Charge Controller Placement on Shunt

I have a question about the victron smart shunt and proper placement of charge controller negative battery wire. According to the diagrams it says proper connection to the shunt is only a single negative wire goes from shunt to battery and all negative load/charge wires go to the other side of the shunt. What confuses me is if I'm wanting to know what my total usage is and to properly measure, it must pass through the shunt, then how does it determine the amount used by the power that comes directly from the charge controller?

then how does it determine the amount used by the power that comes directly from the charge controller?
If it does not go thru the shunt, the shunt does not keep track of it (how would it?).

In general, powering things from the charge controller is not the best idea. The power ratings
from a SCC are generally fairly light. And why would you want to make your expensive SCC work hard doing something that a battery is made to do effortlessly?

What I mean is that my inverter negative, SCC battery negative, and negative for all other devices are connected to the same bus bar that connects to the load side of the shunt. If it measures consumption based on what passes through the shunt then is there not a a variance not being measured because of the connection between the SCC negative being in direct contact with the load negatives?

Correct but a shunt is not designed to measure consumption in that scenario. In that scenario, the shunt measures battery charge inflow and outflow to give you a measure of the state of charge.

So what device would I use that would give me accurate measurements of the consumption and ah being completely pulled from my batteries, including the power pulled from the incoming charge of the charge controller?
