  • Post in thread: An encouragement to those who have built their system

Today the power went off on our street. we didn't notice for hours until we saw the clock was off on the 220 electric range. It felt pretty good to realize we didn't notice. Whether you went through all the build your own hassle to save money, be independent, or just to have backup, when you...
  • Post in thread: Interesting tree mount for morning light

Hi all. tall tree to the east of home blocks light until about 10 AM, this is our booster idea that followed some property maintainance. Surplus everything except the pvc box. The buried wire is #2 (in conduit) for about a 50 foot run to an unused PWM controller, which should be fine for this...
  • Post in thread: Has anyone else realized how far we are away from running civilization fully on wind and solar?

Admin pls check this I want to adhere to rules. BUT. Has anyone else realized how far we are away from running society on wind and solar? We are here in this group talking about how to squeeze out a few watts to add a refrigerator to a 5kw - 20kw home system, and we, as a nation (US), are being...
  • Post in thread: Has anyone else realized how far we are away from running civilization fully on wind and solar?

These are great replies. I was reading about how an uncomfortably large group think electric cars run on "magic".

I also trim my trees from the ground, one cut at the base and the problem is solved ?. IT'S A Comin'
  • Post in thread: Is it possible to protect your Solar System against EMP?

I realized that China gets more money with US shoppers having the internet and our computers.... so no EMP from there...certain middle east folks might behave more that way....
  • Post in thread: Off grid new build home

More batteries but good plan. Schneider if better for surge is likely a good consideration we use Trace (t think same company as schneider?) CAUTION. once in a bazillion times your compressors and motors will all hit at once -it will happen. there is the surge that you want to protect from. If...
  • Post in thread: residential DIY grid-assist install -- 2kw roof array + Growatt 3k 24v + 24v chins batt bank

A lovely installation. Only thing I see is the sheet metal screw cover thingies over the roof brackets which appear to tuck under the shingles. you don't usuallu do that with only a 4/12 roof pitch, however the panels above help break the rain, plus you don't really have risk at that location on...
  • Post in thread: Removing heavy flooded batteries from basement -the movie

Thanks for your help guys with my upgrade questions, now on to the actual work. I thought I would document the process because there are likely other with 20 year old systems who are evolving as well.
  • Post in thread: Thinking about wind?

So our tower is 60'. We had two 4"x20' posts with square bolt flanges at the ends and one 3' one, all fabricated for us from the steel tube posts you hold up basement beams with. The we poured a 2x2x4' foundation with three 1"x 12 long L bolts embedded in the concrete. then we fabricated a kind...
  • Post in thread: Victron BMV 712 setting question I don’t see in the manual.

I think electricians must all be some kind of meditators becausevthey always walk around saying ”ohm”. And they like cabbage salads because they use ohmslaw.

  • Post in thread: To set up your main refrigerator as your diversion load

On clear days we already produce more than we need in the daytime for just lights, fans, computers, and sump pump, so I am adding a relay to transfer the refrigerator circuit only when we are at float voltage. At night when we drop below float, the fridge stays shut mostly anyway, so it's a good...
  • Post in thread: another Epever charge controller setting thread BUT about using flooded settings group for LifePo4

Guys thank you so much for your attempts at help. Not to get friggin mushy but it appears that some people actually care and want to help. that's cool. I hope to follow up if I can't get the mt50 to take the float and bulk settings I seek.
  • Post in thread: An encouragement to those who have built their system

MANUAL QUOTE- (therefore a compliment) “Lend freely asking nothing in return” is something I try to live by, but I believe wisdom would have the rescue swimmer take great pains to not drown with the swimmer in trouble whom they’re trying to rescue. Even God gives freedom of choices to mankind...

  • Post in thread: Interesting tree mount for morning light

20 years ago I had been given a lot of remnant wire and I am using it up. #6 would have been welcome, however at least I do not have to be concerned with voltage drop.... the voltages of the panel throughout the day sits around 27, which is good I think.
  • Post in thread: New warranty battery into 1 year old bank? help

Thanks Mr Eggo!, JunglePower, i also have an opinion after watching since 4-22. They say that unlike lead acid batteries which will self level in their joined groups, lithium does not. I can't disagree without knowing chemistry, however I have found that leaving some panels on even though the...
  • Post in thread: Wind power ??

good lord guys what a "discussion" I think you are all( almost all) right .I have been doing wind for 19/20 years, and can say this compared to solar it sucks, but unless you live near a stream, river, waterfall, geyser or something with motion its one of the few ways to create power in the...
  • Post in thread: “Smart” transfer switch?

he I just realized that because the transfer panel has a dpdt for that dedicated circuit I can just make a neat little "parasitic" module right with the amazon switch next to that panel with the switches as parallel clones. Then the only new wire run is 2 conductor 24v from the inverter relay.
  • Post in thread: Solar Panel snow removal made easy

yeah it is in place aimed down a driveway trajectory specifically for sunrise to 11 AM light (getting 34v-36/ 11A at 10Am) the photo was later in day. the other tree had other issues ha
  • Post in thread: Manual balance of new bank question FOLLOWUP Question

After setup snd first group bulk and a 12 hour float the mid point imbalance was 2.9%. though at one point it had reached 6% imbalance, but as we were still well below any high voltage cutoffs I just bit my nails and watched, praying desperately that the batteries which I purchased instead of a...

mostly haircuts so we can keep the animals below happy as well as retain some privacy...one forum guy said "I trim my trees at the grass" I liked that. Pic is current haircut state, will fell 3 large surrounding trees after the push to get the turbine up before winter is done. Then again in 5-7...
  • Post in thread: Manual balance of new bank question FOLLOWUP Question

Well I reworked the rear buss eliminating 77” of wire I didnt lnow i had compiled, and filled in the crimps with solder. It just looks more dialed in. I also played whack-a-mole trying to top balance one at a time while stringing wire. Testing saturday
  • Post in thread: Diversion loads for freezer possible?

OK so this is how it would work I think #6 wire fits and that will be ok OK so this is how it would work. If this works it may help a lot of us. The low wattage energy efficient chest freezer gets set to full on, no internal thermostat needed. An inexpensive temperature probe and switch...

  • Post in thread: Temp sensor and NiCad vs Lead setting for LifPo4 with Trace SW4024

Just got off phone with xantrex. Talked to them in January to make sure could use for Lifpo4. Just got off phone with them after reading your questions. Pretty much same thing that sunshineeggo said. For the SW4024 use the lead acid and not nicad setting in section 10 Unplugging the phone jack...
  • Post in thread: Switching to Lithium with 29 year old Trace/Xantrex/Hybrid system

This is our old bank. a zoom will show how I didn't know they were still connected the last 2 years. (see all the drips from overcharging-( I had turned off inverter and “mills” but forgot that the C40 was direct). These were fifty two Exide 6v lead acid golf cart batteries, bought in 2000. They...
