External BMS or a battery protector?

If you have Li type batteries of any kind, an internal BMS that monitors individual cell voltages as well as battery current and temperature is not optional, its a necessity not only for proper performance and longevity but more importantly safety.

I have EPCOM Lifepo 4 batteries 12.8 volts 100ah. I inquired to the company and they said there was no internal bms. I have read that it is mandated that all lifepo4 batteries (lithium) had to have bms.
No I can't get to the individual cells.

I assume you are putting 4 in series to get 48v. I suppose a bms to keep 4 12v batteries in balance is better than nothing. Don't know anything about bms that balances 12v batteries.

If this is what you bought, no you probably don’t need another BMS but I couldn’t find anything specifically stating you can place them in series. It says they’re only good for 20 amps discharge so even with two in parallel, I hope you don’t plan on any moderate loads. IMG_7659.jpeg

The specification suggests a BMS is installed in the battery. I cannot see that a company would sell a lithium battery without a BMS.

Example of battery balancer,
Example of shunt, ( BMV 712 has programmable relay for SOC / voltage )
Example of battery low volt protection,
