Bummer! It looks like: (i) the strap(s) have crushed the end cell(s), (ii) caused by lack of end plates to spread the load. The cardboard was not sufficient. Also, I suspect that the hooks and the ratchet mechanisms will eventually pierce the thin blue plastic wrap and/or the thin aluminum...

    Just like hard dope.
  • Post in thread: What are the actual FINES for unpermitted solar installations?

In Indiana, the County tax assessor would likely notice any stuff outside when they do the annual walk around. Then the assessor would notify code enforcement. IMHO, the real motive behind building permits is to let the assessor know of the existence of the taxable asset so that the assets can...
  • Post in thread: very high heatsink temperature on Victron 100/30 MPPT

Here is a guy who does a good job of documenting how much heat reduction and the corresponding increase in amp output he achieved for the Victron Dc-DC charger by running a fan powered by the input side of by the unit. The fan only runs when his vehicle is running. Ducting made a noticeable...

Me thinks you should not use this one:
  • Post in thread: Victron is Over-priced Eurotrash. Why would anybody buy Victron over an AiO?

Oh no! ... I am now thinking about learning how to 3D print stuff. A new rabbit hole to dive into like I have done with solar stuff.
  • Post in thread: Opinions solicitation. Future battery price trend?

My working assumption is that the Great Reset will, in fact, be implemented with the effect that EVERYTHING, if available at all, will be rationed and thus in extreme short supply, and that the world powers that be will create a new digital currency where ALL existing currencies after the...
  • Post in thread: B- cable getting hot on charge

If it were me, I would measure the voltage drop across each connection. Excessive voltage drop = excessive heat build up.

  • Post in thread: How to release and unplug a white JST PH connector from a Victron MPPT

Update: I successfully pulled the JST connector out of the socket. It took quite a bit of force, I did not pull on the wires themselves. I only gripped the plastic connector.
  • Post in thread: What's the best solar-related item you bought in 2023?

My Raspberry Pi 4 B running as a Cerbo GX. Except I have spent waaaay too many hours fumbling around figuring it out and how to add more stuff to it. I hate Terminal commands! :)
  • Post in thread: DC-DC Charging Options in Vehicle Mounted Systems

To me, a 105 amp alternator sounds fairly small. The rule of thumb is not to draw more than 70% of the alternator’s rated power (in your case 74Ah) to avoid overheating the alternator and burning out the diodes. I suggest that you use a clamp on DC meter, start the vehicle, and record the Ah...
  • Post in thread: I'm tired of unreliable 'all in one' systems to power my fridge!

My Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 charge controller does not monitor the battery state of charge. However, it will show how many Ah the charger itself is providing to the battery.
  • Post in thread: PV Testing Equipment?

How about short circuiting a panel by connecting the pos and neg wires to each other. Then use a clamp ammeter to clamp around one wire to read the amps flowing.

  • Post in thread: Question about specs for DIY build

Not to my knowledge. As for me personally, if I had to buy an off the shelf battery, the SOK is the only off the shelf battery I would buy. I would buy from https://www.currentconnected.com

XPS insulation like Owens Corning and Johns Mansfield have a maximum service temperature of 165 degrees F, whereas the Polyiso has a maximum service temperature of 600 degrees F. When I insulated my aluminum cargo trailer, I wanted to use the XPS but chose the Polyiso because, in direct sun...
  • Post in thread: Deciding to DIY my solar battery was one of my worst mistakes ever

My understanding is that few prebuilt batteries have any "compression". Rather, they just tape the cells together or use foam between the cell and outer case to hold the cells "securely" in place. Consequently, if you are happy with that level of prebuilt "compression", no need to worry about...
