Sun tracking solar panel mount/kits.. why are they not more common?

For many locations that is true, until you factor in Snow, 5 months of the year...at least in some areas of the world. A single axis ground mount with a central pivot is not a lot of moving parts, and it pays to single axis tilt-up for Winter, then tilt back down again for Summer, mostly for the...

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

yeah I hear ya, I have never been interested in making videos, and our work on the homestead is purely self-reliance interest. That was part of our motivation to learn about solar as well. We run a successful business, and there is no shortage of work in that regard, but there is more to life...

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

Nope, we just did a visit to check them out, be sure they are healthy and good natured, I have young grand-kids that come to visit, so I wanted to see the goats and get an idea of how tame they are. Actually these are very nice well trained goats, and the 11-year old liked them immediately so...

What was your most interesting recent non solar project?

My wife and I have made arrangements for some Nigerian Dwarf milking Goats, they will arrive in June. So off to cut some lumber and get ready for the new members of the homestead. Luckily we have an 11-year-old girl here interested in being the one to look after them, and make some spending...

    Prices dropping, will this continue?

It is an unknown for now admittedly, I expect we will see far superior batteries long before we have time for 6000-8000 cycles on our LFP. The upgrade will not mean disposal of my current LFP cells, just repurpose them to run something less important in my life. I have the same plans for all my...

    Prices dropping, will this continue?

I will not be surprised to see a far better battery chemistry on the market within five years. I don't worry about 'cycle life' as a purchase decision parameter. All these cells may have fewer cycles than advertised - we really don't know - however the rate of innovation and the incentive to...

Safety check on my simple diagram please

The MPP's still need to link together to be able to create the 120 -240 correctly - if they don't share comms they can not regulate the phase difference. Each inverter also needs a connection to the SA.

Safety check on my simple diagram please

if you are making split phase 120/240 with the MPP 6548's then those MPP's need to have comms between them, each unit will connect with a USB to the Solar Assitant and report loads etc. I added a couple of expansion hubs to allow my solar assistant to have 8 USB inputs. It all works great.

Solarpowerstore.ca aka The Solar Power Store in Canada - any experience with their solar power kits?

I started wiith one Signature Solar Power 4 100Ah 48v and my second pack was the very first of the Solar Power Store's own (relabled) brand, the first run were quite a good price, also 100ah - both packs have been running three years now daily in my system. After the first two factory server...

    Martians

it has been studied, the solution involved directional drilling into areas below large lakes, where the perafrost was significanly thinner/shallower. Was a big item to get done in a remote locale.

    Martians

I expect the combination of cold and lack of moisture will create challenges to create a safe path for stray currents to "ground" on Mars. This was actually a real problem when I worked in permafrost areas of the Arctic, the "ground" didn't conduct electricity reliably.

    Rethinking my battery box

I have had good responses in the past from a local HVAC shop - when they are not busy they will brake-form sheet metal stuff for me that is too big for me to do with my own tooling. They seem pretty reasonble on the costs. Can't hurt to ask.

Extremely overheated BMS, fused Breaker and dead Inverter. What could be the root cause?

5500W inverter if pulling max current on a 48v battery is approx 115A - well under the 150A rating The BMS overheating may be poor connection or undersized wires connecting it to the loads. The breaker tried to trip, but fused closed - so something pulled higher than normal current, and once the...

    Battery draw down at night?

It Depends: My system runs my business and my home next door, typically the overnight draw-down on my 99.6kWh ESS will be 15% running both properties. If you have three days of ESS available, then any one day is about 33% and depending on what runs at night you may use 10-15% overnight.

Yeah, I figure since the 6Hp Air compressor cycling doesn't dim the lights like the DeathStar powering up, then all must be ok in the Solar Power Plant output.

Trying to find eg4 or equivalent in canada

I will chime in, I got my first 100Ah server rack from Sig Solar, it is a good battery, but cost me quite a bit more than the second 100Ah server which I got on a pre-order from Solar Parts Store (Orangeville/Barrie Ontario). Things have changed quite rapidly since then (2021) and today you can...

    More panels on the way

Interesting, but we don't really know unless we measure it. In my set up I am running three low-mid-tier MPP HF inverters in parallel. The inverter set up was/is for my business really but since it exceeded my expectations, and was just too much fun, I added in my home which is next door. Now...

You stated "it is hard to get a good stable waveform". I thought this may mean you have an Oscilloscope to track the waveform - to know it is "not stable", otherwise from where does your comment originate ? I have a picco scope for working on cars and tracking down ignition problems from...

NICE! Hope the roof is not too high up...and hope it is shingles not metal roofing !! For all the talk, I really don't think it matters that much, as long as the in-rush current is within the limits of the inverters. My HF inverters just hum along running shop equipment, Elect Dryer elec HWT...

    Class T fuse mounting

I recall the fuses are in a few sizes based on their capacity - ie the 100 - 200 class T will not fit in the holder for the 225-400A class T because the fuse/ holders go up in size with the amperage.

    Off-grid: illegal in Florida?

I do this as well. Mostly due to the northern lat / crappy overcast Nov-Dec period. Converting to USD I pay a minimum monthly charge (ie if zero kWh used) of $25 USD for the connection. As you say low cost back up system - doesn't take a lot of fuel in a generator to be at least this amount.

    Off-grid: illegal in Florida?

$20/mth? If the average home is using 1,000kWh per month, at an average cost of 15-cents per kWh - isn't this 150 per month? (and then again a lot of homes use more than 1,000kWh per month running A/C) Maybe I missed what you mean?

    Off topic, EV vehicle opinions…

We see auto dealerships do a 'facelift' every five years it seems - lots of expensive components just to freshen up the look of the buildings and look 'new' again, spending a lot more than a few hundred thousand ...they don't seem to be losing money.

    Freezer off of Solar panels

I disagree - the FLA (full load amps) may be considerably less than the in-rush to start up the freezer. Typical motors can be x3 or more the FLA rating for in-rush upon start up. I have a Kil-o-Watt and an In-Rush meter, my own freezers draw close to 20A to start, then drop down running. My...

    Off-grid: illegal in Florida?

Knowing the rules is key. I know a guy who wanted to build a simple small place - he lives alone raises some beef cows and does 'horse farming' ie pulls a 140-year old plow with a team and plants all by hand and likes it that way. Yeah he is old retired guy and not one to chat much. So he tells...
