  • Post in thread: 6 hours to get 2 x EG4-LifePower4 to talk to Solar-Assistant via RS485 to USB.

So I recently got my setup all working. Here are some details I didn't find anywhere but figured out (after days of fighting). RS485 is like a building full of people (16 max in our case) and someone on stage. The person on the stage yells out "john how old are you" and if there is more than...
  • Post in thread: Spare Growatt as charger

I finally got around to rewiring and I am very pleased with result. I am pushing 80a to the batteries and the generator is at 31% load. It's charging the batteries at around 15% per hour. I will just run it one hour. It's a cloudy day and the generator hasn't been run for a few months so...
  • Post in thread: Battery drain with sun

Chatting with my wife and made me think that maybe it's the inverter with no input that is causing the drain. It's providing 1/3 of the house power but has no source other than battery. The other 2 are generating exactly what they need but not making up for the 3rd. If this is the case I...
  • Post in thread: Spare Growatt as charger

I am mostly off-grid. Cloudy days or wife cooking a roast in the evening will run my batteries dead at night. Most days zero grid used but sometimes up to 10kw used. I am pushing 18-20kw a day thru grid-tie so I bank way more than im using. Sadly they pay much less than they charge so its...
  • Post in thread: Maximum charge current in parallel

Good to know. The spec sheet says max 100a charge/discharge and 30a recommended discharge but I didn't see a recommended charge. How much would suspect I would shorten the life of the batteries if I went with 30a (0.3c). Going from 15a to 30a will make all the difference in getting them...
  • Post in thread: Maximum charge current in parallel

I just checked the manual. I had previously used the spec sheet. Believe it or not they recommend 100a continuous for charging but 30a for discharge. I think that's a bit much. I upped my charging from 20a each inverter (4) to 32a/inv which would be 21a per battery. I want to leave a little...
  • Post in thread: Maximum charge current in parallel

I have a decent size system. I have 6 x EG4 batteries and 21kw panels. I called SS and they said that even though the batteries are parallel they still suggest sending no more than 80amp into the batteries. Is that accurate? When I look at the batteries in BMS_Tool it shows that each are...
  • Post in thread: Spare Growatt as charger

That's the max the growatt is able to do or I'd kick it up more. I'd love to push 150a to the batteries but I can't go and buy more chargers or a bigger one. Thanks for the input.
  • Post in thread: Series VS Parallel Power Difference

I want to throw out a big thanks to you Hedges. I reduced the sting to 10 panels temporarily while I order more wire. I am not looking forward to running the wire. I have a low pitched roof and I'm 6'7" and overweight so it's a long painful trip to the other side of the house. It's ok...
  • Post in thread: Solar charging

I am very new to solar but have read volumes. I did search the forums for the answer but maybe I'm not using the right search terms. Here goes... I am soon to have my new system installed. Plan is 4x growatt 5k in parallel with 22kw panels and 6x eg4 batteries. Four inverters are overkill...
  • Post in thread: power supply

It might be easier to change your thinking about what the power supply is doing. It's a limiter. It limits to what you set it at. Current is a function of the load and voltage. The knobs set the upper limit of what can be output. That's why you set the voltage (limit) with leads connected...
  • Post in thread: Charging clarification

WOW. Clean and concise answers with bonus details. Thank you so much. The batteries are 6x 100A 48V EG4. The reason for 4 units is that 3 would easily cover everything but house faces east/west and want to optimize the panels as much as possible. Inverters are cheaper than more panels...
  • Post in thread: Series VS Parallel Power Difference

Hedges, I think I get it now. Because I changed them from parallel to series I raised the voltage and dropped the amps so the single input can now handle the full output of the panels. So 12.5a @ 275v (typical) I get capped at 3437.5w which is right where I was at. Makes total sense. Because...
  • Post in thread: Series VS Parallel Power Difference

I dont mind getting ON the roof. It's the crawling in the attic that I don't like. It's maybe 3 ft tall at the peak and filled with ductwork. I hadn't thought about pvc fumes. I'll see how much rigid costs too. No inspector here to reject it but I do want it safe.
  • Post in thread: EG4 18kpv questions

I am familiar with grid-tie and off-grid. I have both. I am trying to decide if a 18kpv would be a good choice as a replacement. What I have works but is very complex setup. If something happened to me, my wife could never run it. Can the 18kpv work as a whole home UPS. I feel confident...
  • Post in thread: Charging clarification

I haven't bought any of it yet but very close. Working with installer. Its not an AiO system. I designed it from the ground up with very little knowledge. The 5T heat pump can do heat but I always use it in "emergency mode" so it uses natural gas rather than electric. I don't like the idea...
  • Post in thread: Charging clarification

I plan to hook 4x Growatt 5000 in parallel. The question I can't seem to find an answer for is this. If the inverter has a MPPT charger that can charge at 100A and I am stacking them, am I stacking the charge ability as well or will one unit do all the charging? If one unit does the charging...
  • Post in thread: Solar charging

I planned on 3 inverters but I wouldnt be able to split the panels evenly so I went with 4. If it works out in the future I will just disable one and keep it as a spare/backup. My house pulls 5kw on the average day when the AC is running. To cover AC/Oven/Microwave or any other combined load...
  • Post in thread: Battery drain with sun

I have 3x ES5000 and 30k EG4 batteries. I have fine tuned everything to my liking over a year. The last thing that bugs me that I haven't found a solution for is battery drain with full sun. On a sunny day my batteries are full by 1-2pm. Lots of sun left. The moment they hit 100% it...
  • Post in thread: Series VS Parallel Power Difference

I have 12x 445w panels. I have been running them in series/parallel (6x2) connected to grid tie inverter (Growatt 6kW Grid-Tie Inverter | MIN 6000TL-X). They are facing south at 28 degrees tilt which is the "ideal" fixed angle for my location. I have been unhappy with my production since I...
  • Post in thread: Spare Growatt as charger

I have an extra Growatt 5000es. I have a large generator that is not connected since I converted to solar. I am trying to think of a good way to have the generator available as a last resort. My idea is to configure the spare inverter as 80a grid charging with zero solar charging. Not...
  • Post in thread: Charging clarification

LRA = 117 RLA = 21.8 FLA = 0.86 I'd love to change the HVAC but that's another very large bill. Can't replace a working unit. I think 5 ton is a little oversized anyway. It cycle on time is usually 6-8 minutes. Would it help to install a spp6 hard start kit? Basically if I build to code I...
  • Post in thread: 160 amp wiring

The cables are the same length from each inverter to the battery cabinet busbar and all the cables from the batteries to the battery cabinet busbar are the same length. The inverters are using their own #2 to the busbar and all 4 inverters are connected to the top of the bus bar within 1 inch...
  • Post in thread: 160 amp wiring

I agree and was looking for a second opinion. If I am buying a new 2/0 set of cables I am thinking I should add 2 busbars because the inverters hook directly to the battery busbars currently. I found an online cable supplier that will cut to length and add the crimps and heatshrink for me...
  • Post in thread: Battery drain with sun

Would raising the float voltage a tiny bit help hold the charge up while solar is available or is this just normal? Would I do adding undo wear on the batteries. https://1drv.ms/i/s!Ag2sPxMETgThjbcyr2vhXcHhKau6mA https://1drv.ms/i/s!Ag2sPxMETgThjbczqMBz7s1_GInlXw
  • Post in thread: 160 amp wiring

I have done some searches and found a LOT of information but I'm having trouble zeroing in on one definitive answer. Forgive me if this has been answered 1000 times. I have 6 x EG4 (48v 100AH) batteries connected to 4 x 5000es inverters. I am pushing 160 amps to the batteries when charging...
  • Post in thread: Battery drain with sun

If the es5000 detects that the batteries are at 100% is it designed to disable charging until the lower charge limit (set to 30% by me) is hit before doing any charging again?
  • Post in thread: Battery drain with sun

There is PLENTY of solar. It's just that the inverters stop charging once the batteries are full and allow the batteries to start discharging. I typically have 7-9kw of available solar when batteries hit full but they start discharging. I will try increasing the float to see if that helps...
  • Post in thread: Spare Growatt as charger

My generator is large and can handle much more load than I am applying to it. I have been playing with the bulk charge. I have it set to 55.5v. I chose that because its below the spec on the batteries. I try to stay on the safe side. These settings charge the batteries at 14A each (0.14C)
  • Post in thread: Series VS Parallel Power Difference

I know I threw a lot of info there. I have 3 off-grid inverters, each on 6x2 strings running the house. I have one grid-tie with 12 panels discussed above. I did that because my batteries were filling to quickly and I was throwing away potential so I shut down one of the 4 off-grids and...
