  • Post in thread: Off grid in the middle of no where, so hello!

Just found your site and I find it very informative. A little about ourselves. We live 30 minute drive back dirt trails from a main highway. Cattle country is the norm all around us. We own 20 acres, fenced off from the cattle. Our solar system Altesolar turn key Tiny House Base Kit 3 We went...

Remote living, equals early retirement, equals full retirement in June, equals freedom. Really though I work harder now then I ever did when I worked for a living. Off grid living is hard work when you add in farm life. But, yes I would turn off all equipment and flip every breaker off. And thanks ?
  • Post in thread: Panel angle?

I live near Spokane Wa which is at 47 degrees and run my panels at 54 degrees all year long. Yes, I suffer some in the summer but with fixed panels it more than makes up for it due to our long winters. As for my solar well it is pole mounted so I can rotate and adjust angle all the time for...

It is once you get to it. We see deer, elk, grouse, quail, badgers, foxes and coyotes. Pocket gophers, mice and pack rats and chipmunks. Makes gardening fun and entertaining.
  • Post in thread: Courious qustion?

That's all I want to discharge my fla batteries.
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

My dad once told me when I asked him when he was going to retire. He said retire from what, when you're doing what you like there is nothing to retire from. So for me, I get to draw social security in August and that's about all retirement means. Otherwise I do what I want when I want how I want.
  • Post in thread: Charging with suitcase generator?

It says on the front of the generator. Looks like a fancy V2. The V1 doesn't say anything on it.
  • Post in thread: Wife wants to use her 1500 watt convection oven.

    Nope Married over thirty years
  • Post in thread: What Propane Generator to Pair With Hysolis Apollo 5K

When we put our off grid system in we were told the size generator thing too. Well, simple solution, shed the load, charge batteries a little bit, bring load back online slowly as generator allows.
  • Post in thread: Off grid in the middle of no where, so hello!

I try to never drain my lead acid batteries below 80%. They'll last longer and my little generator can't push the amps if I drain too low. My daughter has a 1500watt Jackery and she pulled it down to 10%. I was on generator the next morning and didn't know she was charging it. I had to quickly...
  • Post in thread: Total Noob wants to run a mini fridge

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but that little battery won't work, not even for 24 hours. Reason, I have a dorm fridge without freezer. It says it draws 77watts per hour. That's 1848watts per 24 hours to account for cloudy days and I haven't added in the watts that little inverter in...
  • Post in thread: 12v 100amp vs. 24v 50amp setup with Victron or Samlex

I have the Samlex 4024. I'm on my 2nd one. 1st one had one of the 9 temperature sensors go bad. Samlex replaced the unit. Now it works like it did when the 1st one was new. What it would do is think it was overheated when it was turned off after heavy load. And I would put a fan on it to cool it...
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

    I would think so.
  • Post in thread: Courious qustion?

Oh, my Midnight epanel came with a shunt but I took it out as I didn't have a meter to wire to it. Also, 80% is important because i have a way under powered 2000watt generator and if the amps get too high it can't handle the load.
  • Post in thread: A little confused about inverter cable sizing

I use 4/0 welding cables for everything. Costly yes, voltage drop no. Missouri wind and power original owner said it like this. Ac travels on the inside of the wire. Hence thats the reason solid copper wire can be used with it and you can run long distances. However, dc travels on the outside...
  • Post in thread: Cable size/fusing

I'm late into this one. I would use 4/0 welding cable and be worry free forever. Costly yes, voltage loss no. The one thing nobody told me except for Missouri wind and power is dc travels on the outside of the wire. So more strains you got the better.
  • Post in thread: Full Off Grid Solar - Design Help Needed

Hi, my wife and I live in the Davenport, Wa. area for almost a year now completely off grid. We have a separate well system as well. Our main power comes from 6 - 310watt panels, 24 volt system with a 2kw generator. Bought from Altestore it's called the tiny house base kit 3. 8 - 6 volt Trojan...
  • Post in thread: Courious qustion?

I use a hygrometer monthly. 2 cells in one battery are slightly lower but still in within range according to a Trojan tech. He said I might want to charge it separate from the banks if I'm concerned. Inline equipment wouldn't tell me this. I'm just trying to make sure my inverter low cutoff...
  • Post in thread: Charging with suitcase generator?

It's sad theV1 engine is japanese made and the V2 is Chinese.
  • Post in thread: Cheap Starter Battery 24v - Can I use any Leisure Battery?

If during the day yes. If at night no. Not enough amp hours.
  • Post in thread: Wife wants to use her 1500 watt convection oven.

Sorry my bad 24vdc inverter. I run my panels in a 3s2p configuration into a combiner box and I'm just about maxed out on my charge controller. I do have one more slot for another breaker if I want to add one string of one. Then I'd be over voltage by 10vdc to the controller. Would that hurt...
  • Post in thread: Wife wants to use her 1500 watt convection oven.

Also note I never worry about c rate because I have no intention of using these Trojans much. I never discharge more the 25% meaning I have 75% left to never use.
  • Post in thread: Wife wants to use her 1500 watt convection oven.

    Two strings for 24v
  • Post in thread: No Inverter Setup

Easily done, my small home has both DC lightning when the inverter is off and AC lightning when inverter is on or when generator is on. I use cheap 12vdc trailer tail lights and led bulbs. Remove the covers to let more light out. For more brightness positive wire to both hot leads on tail light...
  • Post in thread: Off grid internet

I use Inland Cellular here in eastern Washington. It's just for unlimited internet because I don't like cell phones. It's just one of those little pucks called a Franklin for $75 per month.
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

Ohh, okay I never use my bulk on the charge controller. Instead I use my inverter when on generator every morning. It has a three stage charge cycle. Or don't worry about bulk as I never pull my batteries down anyway. When system is not in use I shut it down. If when we get up I just turn the...
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

Going on 3 month vacation and wondering how I should store my 24 volt batteries. Eight flooded lead acid batteries, four in series the parrelled. Do I need to leave my Flexmax 80 on, limit the bulk. Or just turn everything off by turning all breakers off.
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

Just curious why you run your float voltage so high. Trojan recommends 27.2v at 29.6v my batteries are starting to gas. But anyway I I think your saying leave the charge controller on.
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

So when we get back they should be around 10% soc?
  • Post in thread: Going on 3 month vacation

Or I should have said 90% soc.
