how long does insurance take to pay for itself? never or one major accident. the system I have built makes no financial sense, but thats not why im doing it. 1. learning a lot. challenging puzzle with lots of little efficiency games to chase. especially in winter with 3hrs of light and -30f...
  • Post in thread: Dishwasher Off-Grid 2024

I just got a GE 550 dishwasher and ran it on the one hour cycle and only pulled 415 Wh and used about 5 gal of water. (connected to hot water) Im trying to track energy consumption of appliances and made a google form for it. feel free to add to it (i put in rough numbers from this post...
  • Post in thread: Is such a thing as off grid internet possible?

the other day I passed a utility truck with a tent pitched over a comms hub near an intersection. Its about -20f out and there's guys in there working hard to keep the cat videos and memes flowing. That's why it costs money. However, I sympathize with the OP and get their point. There is ham...
  • Post in thread: How do you ventilate and heat the van? Aren't the two at odds with one another?

Friday was yesterday, Joe. Youre not fooling me. There will be moisture, if it doesn't come from outside it will come from what you exhale or from cooking. Not sure where we disagree. Nothing space age about it. Polyisocyanurate foam has been around since the 70s though its less flammable now...
  • Post in thread: Possible laundry solution

Oh, agreed. But if you already had a heat pump system that was near your generator shed, you could feed more heat into an existing system rather than make a new one. Only point I was making. High grade heat recovery if you had somewhere to put it anytime your generator is running would be...
  • Post in thread: Cheaper Than Propane: Heating my Shed with a Chinese Diesel Heater

I heat my battery/inverter unit with one of those diesel parking heaters. And use another for generator preheat. Tested down to minus 30f and works good. I built a little heater controller PCB with adjustable on off points to prevent short cycling of the heater. I think its set to turn on at 38...
  • Post in thread: Whats in your tool sled?

What's in your sled when you head out? I like to carry... 110v smart victron charger and Honda gen (currently in shop) Network gear, travel router, laptop DC bus cable, ring terminals and crimp tool Spare tesla model s modules Plato wire cutters and zip ties 1+1 spare multimeter with batteries...
  • Post in thread: Finally Installing our System (What Have I Done Wrong So Far?)

Are you near Fairbanks? Mine are fixed vertical and I'm working on a dump load controller. Currently boiling birch sap. Fire wood drier is next. Would be neat to compare notes if you are nearby.
  • Post in thread: Whats in your tool sled?

This was a bit tongue and cheek, just thought it was an odd mix of stuff I had to haul. What is the farthest you've had to go to get a tool you forgot or didn't have? I'm sure there are some good remote setup stories out there. I hauled a stack of 100w panels out to my family's cabin and sure...
  • Post in thread: Does Twisting The Wires In A Longer PV Run Help Avoid Problems..?

The panels are true DC but there will be some pulsed back emf from the mppt as it charges and dumps it's inductor. The more they spent on capacitors, the less of this there will be to see. If you are concerned about stray mag fields, twisting would help. But it will also take more cable to make...
  • Post in thread: Does Twisting The Wires In A Longer PV Run Help Avoid Problems..?

I think ncv is the e field component because it can detect under no load conditions. Not sure. What's its sample rate? Probably higher than a phone mems. Might be able to catch something near a cable during full sun/full charge rate. Then try twisting and see if it goes down.
  • Post in thread: Which Victron DC-DC converter to use?

I use a victron smart solar mppt as a DC to DC converter for charging a 12v lead acid from a 48v lipo. I talked with my distributor and they said this should work but is not supported. I tried it and have had no problems. 48v to pv in 12v to batt Loads if you want. The advantage is you get all...
  • Post in thread: How do you ventilate and heat the van? Aren't the two at odds with one another?

This. Except 1. Even if there is no water from outside, exhaled breath overnight is enough to cause a fair amount of moisture to build up in a space that small. My neighbor had his work van spray foamed with urethane, in a thin layer. Then it was coated in an egg shell bed liner that makes a...
  • Post in thread: Which Victron DC-DC converter to use?

I just ran a line from my lynx distribution on one of the inverter terminals. Its behind a 100a fuse, so, no. ? No, the 100|20s have a fuse on them next to the terminal block. I think they have a diode in them as well but there is always 48v on the PV side and its just tapers the charge when the...

Which HRV did they settle on to fix the condensation problem? Don't want your window fogging up!
  • Post in thread: DC Lighting plan

Big plus for dc led lights is no 120hz flicker. Very "calm" lighting if you are into that. Try putting 4x 12v lights in series. If one goes out you will have to play the Christmas lights game of which one went bad. Or two 24v lights. Each group will have to be on or off together.
  • Post in thread: What Would You Recommend as an Alternative to this System to Pressurize House's Plumbing?

I have a grundfos Scala 2 which has some issues with leaking thought the glass filled nylon case. Just installed a DAB mini 3 (or esybox3) and it is rad. Flow sensing, reports, water usage and power consumption on the screen. For a small farm system I also spun up a vfd on a 220v jet pump with...
  • Post in thread: Possible laundry solution

I run my 50gal electric water heater on 120v just fine. Its a new rheem from HD. P=V^2/R where r is the fixed value of the heating elements, halving voltage will give you 1/4 the power consumption. So it takes 4 times as long to heat the water as it would on 240 but I wanted the larger tank for...
  • Post in thread: Possible laundry solution

I saw the GE HP unit and have been eying it for a few months. It checks a lot of boxes except reliability (only been out for a year or two?). @hugemoth one of my concerns is freezing. Very cold here and cannot rule out a freeze up event. I imagine the heat pump would be okay in such a case...
  • Post in thread: Appliance energy benchmark dot com

There are plenty of sites that say how many watts various appliances consume based off the electrical data plate. "Toaster 700 to 1200w" They often have pretty large range as it covers a large set of models, making it rather less useful for anything besides peak inverter sizing. I'm...
  • Post in thread: Advice on properly charging Kilovault HLX+

I heard the same. They were dumping stock to recoup capital as they closed up shop. There's like one guy answering the phone now, rough job... My hlx+ will just go open contact if the voltage is too high. Then the pack will shut down and you have to hit the button to turn it back on. I have had...
  • Post in thread: Possible laundry solution

My generator is not anywhere near my house. Not walking laundry down to my solar system. Yes, all technically feasible I get it. But in practice I'd be more likely to put a diesel parking heater in a dryer before I used recaptured generator heat. And while were at it, why not run the generator...
  • Post in thread: 6s Li Ion charger search

Tesla modules are 6s 22v, not 24v. Looking for a variable output charger in that range. The 120vin, 24v out, 16a one https://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Datasheet-Blue-Smart-IP22-Charger-120-VAC-EN.pdf
  • Post in thread: Possible laundry solution

Regarding the diesel heater, my thought was to have the elements disconnected in the winter but the signal runs an ac relay which controls the power to the diesel pump. That way you start the dryer on sensing mode, its running and then start the heater. It will run until the humidity sensor...
  • Post in thread: Cheaper Than Propane: Heating my Shed with a Chinese Diesel Heater

The box is a 6ft cube mini shipping container About R 24. Kind of the minimum for here but is working pretty well. 6ft mini iso cube framed and urethane spray foamed. Studs are inset so there is foam behind and no thermal bridging except on floor edges. Floor is 4in urethane board with plywood...
  • Post in thread: Kilovault hlx+ for UPS

Update. Got it working, kind of. -Switched the Multiplus out for a 24v 3kw growwatt. -Running the growwatt disconnected from grid. -Using a drok ac to DC converter to charge/run the batteries. This is the key. The drok allows me to set charge current so it it just below peak demand. When...
  • Post in thread: Redundancy with heating

+1 for wood stove. The peace of mind it provides when its cold out is second to none. Even if its just a tertiary heat source I think its important to have. Kuma makes a oil drip stove that uses no power and would work for this as well. For secondary Pellet stoves, I've seen some that draw a...
  • Post in thread: 6s Li Ion charger search

Yes, that is all correct. Does anyone have useful recommendations for chargers?
  • Post in thread: Redundancy with heating

I As far as I know there is just a small and a large. The kW outputs are kind of meaningless. But they are cheap and they do work! I used one as primary heat in my cabin when my stove was in for maintenance and besides being loud and running through more fuel, it did the job. For the price...
