  • Post in thread: Rant: EG4 48v 100ah battery has faulty BMS. Signature solar customer service is TERRIBLE

I agree, that’s why I built my own system. I started playing with 12 volt systems 10 years ago and graduated up to 20kWp system I installed on my own. If I paid someone to buy/install it, it would have cost 3x more and I would have been tethered to the installer (which isn’t even pracatical at...
  • Post in thread: Anyone had lightning strike your array and get saved by over current protection?

6 figures add 2 inches. 7 figures it just doesn't matter
  • Post in thread: ANOTHER of wills videos gets taken down due to criticism...

What a load of nonsense! You should have left it up with a big disclaimer. The 240volt video was the best one I have seen (at least for my needs), I’m not confident enough to do it myself, but this video helps me be a better consumer of services and products when I do hire someone to do it for...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K All in One Inverter Released.

I am 60 and own a software company doing DOD contracting. I am personally IAM and IAP level III certified. I work with with many engineers way more qualified than me (I'm the old guy now), and they laugh when discussed my inverter being compromised. If China attacks my inverter, I think we have...
  • Post in thread: Adding battery capacity later on

I think the issue of most concern is that the battery industry is changing very fast and vendors will come out with new models, new chemistries, new capacities, new BMS's, new communications standards, etc and you won't ever get a perfectly matched system like you do if you buy the capacity you...
  • Post in thread: How to get warranty help for an SOK 48V100 battery?

Will Prowse has spawned a battery-builder-DIY cult. I think they even have secret handshake, so tread carefully on these matters here….
  • Post in thread: California proposes “blatant seizure of property” in solar ruling

My firm already is using drones to do tax assessment with AI recognition of assets like panels, sheds, etc. Nowhere to hide folks. The positive is that I’m no longer developing drones to kill people, so that’s progress.
  • Post in thread: Trophy Batteries

Yes. That’s commendable, for sure. I feel badly for them, but they should have given away a dozen or so sets of batteries to people to evaluate in the real world for a year, instead of making paying customers their product development division. I’m not sure what to do with my batteries now.
  • Post in thread: Do You Ever Regret Going Off Grid?

I regret getting solar because that led to starlink, which lead to working at my off grid home.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark not a good company to deal with 12k

I've been to China many times. Hard working, family-oriented people all in all. I don't share the hate. I've got the money, so I can afford the best, but I understand many don't.
  • Post in thread: Solar charging on cloudy days

I love my 1800 RPM diesel generator. I have 100 gallon tank feeding it. I use it exclusively for charging my battery bank in these long winter nights. 1800 RPM generator are quiet and last forever. The biggest issue with them is that they can be hard to start in super cold weather sometimes.
  • Post in thread: EG4 Chargeverter

Yeah, that's what I generally believe. Maybe Texans just don't believe it ever gets colder than 14F on earth.
  • Post in thread: Anyone had lightning strike your array and get saved by over current protection?

I think I see the makings for a good YouTube test video here... Who wants to volunteer holding a metal rod in the air?
  • Post in thread: Xmas lights

I’m sure this is obvious to most folks, ( at least those who still feel it’s okay to publicly discuss Christmas), but now that I have solar/batteries i pay a lot more attention to these things., I measured my old Christmas tree lights and discovered that the string was using over 175 watts for...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark not a good company to deal with 12k

Two well-reasoned, balanced posts in a row. Things are looking up!
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark problems by David Poz.. anyone else?

Seems to me, you don't get nuttin' for nuttin' in this world. Everything is tradeoff. The Sol Ark has low idle draw, easy to setup(!) integrated mppts, etc. The Schneider also has low idle, but you need a separate charge controller, extra monitoring hardware, and a more complex setup. I...
  • Post in thread: I really like the new powerpro battery..

Sure. Will has to review it on YT first, though.
  • Post in thread: Signature Solar EG4 6.5K Off-Grid Inverter | 6500EX-48

The last item - warranty parts based in Texas is the most significant. You'll sell tons of these.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark's Comment on EG4 18k-PV-12-LV

This all reminds me of tractor sales. People want the Kubota or Deere, but buy the Kioti because it's "just as good" and has "the same features", then regret buying the Kioti every time they use it... (I bought two Kubota M8's, just for reference, haha)
  • Post in thread: Anyone experimented with boosting solar panel output with a mirrored surface?

My solar array is on a hill overlooking a meadow. In winter, the combination of snow and cold dramatically increases output of my panels. Unfortunately it’s not nearly compensating for the much shorter days..
  • Post in thread: My Best cabin purchase ..

I have an off grid cabin in Northern NH in the mountains that i visit a lot, but leave unheated. I redesigned the plumbing several years ago to plumb a drain back valve and a small compressor to blow out the lines when I left in winter months, Although this ok, small amount residual water...
  • Post in thread: Kohler 48volt DC Generator

I love it! I only use it in winter, but when I need it it charges my battery bank like nothing else can. Its way more efficient than my gas generators (inverter), and a lot simpler than my big diesel back up (that I am probably selling). It’s a niche product, for sure. I’m sure they don’t sell...
  • Post in thread: Solar for poor people?

So the Federal government subsidies solar for lower income so the utility companies can lower buyback rates.... Is this how it works?
  • Post in thread: Door to door sales people

I had one of these guys give me a 'quote' (that's being generous with what I received) for $90,000. I asked him to break it down of the costs and he said he wouldn't without a contract. Because I live in a neighborhood of multi-million dollar homes, I'm sure they just index their quotes against...
  • Post in thread: 48 volt LED strip lights

I got these 48 volt strip lights connected directly to my server rack batteries. It works great. I’m using a remote control 48 volt switch I got off amazon. This is in my power house with the inverter and battery bank. These lights draw almost nothing in current, and are extremely bright. It was...

  • Post in thread: Add Heating Pads to EG4 or Switching to Trophy Batteries?

I have had 6 Trophies for a year and a half and through 1 pretty cold winter (-20F a few times) in an unheated shed. I did make a small closet for the batteries out of several layers of insulation foam. I used a 200watt heater connected to an wireless inkbird and a small 48volt DC fan. I set...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark no longer supporting gen shave

This site sure does seem to be an SS marketing platform
  • Post in thread: Why is solar so damn difficult?

Its all the level of abstraction you understand a system/subject at. I’m a moron and completely designed and installed my system. It’s been flawless for two years.
  • Post in thread: Maine Inspectors

I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t either. This why an important part of the DIY solar planning process is befriending a local electrician. …
