And climate change means Santa's house is warming up, so he has less time with the elves to make all the presents for all the little kids mining cobalt for batteries.Southern blight Spreads
A stem and root rot disease that affects 500 plant species is caused by a fungus, Agroathelia rolfsii. It’s often thought of as affecting hot Southern gardens, but was first seen in Pennsylvania in 2018.
How Urgent is Climate Change?
When compared to global nuclear war, the spread of communism, inflation, cost of health care, or gun violence it seems pretty small because we don't see the changes in our day to day lives. We don't see or attribute the suffering it causes like we do on child-labor in African countries or the billions in the sex slave industry.
Whatever your big concerns are, climate change is probably making
them worse. For example, weaning the world off gas & oil removes
income from countries (e.g., Russia) reducing their ability to wage
wars.
Inflation: The cost of Weather Disasters
Probably the most concrete cost to point to is the increase we've spent on weather related disasters as shown to the right. Each years it costs us billions, had we had the foresight to spend that money on prevention we could have fixed the problem by now.
The longer we delay, the more it costs us
Because it's not urgent, we delay. As we delay more GHGs go into
the atmosphere where they will live for 100s of years. So not only
will the temperature go higher, but we'll have problems for longer.
The only line in the graph to the right that keeps things were we are
now (you know, spending $600 billion a year on weather) is the green
one. Current policies, because it's not urgent, put us at 2.5 to 2.9C by
2100. Some tipping points have already started and they can push the
temperature beyond expectations.
Reducing emissions is a start, but what's there stays there for 100s of
years unless we spend to remove it faster. That means we're already
committed to 100s of years of warming.
Emissions going down doesn't halt warming
It is Killing people as well as animals
The WHO predicts that between 2030 and 2050 there will be 250,000 additional deaths from climate change induced undernutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress alone. A study from the Monash University found there were five million deaths annually due to abnormal hot and cold temperatures between 2000 and 2019. The Bramble Cay melomys is the first species officially recognized to have gone extinct from climate change.
Migration
People coming across the border worry you? Some of those people are leaving their homes due to environmental changes. The EU has been flooded with people leaving thier homelands, and it's happening here too. One million Somalis were displaced by drought in 2022 alone. ref
We don't know what we Don't Know
The original climate change accord set the +1.5C to be safe and give some margin from the +2.0C where it was believed tipping points would come into play. The problem is, a lot of the dangers we face and where tipping points occur are based on puzzling the past events together. If it were one thing it could happen sooner or later. But it's not one thing, it's many things; so some will happen sooner. Some (melting of ice with methane, loss of albedo from melting ice) are already happening.
What can you do?
All the little things you can do will help of course (e.g., composting, insulation, home gardening, switching to an BEV/PHEV/FCEV for your next car purchase).
But probably the most important thing you can do is vote for the guys promising climate change action and get interviewed why you did. If enough people say both parties were essentially the same on big issues and it was climate change that tipped the balance the other parties will notice and adapt. Currently, the top leadership of the parties are fundamentally different on this issue. The election will probably be close, so even a small percentage switching their vote will make a difference. ref
No. I just think that overwhelming scientific evidence is better than overwhelming social media bull shit.
Calling ppl deniers does not advance anything. It creates wider divideand yet here you are, voicing yours's and other deniers opinions. (seems all is good)
D71, I get that, but if I posted climate change is a hoax, even with all the informationCalling ppl deniers does not advance anything. It creates wider divide
Not really we all have to share this planet. Ppl have always disagreed. The problem we have now is one side is taking money and inconvenience the other side and if they protest are called denier.D71, I get that, but if I posted climate change is a hoax, even with all the information
posted, wouldn't that make me a climate change denier? wouldn't that me on me?
D71, I get that, but I just got a new truck from work, it's an ICE.(crap!)Some of us object to being forced to comply with their plans.
See it worked. Called increased taxation and national debt …. Most frogs don’t realize getting boiled if slowly raise heat until fully cooked.D71, I get that, but I just got a new truck from work, it's an ICE.(crap!)
I'm not seeing the forced part yet.
D71, IMO my grand parents couldn't, my parent's couldn't, and my generations can'tgrand children won’t be able repay it for National Debt.
If they have something to gain by “Pushing it” as you say then it is certainly suspicious.Do you think that "scientific evidence" that is supported by people pushing a specific agenda is or is not "bullshit".
Have you seen the latest about Covid? All the official websites talked about it. Told everyone questioning them were misinformation and deniers. If they have something to gain by “Pushing it” as you say then it is certainly suspicious.
Just remember that the fossil fuel industry has paid enormous sums of money to “push against it”.
So, I believe there is adequate reasons to consider both sides.
However, getting your information from social media is BULL SHIT.
There are scientific journals where you can get and analyze both sides as a rational human being.
mazda had rotary powered hydrogen test cars running all over japan about 22 years ago. then toyota started a fuss about how dangerous and explosive the fuel tanks would be..... they did this to crush mazdas chances while they advanced their fuel cell tech.... mazda went about it old school with a medium pressure tank vice a fuel cell. and got boo-fued by toyota.20 years ago, I was 100% convinced that hydrogen and fuel cells were going to be the future.
I was looking forward to the day I could have a refrigerator sized fuel cell behind the house providing all my power ..... but, it never happened.
Maybe this new discovery of hydrogen reserves will change that?
Musk has been VERY negative about hydrogen, but that was prior to this discovery. It is interesting that Toyota has hung in there with hydrogen vehicles.
Whether it's electric or hydrogen, a large amount of infrastructure changes will be necessary.
Next time I have lunch with Trump I'll talk to him about it.
Opinion: Well that's a relief! Guess I can stop posting about it.Dumber than Texas... You probably think Ron DeSantis and the yahoos, grifters, simps, dolts, and dunderheads who populate the Florida Legislature are collectively incapable of solving even one of the bazillion issues facing this state. What with the slap-fights, pissing contests, and spiteful politicking, I can see how you might arrive at that conclusion... HB 1645 [also] bans offshore wind turbines because, er, we’re not sure why.
Opinion: Guess they didn't get the HB1645 memo...On the eve of another hurricane season, the insurance industry finally came out and said what almost everyone in Florida expected. Industry experts recently acknowledged that insurers may be forced to raise the property insurance premiums
Europe’s highest human rights court ruled Tuesday that its member nations have an obligation to protect their citizens from the ill effects of climate change, but still threw out a high-profile case
Opinion: Bravely going where no man has gone before...If the anomaly does not stabilise by August, ‘the world will be in uncharted territory’, says climate expert
Don't give in to hysteria. There's no need for such extremes to solve the problem, all of that is just crap spewed out to make you afraid. Electrification with renewables will cost less and improve everyone's life in a myriad ways (e.g., no smog from cars when everyone has an EV).So all we are asking is that humans do without almost everything they like, eat bugs, and die fast,...
Yet the Trudeau government frames the rebate as “free money” for Canadians, and demonizes anybody who wants to “Axe The Tax” as though they are trying to take money away from taxpayers.“most households will experience a net loss of income from the federal carbon tax, even after rebates.
Specifically, in fiscal year 2024-25, 60 per cent of households in Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Manitoba will pay more in carbon taxes than what they receive in rebates, after accounting for both direct and indirect costs of the carbon tax. By 2030, 80 per cent of households in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. will be worse off, as will 60 per cent of households in Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Indeed, according to the PBO estimates, the carbon tax will cost the average Canadian household between $377 and $911 in 2024-25—even after rebates, with Albertans being the most affected. As the carbon tax escalates annually, the financial burden will intensify. By 2030, the carbon tax’s average net cost for Canadian households will rise to $1,490 in Manitoba, $1,723 in Saskatchewan, $1,820 in Ontario and $2,773 in Alberta.”

The Libs are going keep doubling-down on the nonsensical claim that #AxeTheTax would actually take money away from Canadians.

The discrepancies in values and aims between nation states already makes the 100% conformity that climate action requires a non-starter.“Let me stop you right there…”

Fortunately, the genie is out of the bottle now – Climate The Movie is being circulated far and wide, even having been uploaded to the decentralized InterPlanetary File SystemI'm thinking we can get 10,000 people to report "Climate: the Movie" on YouTube as having harmful and misleading content.
