EG4 18kPV Q+A general thread

Ok thanks. That clears it up a little.
There’s always power going thru the power lines when the grid is sending power to homes. When the grids down the lineman need to know there isn’t generators or solar setups) from homes backfeeding into the power lines making the lines hot when they shouldn’t be. This is why all grid tie inverters have Anti islanding

What settings am I missing to make sure it constantly uses the battery right now it seems to alternate between battery and grid. I can’t seem to figure out what triggers it maybe when pv drops down. Currently has about a 5k load and pulling 4.8 from grid did this earlier but next time I checked was pulling all from battery.

Which firmware version do you have installed?

Am I missing something here? Wouldn’t any backfeed to the utility create a hazard to the linemen working on the line? If that’s the case, I can’t see any backfeed as acceptable. Am I seeing this wrong?
No, you are thinking anti-islanding. Not backfeed. That feature should work just fine.

Hope we can get an answer to this. Being I have the same problem I don’t have an answer for you, except maybe check your discharge amps from your battery. Make sure it’s set high enough. And your not getting voltage drop.

Can you share you settings and photos of the LCD screen(s)?

My discharge is set at 250 shortly after that it was pulling 10kw from the batteries then about an hour later after pv was done it went back to grid and never again pulled from battery I went out and killed grid breaker and made it discharge till midnight to get it down for charging back today. I am having dongle issues and cant remote monitor but judging by SA still hooked to the batteries and emporia showing grid with pv input its working right currently but I haven't changed anything . Ty gave me some settings to lower on charge settings an to match my bulk and absorb plan to try them tonight. I am currently running open loop till I take time to update firmware on my lifepower4 batteries.

I am going to replace a SolarEdge SE5000H with the EG4 18K. I currently have SolarEdge Power Optimizers (P300-5NC4ARS) on each of my 16 panels. Will these power optimizers work with the 18K or should I remove them and wire directly to the PV inputs. Panels are only 285 watt Suniva, so currently not a lot of power but will replace or add in the future.
Thanks,
David

I'm not super familiar with the ins and outs of SolarEdge power optimizers, but from what I've heard there are a number of them that only work properly with SE inverters and require an additional device to be unlocked for use with non-SE inverters. If that's the case, you won't be able to wire them directly to the 18kPV. The transmitter built in works on SunSpec protocol, for RSD systems such as APSmart and Tigo, I believe SE may be some proprietary communication.

You could AC couple like Quattro mentioned, but if you're wanting to be able to dark start dead batteries without grid power then having at least some DC coupled solar is helpful. Depends on how long you plan on keeping your existing solar before upgrading.

The optimizers I have are long obsolete so I should probably remove them. Do I need anything in between the PV panels and the 18K?
If I can't wire them direct them maybe the Tigo but I'll have a look at the APSmart or whatever other SunSpec compatible.
Thanks!

You either going to have to replace that se5000, there's plenty of them about or swap out the solaredge optimizers with Tigo's or such like.
Of course if you're not pulling a permit and have no concerns in that area then you could just get rid of the solaredge optimizers and wire your panels right into the 18K

Im curious if it allows you to change your charge setting. Im having Same dongle issue. It wont connect to the inv.

When you killed grid did it automatically switch over to batt?

No I couldn’t get it to change charge settings. It ended up being my cut off setting being too high as soon as i dropped it it started using the battery again. Yes it automatically switched to battery with no grid. I just updated the firmware on my batteries and switched to closed loop now thou so will see how it does with the soc percentages tomorrow.

You don't need anything between your solar and the 18kPV's MPPTs to work, just as long as your PV strings are series'd to a high enough voltage to start the MPPT. Depending on where your panels are mounted, you may need MLPEs for 690.12 compliance but that's where the transmitter can help make things plug and play if compatible.
