    Stolen solar panels?

You can also get a carbide pen and etch your name, or code number, on your panels to ID them if they are stolen. A carbide pen works on plastic, metal, glass, ceramic, all kinds of things. Permanent ink COULD be washed off by solvents, although not completely in many cases. Sometimes I use the...

    Spreading the word

Yes. The sewing machine is only drawing 0.4amps (400ma) so pretty much all solar "generators" (I hate that name) will provide that at their AC outlet. If they get a moderately expensive solar "generator" that will provide 10amps or more on the AC outlet they can use it for other things, like a...

Hey can someone check this out and see if it is ligit

From video: "These are designed for specific regions." Because in North America we use, what, 60hz power? And UK uses 50Hz I think. Or vice versa. Or versa vice. And much of Europe uses 220-240vac. Wouldn't a travel convertor handle that though, if it can handle the amps the charger wants to draw?

I read something interesting I need clarification!

Say whaaat? It just does a simple votage regulation with no increasing of the amps like in a transformer? I've seen voltage regulator chips. They just chop down the voltage to, say 3.3vdc, and the rest of the power is lost as heat.

Sudden Battery cut off under load

You already said you would charge up the pack and measure the voltage of each battery when charge, that's good. When the battery pack cuts off, can you measure the voltage of each cell then too? You might have a bad cell. Also, what brand are the batteries? I'm starting to notice a change in...

Discharging battery results vs charging results

I'm testing some AA lithium batteries that are charged via a built-in micro-usb port. On power banks I normally test via a discharge test. I do not yet have the equipment to test these AA cells via a discharge test. Most USB testers only go down to 3.7vdc. But when testing a lithium power bank...

    Testing capacity of AA battery

@snoobler It's the AA cell common to the US. Nominal voltage is 1.5vdc. I will be using a load of about 200-400ma to test the capacity. Link: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R2KK5P7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

    Testing capacity of AA battery

Yes I can put the batteries in a single AA holder and wire it to a tester if needed. The problem here is the range of voltage the tester will test. So I'd prefer a device that has 2 screw terminals (+ and -) for the battery.

    Testing capacity of AA battery

I'm trying to test the capacity of some AA lithium batteries that are charged from a micro-usb port. I have tested their capacity while charging, now I want to test their capacity from discharging and compare the results. I'm having a very hard time finding testers that willi go down to 1vdc or...

At 90w 12vdc your fan is running at 7.5amps. It might be wise to get a speed controller that handles those higher amps.

    Buying from Aliexpress

Shipping from Aliexpress can take 4-8 weeks to get to you. Items I ordered in November mostly didn't get here until 6-7 weeks later, which is the Xmas season here in the US. Which means lots of shipping packages.

    Livestock Water Heating

What about installing a passive solar heater on the south side of the barn (where the sun shines the most) and have water tubing going through that heater? Some people use the passive solar heater to heat the whole barn if it's insulated enough. Something like this but larger: Here's an...

Just go to Youtube and search for ram pump. Lots of fun videos there. Although some water is wasted using this powerless pump, you can still pump a long ways horizontally and vertically.

Small $100 "gateway drug" Hobby solar system

Great idea about the clothes drying rack! Did you get your wife's permission to use that? :) I am thinking of getting more panels in the spring (Renogy) but I cannot mount them on the roof myself as that would void my new roof warranty. And a licensed installer would be too expensive for me.

1.5 Watt panel supplying power coffee grinder for my coffee grinder every morning but I need a small controller

I have a manual hand grinder with a ceramic grinding cone, I love it. I have a lot of control over the grind, the ceramic grinders are the best. And it's a lot cheaper than a $100 invertor! It was about $35usd.

1.5 Watt panel supplying power coffee grinder for my coffee grinder every morning but I need a small controller

My Chinese charge controller for my 12v lead acid battery has an LCD display with a backlight. I can't figure out how to turn off the display as I'm not familiar with the pinouts of the display. Like the OP, I only have a problem with the 12v battery slowly declining during the winter, we have...

Amazon threatens to fire employees who speak out on climate-change

I think the huge island of plastic garbage in all major oceans is a bit more easy to prove it exists. 46% of this ocean garbage are fishing nets. 70% of the garbage comes from Asia, not the US or North America.

Solar system for home with intermittent electricity in hot country

I saw a documentary on a Roman air conditioner that was part of the architecture. At one end of the house they had a black-painted chimney on top of the house about 3 ft tall. It wasn't connected to anything, but to a hole in the roof. The sun heated up the chimney and drew up air from the house...

Keeping battery warm enough to charge

In Michigan we dig a hole 3 ft deep to be below the frost line when installing fence posts. If you're in a colder area, like Alaska, you might need to dig deeper. This is why I make a mark on my shovel handle 3 ft from the tip of the shovel point. YMMV. Tip: I spray painted my new treated...

Will an IR remote control penetrate a himalayan salt block or selenite tower?

I have a selenite tower, it's a large crystal with a 1.2" hole down the center and the walls are translucent, solid material at least 3/4" thick. I want to put a small LED puck inside that changes colors and control it with an IR remote control. Since I cannot find a system that uses an LED puck...

Iowa wants you to pay utilities even if you are totally off-grid and don't use grid power.

Well in some states, like Colorado, it's illegal to collect rain water. They don't tax it, they just ban some things. Something about water rights of nearby states that was agreed upon over 100 years ago. Something to do with rivers, and the politicians say rain is just a river in the sky, so...

Jehu posted these from EVWest. seems too good to be true.

Price is down to $1516 today. Since these are 60 volt, do I need to give them 60 vdc to charge them? I don't have PV panels to do that high a voltage.

No problem. You can disagree if you want also, I prefer to have as much experience from other people as possible. :) But I just try to add my 2 cents to help everyone out as a community. The internet is a great place for community, but we need real life community more too.

    Online Watt/Solar Calculators

Watts = amps * volts Volts = watts / amps Amps = watts / volts If you want the thing on the left side of =, you need the other 2 on the right side of the equation. On a related note, there are many ohms law calculator charts too, which can be handy. Here's one. Here's a search for more...

    Fridge Power Usage

The web page doesn't say if he measured the power of the fridge when the compressor was running or not, a very important detail which was missed. The page also doesn't say how he calculated that number. Did he measure power usage over 30 days and divide by 30? Or some other method? The devil is...

    Fridge Power Usage

That's the average watts per hour over a 24 hour period but compressors don't work that way. They draw a BUNCH of power when the compressor first starts, then will draw less while it runs, then it will stop running for maybe 20 minutes, then repeat the process. It's like a fluorescent light...

    Unstable Grid

But Honda lasts a lot longer with less trouble. So the cost of running it (and repairs) is significantly lower per year over the long term. Honda engines of all types have a really good reputation, as do Toyota. The cost of an item is not just the initial cost, it's the total cost of ownership...

Watts used for a lead acid battery scooter charger?

Maybe some wires on the scooter smoked a bunch. I had that happen on a tiny desktop vacuum using only a single AA battery. How the darn thing drew enough current to set the wire coating smoking is beyond me. But it was a neat trick! I can't even do the same trick by connecting 2 wires directly...
