  • Post in thread: Oops - I shorted out a 48V/400Ah Lifepo4 battery

My in-law wedding band hit body of a car he was turning a box end wrench on the positive side of a car battery. It melted a nice scar into his finger I heard this happens lot. I can see how it could happen most car batteries are near the fender that gold ring conducts very easily.
  • Post in thread: Shunt snapped and caused a fire🔥

I'm now looking at putting the batteries inside an used gun safe strip out the inside and weld in steel shelves each bank. Put a stove pipe on the top go out though the roof of my shed and a fan at the bottom to feed air in it's way overkill but I can go on a business trip and not worry about...

Got an email from them today Code is SPRING7 Browser link
  • Post in thread: Oops - I shorted out a 48V/400Ah Lifepo4 battery

Put some heat Shink over the tools only the ends are exposed. You contacted right in the middle would have protected that.
  • Post in thread: Lowest electric bill ever....

I can see how easy it is to get carried away spending $1000's on solar just because it's fun to make so much power from the sun. My wife see's heavy box shows up with batteries she is asking, "How much did that cost". I'm replying we will save so on our electric bill :)
  • Post in thread: Electric company not going to be happy :)

I have been cutting way back on power usage I figured out that if I add up just the KWH used it was around $81. My bill is around $220 all that was fees, and extra tax added on. One fee they can't even explain what $50 something was called adjusters. Not only solar users hurting them also energy...
  • Post in thread: Lowest electric bill ever....

Sounds like you are living on acreage not a tract home. Sure, if I had even 2 acres, I could easily build a big enough array mount it on a sun tracker. 20kw would need 40 500 watt 4x8 sized panels that not going to fit on a tract home. Even the cost of trying to do it at my house might be...
  • Post in thread: 12v LFPo to Alternator question

Working with 12V is the problem the wire size goes up quickly and is expensive I agree with the OP that 20-40 amps is reasonable expectation from alternator charging. Good quality UL listed 1/0 wire cost me $5 a foot.
  • Post in thread: EG4 18KPV and Generac 18kw standby generator with 200A automatic transfer

I would do lot more research before you make any decisions. Never know when you need a generator how much can you really get for it on the used market most of the cost is having it installed. Grid tie system will require permitting and inspection lot of cost involved if you plan on using a...
  • Post in thread: 12v LFPo to Alternator question

You can't use a Lifepo4 to start the engine not designed to dump that much current and charge quickly. Lead acid is fine for a start battery I would not bother with those marine dual purpose pay more for them they work just like a starter battery. I would just leave the starter battery alone...
  • Post in thread: It says lithium iron phosphate but they are in LiPo style pouches

Lipo fires do happen not like your handling nitroglycerin if they charge to 3.65 instead of the usual 4.2V for a lipo probably never have any issues. RC aircraft usually discharge at 50-100C which would be considered abusive worst I have seen is swelling. I continue to use those swelled packs as...
  • Post in thread: Tesla Solar doesn't honor their warranty.

Leasing solar is a bad idea stuck with that company forever just one downside. Sounds like your DIY fix resolved it IMO I would just treat it as your own system and support it yourself who would know any different. My utility has been increasing solar connect fees, and reducing the rate they...
  • Post in thread: Received my batteries from Docan LF280K tiny amount of bulging.

I have seen several batteries catch fire usually from an RC airplane crashing and burning, or someone charging a battery that had been in a crash. I have flown several that had lot of bloating in foam planes. There were some that claimed you could charge them to 4.35V per cell called High...
  • Post in thread: Shunt snapped and caused a fire🔥

Makes me rethink using wood for a battery box. I have a mig welder and some steel. Need to treat these like Lipos charge them in a wood stove.
  • Post in thread: EG4 LifePower4 no UL Label - Failed Inspection

Yep, I know it's little tricks they use to hinder someone and make it more expensive. They replied to my email saying their list is based on the CEC list see below. They don't have to put it in the agreement simply refuse to approve the design. I haven't gone any further with them but according...
  • Post in thread: Where to find quality ring terminals

That first link is Molex manufactured in Florida I bought those not from Amazon I found them at Arrow electronics for $36 free shipping. About half the price as Amazon.
  • Post in thread: Docan 280 cells Canadian stock

I have also researched here about Docan and I found mixed results. I just received 16 EV LF280K 6000 cycles from Docan China took 40 days. Paid $85 each. Each box comes with two I only opened one box so far. I will need to do a capacity test after top balancing see if they are good. Jenny...
  • Post in thread: Sell/buy without being ripped off?

Watch out with cashier checks those can be counterfeit it may take up to 10 days for your bank to discover the cashier check was fake. This was a common scam when selling on craigslist. Buyer would call, or text tell you they are sending you a cashier's check to cover the cost of someone to pick...
  • Post in thread: Residential Solar System Options/Reccomendations

Have you read this thread ? There are other threads like it I know it was resolved but only because of this forum. I bought my inverter from Signature the savings outweighed the risk of a problem. Posting here seems to get a quick resolution. If I were spending lot of money like on a full...
  • Post in thread: High cost vs low cost fuses

Depends on the risk you want to take if your battery bank is inside a shed outside take little more risk on a cheaper fuse. If it's inside your home, or in an expensive RV last thing you want is to a fire because you wanted to save $40. I try to go with everything that is UL listed then I know...
  • Post in thread: Looking for local help installing EG4 hybrid with batteries to my 26kw grid tied solar system. Anybody here in the Phoenix area?

SRP like APS requires all the equipment to be on the CEC list (California approved). The good thing is EG4 18 and Powerpro battery just got approved on the CEC list. You have to get a new design plan go to greenlancer get plans drawn up. I would probalby ditch the current GT inverters and get...
  • Post in thread: Shunt snapped and caused a fire🔥

OP said 5 rows of shelves each shelf had 2 battery banks that is 10 battery banks lets assume 304ah batteries wired in series to get 51.2 V each shelf grand total of 3040 amps. Around 145-150k watts of power. That's a lot of power in a garage .
  • Post in thread: Cheap Insurance: Surge Protection

Cheap insurance I like how they have the LED tells you when the MOV's are worn out. They can only take so many surges before they become useless. Used to replace power strips when I was a PC tech years ago every 3 years after one MOV wore out and caused smoke in the office. Usually with ever PC...
  • Post in thread: Climate change, COVID, and other things...

You realize that if it wasn't for climate change solar panels would cost $20 a watt probably not even exist like it does today. Industry not going to invest millions of R&D into an something that has no future. Government jump started the industry by subsidizing it and EV cars because of climate...
  • Post in thread: Signature Solar Quality and Warranty Woes

How would this have ended if the customer had no idea about this forum? I would never open it up especially if there is a warranty is void sticker on the case. Just tell support I'm not opening it up I can do whatever troubleshooting is required without opening it up. Their support people...
  • Post in thread: got fined 1k for an off-grid, 500 dollar, 9 panel system i lay on the roof

Likely they had a part 107 pilot do it. He was telling me how they sold a 9kw power plan system to some elderly people to knock off $50 from their bill a month. He told me give me $250 to get a neighbor to buy solar from him. I told him I always tell people to get 3 bids never from a door to...
  • Post in thread: Wow, basen rack.mounts batteries destroy a home in germany

I know this isn't exactly related but here is the report from a 2019 battery storage explosion here in Arizona. It's a very detailed report although they are using Lithium-Ion batteries instead. It's still interesting to read about a battery storage systems built by smart people and backed by...
  • Post in thread: NAZ Solar Electric 6% off inverters, batteries, and panels sale ends today use code SAVE6

If your spending lot of money ready to buy it's a good deal unfortunately it ends today. I believe they sell Sol-Ark and other high-end inverters. If you're ready to buy 25k worth of stuff that's $1500.
  • Post in thread: Off-Grid using Generator transfer switch.

I don't have a PSU that goes to 48V nor do I have enough batteries. I can deal with this later when I do get the batteries. Right now, I'm working on mounting the panels, trenching conduit and pulling wire from my shed to the main breaker panel. I have an extra 1 1/2 conduit I put in when I...
  • Post in thread: DIY in Austin - Impossible?

That's exactly what I'm doing because 15kw worth of DIY battery cost me $1600 where a 15k UL certified battery would cost over $25000. Using an off grid reliance controls Generator transfer switch. I picked the one that didn't have a twist lock plug. This kind of brings up something seemed...
