EG4 18kPV Q+A general thread

I have zero export and fast zero export enabled. I have a meet metering agreement for an AC coupled sunny boy inverter that is grid tied only with no batteries. The sunny boy is on the meter side before the CTs and is what shows up as generation in the graphs.

Just looking for the best version to get the least goofy performance.
Have you looked at running the Sunny boy directly to the 18K gen port with AC couple?

The monitor.eg4electronics.com website is broken for parallel. It only shows one of the two. Earlier it didnt show anything but the PV total now it's only 1/2 of the pair. This is pretty sad. Apparently the people mangling the site have never heard of a regression test.

BTW, big deal move for Lifepower4 users

in our closed-loop tests, the Lifepower4 have exceeded lifecycle expectations by 50%
@SignatureSolarJames I got my batteries last year and it already has a 10-year warranty. What am I missing? My registration

RE: EG4 Monitor

I've been having a number of issues with the EG4 monitor over the last few days... I have two inverters in parallel and until maybe this morning it was not reporting anything from the secondary, the display was generally broken, stuff not working, and my charts are still messed up.

NOTE: I am not grid tied, I'm on a transfer switch. I have current sensors on both legs in my panel (green), at the feed from the outside panel to the transfer switch (red), HVAC (yellow) EVSE (blue), and my HWH and clothes dryer (purple) are on a mutually exclusive switch dryer has priority. (also note it's 114 at the moment, that yellow line is going to be flat for the next couple hours  i turn the air down at 1700)

So we see here, a little before 0730 the inverter cuts on, red (grid) goes to zero so the inverters are running the show. At 10AM my control computer cut on the EV relay, the car started charging at 24A. We see a couple of showers(bath) kicking the HWH at 8/9 a re-fluff on some clothes in the dryer, then another load drying around 11. The green line is clearly solidly above 6KW, peaking as high as 18kw, and yet.

The monitor chart (below) clearly shows little consumption at 1100 but a small spike in battery usage (makes sense, 13KW of PV another 5 from the batteries). I'm not sure what the orange line is showing, but it bears little reality to actual consumption.

At this point, I'd take anything on their page as fluid at best. At least it's sorta workin' for me now. That being said with perseverance I have tamed the modbus on the inverters, and I'm now recording the data every 30 seconds on my own, so I'll probably just do my own thing. If I ever get it vanilla I'll post a code link.

I updated my inverter to fAAB-1312 firmware. Prior, I had the inverter set to shut off grid power at 8:58am until 9:02pm. (Time of use rates). Since updating, however, it continues to pull from the grid between those times. I'm back to flipping the breaker that feeds the inverter. Did the logic change or a new setting I'm missing?

What setting are you using to "shut off grid"?

The newer firmware helps with dimming when in EPS mode.

can you do the firware upgrade over a network as when i log in at the 18kpv ip i see the screen in chinese and english option and at teh bottom it says firware upgrade but then wants to me to tell it where it is on my computer. In the past i did it from phone connected to 10.10.10.1 but have to go out into the storage room would be nice to do on the network from main home computer.

Signaturesolar can push the update remotely.

Or

You can do it locally using the eg4 monitor phone app and directly connecting to the dongle hotspot.

Does the computer have to be on Windows/Mac or can it be Linux also if not over network?

I completed the update of firmware (was two steps as i had not done in a while). and no i notice it no longer shows me on backup power when running off grid on solar/battery as it did before as other also showed in their posts. is that intentional? what is UPS mode now only battery? as displayed below is how it looks when on grid with connection for electric tower to house. before when on PV/Battery it was connected to Standby power icon. also notice a new item in top of settings called microgrid. any explanation as to that?Screenshot 2023-08-28 at 12.24.44 PM.png

Did you specifically ask Signature Solar to update your system to completely prevent any grid feedback?

I think firmware 1010 and 1110 were the only version that disabled the grid relays by default...eliminating any chance of grid backfeed.

This is true. Gilbert just had to move me back another version and all is working swimmingly.

that was fixed back at 1011 if I recall. you're saying that these new firmwares somehow lost the changes that stopped export when griod sell back is turned off? doesn't make sense an update to firmware would lose a prior fixed feature. I don't see any selling back but i just see no longer the eps mode showing up. I know @Markus sent out the change per firmware version i am going to look for that now and i will ask them,

Correct 1010? and 1110? were specifically programed to disconnect grid relays. This meets the requirements of those with grid connection that their utility strictly forbids grid feedback
