater start, vs heated Lifepo4.

A recent thread got close to this, but I didn't want to derail it. Folks with interesting comments on this were @RV8R @HarryN @Tomthumb62 I have a small truck topper "popup canopy camper" made by Tune, similar to an Alu-Cab or GoFast Camper but whole top pops up, so not much insulation...
  • Post in thread: What percent charge do you get from dc-dc from alternator?

    Doh!
  • Post in thread: New electric system on sailboat

I would return that monstrosity inverter, and get a 2000W one, absolutely. Air conditioner is a complete non starter, it is an order of magnitude different from all else. There are 100 threads here on powering an airco, you will need a huge battery and panels. You need numbers on that model...
  • Post in thread: Batteries sorted by price per kWh, not sure if it would be appropriate to share.

At the least, you could sort it for 12v and 24v batteries with shipping, and just take a screenshot of cheapest ones to post, that way we get the info, just not the instant click utility. Then we could just find it ourselves in Amazon or company, or click on Wills link if he has one... Would...
  • Post in thread: Bluesea 285 Circuit breaker 48V max

This is the problem with a 48v system where the overcurrent protections and switches aren't already built into each device. None of the standard switches, battery cutoffs, CB, fuses, actually work or are rated to system voltage. All 48v max, and that is not nominal but actual. So finding all...
  • Post in thread: Rookie looking to convert to lithium 12 volt

Rover is compatable with lithium. You can just swap out the batteries, basically done. 4 x 130Ah lead acid, 520Ah of which you can only use half as lead acid has a 50% depth of discharge. They are the same as 250Ah of LiFePO4 lithium batteries for total Watt-hrs of energy. 1. Buy a 12V 250Ah...
  • Post in thread: 12v or 24v

Bad microwave advise, sorry. Unless you purchase an "inverter microwave", which are vastly better for mobile, then almost all microwaves achieve "half power" by cycling magnetron on full power, at a 50% time cycle. Only inverter microwaves actually change the amount of power the magnetron uses...
  • Post in thread: Batteries sorted by price per kWh, not sure if it would be appropriate to share.

Incorrect. Reread his post a few above, he details exactly why the affiliate links are there, why they cant be changed, and that they all lead to his account and why.
  • Post in thread: No Inverter Setup

Here is a picture of the system you referenced. Just don't install the wires and inverter with the red x on them. Hook your dc loads to the dc fuseblock with correct wires size, 125% of whatever the load is, and make sure the fuse in your fuseblock matches that or just more.
  • Post in thread: Small AGM backup for diesel heater start, vs heated Lifepo4.

@Vigo @HarryN Good points on voltage drop, always good to mention in a heater thread, 90% of errors I see posted are due to this! It takes 110-144 W, 10 to 12A, to heat up the glowplug at start. I have never seen it take more than 4 minutes, so I use 15 Watt-hrs as a conservative start...
  • Post in thread: Bought a van! Now what? 12 or 48 volt?

Hey, just so you understand, 48v system doesn't give you ANY more power than a 12v system! The only difference, and alllll the stuff we talked about, is it changes the wiring size, that is IT. 48v lets you run smaller wires, which makes it easier to do a 3000w inverter. But you can do it...
  • Post in thread: What size wire and breaker?

From spec sheet, it puts out 30A of 12vdc, 360W. 40A for 10 sec. Size the wire to carry the load plus 25%: So use 30A, x 125% and round up is 40A. So, 8awg does 40A up to 10ft total run with < 3% voltage drop. 8AWG minimum. Circuit breaker or fuse, you size to protect the wire. (Or can do...

I see now, thx! Farking Renogy! ;)
  • Post in thread: Bluetti - Solar + alternator input into one port?

I read your post twice. I still can't really tell what your issue is. Can you more concisely state the proplem? I think it is that your Bluetti only has one charging input and you're trying to use solar AND a feed from car alternator in one input. But I'm not gonna go look at the specs for...
  • Post in thread: I'm looking to power a mobile workshop.

They all have a power draw of their own, quite significant for some. The larger the inverter, the larger the parasitic draw, in general. On some inverters it is 100W or more, and will drain your whole 100Ah 12v battery if left on overnight. This is why all power stations have an on off switch...
