  • Post in thread: Ecoflow River Pro 2 vs 20 year old pellet stove fireplace insert

THIS WAS JUST AN EXPERIMENT AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN EMERGENCY. (and if you saw this in the Cold Temperature Systems subforum, yes this is the same thread - sorry) Just a quick real world experiment. I purchased an Ecoflow River 2 Pro last summer for some...
  • Post in thread: Does anybody here think 12 volt is the way to go for flexibility?

Counter point: Of the 5 brands of off the shelf 12v and 24v batteries that I looked at when buying my first large battery, ALL of them were shown by their manufacturer to be able to be safely wired in series up to 48v. I know some aren't, but it is looking like most these days are. I'm not...

Naomi Brockwell on the Tubes (https://www.youtube.com/@NaomiBrockwellTV) does a pretty good job of translating security concepts from full on geek speak to simple straight forward concepts. I sometimes have my staff watch her videos. You are already off to a good start by NOT connecting...
  • Post in thread: What are you doing to save energy?

For reference, I am in Arkansas with high humidity year round. "Sauna" is the word I would use for summer. However, I am all electric at my house and the last two years, February has been my highest electric bill. Bought this house in 2018 and done the following: Lighting: All LED lighting...
  • Post in thread: Insulation roof of cabin

Watch the flame at the base - it should be blue as with ANY GAS APPLIANCE. (The ceramic heaters above the flame act as a catalyst ensure complete combustion and it's ok if they glow steady orange - more below.) If the flame is blue it is getting plenty of O2. If the flame itself is burning...
  • Post in thread: Insulation roof of cabin

Thank you. I live in Arkansas (hot and humid summers, cold and humid winters) and had to learn a lot when I designed our data center at work. It's a 15x15 room and I have to displace a potential of 10kw of heat energy. I also bought a house with a 20x40 shop 5 years ago and planned to make a...
  • Post in thread: Dielectric grease with LFP anyone?

So here is what I have learned from the links in this discussion and further research into the products: 1) NO-OX-ID is a contact enhancer(?) that is designed to penetrate the layer of Aluminum Oxide that forms rapidly on any aluminum surface. It's best use case is BETWEEN contact points as...
  • Post in thread: Old Battery Switches.. do they stay in a new build ?

One more vote Start Over. That said, if you take it all apart and THOROUGHLY clean components you might keep some for spares. Some older components were better built than some of the modern ones (or at least had better quality control). I assume from your greeting that this is on the ocean...
  • Post in thread: Insulation roof of cabin

Ditto! I grew up in and around homes that used these heaters, most built before 1960. In a pooly insulated and drafty house, there is actually a fairly constant supply of fresh air to feed these and keep the flame blue (if the flame is turning orange it is not getting enough oxygen). I still...
  • Post in thread: Low-budget Project Thread: 23' sailboat with 24v trolling motor and 12v systems / 24v Shed with solar charging.

    Latest Trip with 4 adults (total boat weight above 3600lbs with crew and gear) Battery capacity: According the manual for the iPowerQueen 25.6v 100Ah LFP battery, capacity is as follows - 27.0V - 100% 26.8V - 99% 26.6V - 90% 26.4V - 70% 26.2V - 40% 26.0V...
  • Post in thread: Is 240v really necessary?

Oooh, yeah, I can see now where that would definitely be a factor. I was thinking about the inverter loss going from DC to AC and wasn't really thinking about it being a DEEP well (went back and reread the original post).
  • Post in thread: Solar neuro-toxic meme

Dead birds around chemical processing facilities is not uncommon. Concentrates of most elements can be toxic. Chemicals to purify or process most materials are toxic. Burning things, even in nature, is toxic (walk next to a fire of poison ivy or poison oak and see how far you get). If a...
  • Post in thread: A Tentative Plan for This Old Boat...

"Build Quality" seems to be a thing of the past. And there are very few brands (of anything) that try to maintain more than an 'image" of quality. Some of these Chinese "brands" are laughable, but we keep buying their crap, so I guess they are having the last laugh. :(
  • Post in thread: What are you doing to save energy?

Their 220v kettles seem to take about half the time to boil as our 110v kettles for some reason....;)
  • Post in thread: New electric system on sailboat

If you only run the appliances one at a time, and run the fridge straight to the battery bank, *I* would think you can go down to a good 2000W inverter. Heat your water, then run the microwave, then run the AC before bed. Do all this and don't plan any week long trips off shore to begin with...
  • Post in thread: Two banks in one rack?

💡💡💡Proportional💡💡💡 Thanks @42OhmsPA @Steve_S @Brett V and @Brucey - the fog is lifting and this clears up the gap in my understanding that was giving me trouble in planning my own configuration for my shop. (I hope this discussion is helping @Stotts47 as its helping me.)
  • Post in thread: Insulation roof of cabin

I have a fireplace insert pellet stove that is thermostatically controlled. It acts a supplement system to my homes central system and this year I should be able to power it during outages as it has less than a 1Kwt draw during ignition and then drops to around 300wt to run the blower. I'll...
  • Post in thread: Is such a thing as off grid internet possible?

Bravo. Ok, I read through and have gotten an idea of what you are getting at. My background affecting my perspective: I'm a 30+ year computer geek by trade. I'm in the world of "healthcare" for the last 20 years. My first exposure to the internet was on mainframes in the 80s in...
  • Post in thread: Dielectric grease with LFP anyone?

The reason I would want it is concern over 1)dissimilar metals at the terminals exposed to 2)moisture and 3)temperature fluctuation during use. With lead, this is always a corrosion magnet (although I always thought "acid-creep" from the electrolyte was a contributing factor that LFP doesn't...
  • Post in thread: Ecoflow River Pro 2 vs 20 year old pellet stove fireplace insert

I think that's the key takeaway: this is an all metal unit that is twenty years old now. If I had a way to frankenstien it with some cheap honeywell fans and ducts, it would definitely save power (light plastic fans are about 35w on full which is about the same volume of flow as this unit on...

  • Post in thread: Advice for taking historic mansion in the country completely off grid

As a computer geek whose tries to DIY everything in my house for the last 30 years, can I through out a few ideas? (this is getting outside of the solar, but relates. All suggestestions are based soley on what's been mentioned in this thread and should be evaluated against the millions of...
  • Post in thread: Low-budget Project Thread: 23' sailboat with 24v trolling motor and 12v systems / 24v Shed with solar charging.

Sorry I don't have any good close ups of the full setup yet. The first is a picture of the boat as of last week. (Need to replace the forward hatch and the side windows next spring.) The second picture is a closeup of the motor attached in the down position. If you follow the cord you can...
  • Post in thread: Spam Attacks

Every one I am aware of was that way. Even our not so high profile cases locally were traced back to that. I make sure I talk to every staff member weekly and they know MY name and that I don't call myself by some title. That's hard in big corporations. Thankfully we are under 200
  • Post in thread: Can an 800 sq. ft. Cabin be Cooled with One Window AC Unit?

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would share my experience (draw your own conclusions and adjust for your climate/conditions): Building: 20x40 Red Metal roof and Tan Metal Walls on 2x4 wood stud frame Foundation: concrete slab Insulation: Roof and eves are spray foam, walls are...
  • Post in thread: Seeking Houseboat Off Grid Solar System design

Looking at the logistics of fitting it, I'm wondering about that too. Most of the panels I've looked at are between 16-22wt per SqFt. so if you have a 75x18 boat that's a 1350SqFt rectangle. If you can cover 75% as a combination upper canopy and using the front deck cover, that gives you...
  • Post in thread: Need a 10U or 12U rack for Signature Solar batteries

Coming from IT myself, look for the term 48U CABINET when you are shopping. They make 48U cable management racks that only have front posts (something like this would be great for up to less than 4 batteries) but they are made with lighter stamped steel or aluminum posts. You will want at...
  • Post in thread: Favorite LifePo4 for 12v 800-1000AH BANK - Full Electrical Refit - 48' HC Sailboat

If you are gutting an rebuilding everything, I would consider going 24v and a few strategically placed 24v to 12v step downs. To me the pros out weigh the cons, especially if you are starting from scratch.
  • Post in thread: High End Audio powered by Solar vs Grid

That is a good point. As to weight, I always found that when it came to stereo components, the heavier the better. I'm not saying making it heavy makes it better, but better sounding equipment always seemed to be pretty beefy, with few exceptions.

Thank you! I found the 350A unit you mentioned.
