  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

Yup. I'll pull the wires and do it right. I just hate to go back, as a matter of principle. In this case, the time to kludge it is only a bit less time than doing in correctly. I'll need to pull the 4 wires and ground from the grid tie, pull the two spare pv10 to the grid tie. Pull the 4...
  • Post in thread: On grid and Off grid using SolarEdge and Growatt

That makes sense. Many people have discussed using an SExxxH-US off-grid, but almost all say that it cannot be done. However, you are first (to my knowledge) that mentioned setting the SExxxxH-US to zero export! So, if that would work, my GroWatt and autotransformer just need to be a...
  • Post in thread: 6500EX-48 - Sell it or keep it?

Thank-you everyone. I might regret it, but I've decided to keep it. With all of the troubleshooting that many others have done, I'll be able to benefit from their experience (good and bad). If it doesn't work out, I'll trust SS to do the right thing (or sell it). I have three Growatt 48v 5kw...
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

hwy17 (comment #4) hit the nail on the head, I think. Great discussion follows from #4. In a nutshell, a short from + and - inside the EMT could start a fire, but the fire would be contained inside the EMT. If PVC was using inside the house for the PV, the house could burn down. Key point is...
  • Post in thread: LV6048 or GroWatt SPF 6000T DVM-MPV

I had a last minute change of plans, and went with two GroWatt SPF 3000TL LVM-ES. If I had to choose between the LV6048 and the GroWatt 6000T, I would have gone with the GroWatt because I need the 250v input for my long runs. Sure do like the LV6048 though, if I was roof mount.
  • Post in thread: Did anyone else run out and buy a 48V EG4 battery after watching Wills Video?

You will be pleasantly surprised. Good company.
  • Post in thread: Big battery shipping department issues

I wouldn't fault BB for the freight company issues. Getting truck drivers is a challenge right now. Shipping anything is a mess. Is there really any good freight shipping company right now? They all seem to want huge windows and want you to wait around, just like the cable TV companies...
  • Post in thread: SolarEdge SE 10000H up in smoke

My SolarEdge SE-10000H has been up for about a week, and producing up to 63kWh a day up here in Maine in March. I have 9600 watts of panels. Yesterday was a bit cloudy, and it was peaking at about 8kW around noon. I noticed on the SE app that it had stopped producing, so went downstairs and...
  • Post in thread: SolarEdge SE 10000H up in smoke

UPDATE: CED Greentech is sending a replacement up via FedEx. They have always been great.
  • Post in thread: SolarEdge SE 10000H up in smoke

63 has been the peak so far. The panels are exactly due-south, but at about 35 degrees rather than 42. They should do even better this summer.
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

The arc fault detection would shut down the inverter, but it wouldn't prevent the flow of current from the string that was causing the arc. EMT is the way to go!
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

Me neither, now that I've learned more about the reason. I just wish that I had done it right the first time. Living and learning with 480 vDC is going to kill me one of these days. Maybe that is why my wife lets me play with this stuff so much?!
  • Post in thread: SolarEdge commissioning without net metering meter?

Hi all! New to the forum. We spent a good part of the covid summer installing a 9.6kW array with 24 panels. 2 strings of 12. I finally have 12 volts at each string coming into the SolarEdge inverter from the SolarEdge optimizers. Looks ready for commissioning. However, the power company...
  • Post in thread: Auto transformer dangers

On a DIY forum, I've yet to see anyone that is truly qualified! We all have opinions and are learning, and change opinions as we learn. The many concerns with external auto transformers are valid, with various ideas for solutions for some of the concerns. Ian's testing explained a lot.
  • Post in thread: Did anyone else run out and buy a 48V EG4 battery after watching Wills Video?

Ordered on October 19th. Patiently waiting for my EG4 to arrive. Expecting it shortly, but it's the holiday season and there are many other shipping issues.
  • Post in thread: Sunmodo. A year later.

A while ago, I promised some photos for someone here, but I couldn't find the post! Here are some photos of my DIY solar setup using Sunmodo racking. The cast alloy polished brackets/connectors are beautiful, but maybe a bit overkill. Also, when you use the torque wrench on the set screws...
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

If one strand of the DC PV shorted to the EMT, there would be not any current to direct to ground, because the panel voltage is not referenced to ground. The DC voltage of a panel is referenced to the panel + and - only. Even if both shorted to the EMT, the panels would continue to provide...
  • Post in thread: Ground mount - 410' run. Do I need a junction box ?

Late the the post, but this might help someone from the lessons we learned pulling six #10 PV10 wires underground 250' through 2 1/2 inch PVC. The PVC pipe was installed and covered with dirt about a year before we installed the ground mount solar. 1. Use cable lube. One person's job will be...
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

I think that you nailed it. If the PV wires short together for some reason, the solar panel will continue to provide power and potentially start a fire inside the EMT. To a point, the fire would be contained. Even a fuse at the start of the string (out on the ground mount, etc) would have...
  • Post in thread: 6500EX-48 - Sell it or keep it?

I think that you are right. Maybe $900?
  • Post in thread: Batteries - Encharge 3, BigBattery or Electric Car Parts?

Thank-you again for recommending Signature Solar. Very impressed with the company. My EG4 from Signature Solar arrived today. Looking forward to setting it up with my SPF5000ES and 5kW midpoint transformer (both also from Signature Solar). Question: Is there any reason that I can't install...
  • Post in thread: On grid and Off grid using SolarEdge and Growatt

We use too much power to be off grid 100%. Unfortunate situation for many people. We should simplify our life so that we don't need so much power. When I was growing up, we heated with wood. No AC for the few hot summer days and nights. Clothes were hung outside to dry. Our only...
  • Post in thread: EMT for DC PV inside the house. Why?

You're right. I'll need to cut the wires. Do it right. Splice the wires. Not that big a deal overall I guess. Just need to stop looking for a quick fix.
  • Post in thread: Pre-charge resistor seems crazy

I always wanted to understand how the pre-charge resistor that is integrated into the EG4 series of batteries works. When Will Prowse pointed out the resistor, it sure looks larger than a "typical" pre-charge resistor. Since the resistor would need to be connected to the positive terminal, but...
  • Post in thread: Ground wire needed between solar panels and SolarEdge inverter??

250 feet from the house, I have 24 panels, ground mounted rack on metal ground screws from Sunmodo. The ground screws go 4 feet into solid ground. No sand or rocks. Just a mix of soil and clay. NEC code says (my interpretation, as well as Sunmodo docs and SE docs, as I interpret them) that I...
  • Post in thread: EG4 6500 or 6000 inverter in cold garage. Less than -10C (14F)

The EG4 inverter spec sheets say that the operating temp low side is -10C (14F). We sometimes get to 0F here. Sometimes even -15F. If I mount the inverter in the garage, it will get that cold. I assume that I should mount it in the basement of the house instead. Obvious I guess, but I...
  • Post in thread: Ground wire needed between solar panels and SolarEdge inverter??

Good question. I want to follow up on this this week, but am at a funeral this weekend. I'll get back after I think some more about this!
  • Post in thread: New EG4 8K spilt phase inverter

    Nice!! UL1741SA as well!
  • Post in thread: Auto transformer dangers

David Poz installed a three pole breaker to address over current issues in the N of the auto-transformer. Rather than just break N and L1 between the inverters and the autotransformer and panel, the three pole breaker could have been wired to break N, L1 and L2. What was the reason for keeping...
