4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

    I wish I didn’t know this. I don’t like those odds.

4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

Looks like the main event will hit the west coast about 6 pm Saturday if I figured the 1 am Sunday UTC time difference correctly. I don’t think we’ll see a light show in daylight.

Very unlikely, but it sells papers.

4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

I’m sure our well prepared government has hundreds of thousands of transformers and switchgear standing by just for situations like this 😝

4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

Yeah, I think I’m opening the breaker to the grid before I go to work in the morning. Probably the best thing to do. I’ve got one big house surge arrestor for what ever that’s worth.

Dielectric grease on cable lugs? Lets test!

When you lubricate the threads you increase the tension in the threads of the older terminals. The welded stud type is actually a captivated stud within a welded on aluminum puck. I’ve heard of both types pulling out when exceeding the torque specs for that cell model.

Smoke alarm with dry contact or 12v relay? To shut down battery bank.

I know that smoldering and a burning fire emit different substances into the air, having a combination ion and photoelectric will give you the very earliest warning possible . Add a carbon monoxide detector for hydrogen detection you would have the ultimate system. I have a heat detector but by...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Before you panic see how hot it gets. If it needs some help a tiny fan can help a ton.

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Happens to be my today’s project. Air blows in the plenum area, then across the tops of the batteries and out the top rear of the cover (seen in background). My bms’s are never much above ambient but my cells are getting warm in summer. I found that if I remove heat when it’s cooler 3AM to 10AM...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

No, I mean at a full state of charge, the point where your voltage hits a wall and stays there a bit. The algorithm in my inverters doesn’t give me access to absorb time, usually between 15 or 45 minutes. Once that’s done it the inverter won’t pick back up until it reaches the float voltage of...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

One thing about the JK. If it is rated for continuous discharge 200 amps, I’d believe that if it was in the open with a fan blowing on it. If it’s on the side of a box and it can do convection cooling I say 150 continuous. Enclosed 100 or less. There’s very little loss through the bms and it’s...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

I think the new “inverter” JK has pre charge and many NEW built batteries now have it. I just don’t need closed loop when a 2 amp balancer can do it. Just one less thing to go wrong. It’s been a year and two months since the first two started and have zero balance issues even with a week or so...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Get in line about bad luck. I have proof that there is a god, because this much bad luck is statistically impossible. Just haven’t figured out what I did to tick him off.

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Yes that’ll work but think about getting a disconnect/breaker rated for better than just 48vdc in the future.

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Not using pre charge resistor (no pre charge circuit in bms) is very hard on the system. Many people have fried FETs ( shorted closed ) blown fuses, blown capacitors and damaged contacts. The inrush is incredible. The only time we don’t do it is with a charger, but there’s a sequence. My son...

    Overdischarged batteries, no grid connection

Yeah. I’d open a mechanical disconnect, then enable the discharge in the bms, pre charge the inverter, now you can close the disconnect.

Dielectric grease on cable lugs? Lets test!

Yeah, I dealt with this stuff. The American version, Cosmoline gets to be a waxy, gummy substance after sitting for 60 years. Commissioned an old, very big lathe that had been sitting in a government warehouse (think last scene in the original Raiders of the Lost Ark). Luckily it was primarily...

Dielectric grease on cable lugs? Lets test!

1Z-L is excellent and mandatory for metal on metal (bronze, copper or brass) low rotational speed, high current rotary grounds of that brand that specifies its use. 1Z-L is made of 30% graphite powder and the balance mineral oil (probably paraffin oil-heavy). I wouldn’t use it other types of...

Dielectric grease on cable lugs? Lets test!

Probably one my biggest surprises on a boat was how corrosive vented lead acid batteries are in a confined humid hot environment. When I removed them and went to AGMs the corrosion just stoped.

A few take aways from life experiences. Silicone spray works well for a lot of things but it is thin and can run and displace in time. Silicone grease also works well however it can thin and migrate with time. Both silicones can soften or break down other things made of silicone like O rings or...

250 Feet from 12 Panel PV Array to EG4 6000XP Inverter - Rot Roh?

Four runs plus a ground. I’m thinking you’re going to have 6 in series. If it were me I’d be thinking 8AWG. The ground a 10.

JK-BMS says 3.317V per cell but only 3% SoC

You need a very stable charge current to do that no loads kicking on or off and a highly accurate clamp meter. I’d suggest a 20 to 30 amp charge load.

JK-BMS says 3.317V per cell but only 3% SoC

You never want to be using the protection of your bms on a regular basis. That’s your last line of defense. When it’s triggered it’s opening your charge side FETs of your bms and if the value is left there it may do this a dozen times or more each cycle. No Bueno! It’s best to set your...

    Good forecasting app for solar

For me it’s more about energy management. I see a lot of sun and I’ll be planning on running a lot of load to take advantage of the free energy. Lots of sun= plan on a laundry day.

    My JK setting presently
  28. S

JK-BMS says 3.317V per cell but only 3% SoC

Yes, but to set it in stone as far as the bms is concerned, you need to charge till it trips that temporally lowered cell voltage protection(OVP) Once it’s done that the bms should remember that value. Just remember to move the protection value back once done...

Crimpers - How do you manage those annoying flyaway strands (not a haircare thread)

Crimpers - How do you manage those annoying flyaway strands (not a haircare thread)

Hydraulic crimpers are great but it’s always a flip of a coin if you get a good one( the right dies for the country you in or leaking ram/valve). I don’t recommend any brand because the quality changes constantly.

Crimpers - How do you manage those annoying flyaway strands (not a haircare thread)

If you tried to use it as bought, it won’t work for beans. The wheel needs to be modified, then it works like gangbusters.

Thanks,Dad, For Teaching Me to DIY Stuff

Yeah, I’m not installing for others either. Family’s passed on and all my friends are self sufficient or just pay for it. Definitely not doing it for a neighbor even for cash. Too many new water heaters have issues and I don’t need to be in the middle of it. My advice is free.

Crimpers - How do you manage those annoying flyaway strands (not a haircare thread)

I use a use a tubing cutter that I modified the wheel in a lathe. I thinned and sharpened it but not to a razor edge. I mark the knob so it doesn’t get too deep and nick the strands. If I know the lug barrel is a bit tighter than normal(or AWG vs metric variation) I’ll cut it twice so there’s a...

    Opinion on inverter and batteries

I think that OP’s Solaredge inverter is an older unit and isn’t controlled by the utility(they have to buy). It would be nice if the OP could keep it (and grandfathered rates) and get batteries with a parallel system. That might take some creativity.

    Opinion on inverter and batteries

What the state of confusion believes and common sense (you) may be two entirely different things. I’m on your side….. and I feel your pain, because I’m here too. For a while more anyway.
