where to buy mini split, besides amazon&ebay

I've bought all my mini-splits from ingrams water and air including my whole home unit
yeah, I got my Mr Cool unts from them too, a number of years ago. I bought the 120v units so that I could "more easily" power them later with batteries, as at the time 240v 'inverters' systems weren't really around. But I'm still happy with them and they have been humming along great for the last 4 years.

They even have a 240v version for the 9k now. My home is quite small and 9k was more than enough for the rooms I wanted conditioned and the heating is the best part.

The heating cycle requires a massive amount of compressor superheat cycles compared to the cooling cycle due to the significant temp differences.

Not a lot of heat outside to move in.
So, on that note, If I want to add a mini-split for rare occasional summer use when temps get above 85 in the WNC mountains but primarily for keeping the house from freezing in the winter. Placing it on the south end of the house would probably be the most beneficial?

Yes with a dark background even better although these do move some air.

Anything that can be done to increase the air temp moving across the outside coil gains efficiency. Even ground tubes that carry air underground (poor man's geothermal) before it goes thru the outside coil helps.

The higher the delta T between outside temps and coil temp, the more heat energy the coil can absorb. This is why efficiency is better in summer when cooling, the delta T between the inside coil and the temp of the air in the room is much higher. Heat moves to cold. In winter, the delta T is lower, thus less heat energy will be absorbed.
