That's an idea as my bench power supply only goes to 5 amps. I think it is spring outside...
I can temporarily hook it up to my truck battery and just put the house test battery on the ground.
Hi Guys,
I just picked up a new-looking used local Renogy 60 amp DC/DC Charger (none of my friends said I shouldn't :) ) and I would like to bench test it.
I have a large HP bench power supply with adjustable volts and amps. Cables, meters, and a lead acid flooded battery. My thinking was to...
You do have a smart alternator controlled by the ECU. Many of the Silverados do have voltage sensing on the negative ground battery cable. It is a red plastic box around the cable.
Not looking to have such problems I am installing a second alternator on my Silverado to keep all the house...
Wiley,
Kind of in the same place as you are. Picked up my first e-bike Hyper (Walmart special, 36 volt 7.8AH) at a police sale $150 (I need to go to Goodwill more). The battery is dead and locked in.
I was thinking about going the same way as you were thinking by making a better battery, but...
I would still add a temperature gauge on the alternator as you also need to remember modern cars and trucks use a lot of power with heated everything and lots of electronics running. A $10 gauge is a lot less than a $200 alternator. With that in mind think about a switch to turn off house...
Yes, that is very sad. The true point of recycling is to reuse the things not melt them down. Most of the old Craftsman tools are good. I have an early contractor's Craftsman table saw for sale now ($225) that weighs 1.5 times the weight of a new cabinet table saw.
I sell mostly to new...
I always say that old saw will still be cutting wood when the new China saws have been melted down ten times.
I also say it has to be older than me to be old...
Yes as said above, the limiting factor will most likely be your alternator.
This is what I am going to use on my 2009 2500HD.

I am adding a second alternator to just charge my house battery. I will then have control of the amps and the...
Great read.
Thank you for the link. I am a bit confused about the custom programming but I will figure it out.
Thanks for all the help guys, ordering one.
I have been reading and watching the videos on the Victron IP22 and I see why you recommend it.
I see what looks like a mode button on the front panel. Is this what you press to change from a flooded to a different type of battery?
I was hoping to find something like this.

Welcome
Up north by Lake Erie, we often have clouds this time of year with the cold lake water. I will be driving a bit west to get in the center line.
Schools closed, government offices closed, mayors are saying to stay home...BIG DEAL.
Hello All,
Looking for a smart battery charger 12 volt. 20 Amp or (??)
I have:
Lead acid - motorcycle to Ford backhoe
AMG - cars and trucks
Gel - small to medium (UPS)
Lithium - eBike to 100AH in camper
I have read a review once here, but I can not find it, that talked about good ones around...
From what I have read some of the external programable regulators, like WAKESPEED, have alternator temperature probes to reduce amps when temps reach limits. They are not inexpensive.
I am working on temp controls for the second alternator on my truck.
Whatever you have on (light, fan) and hooked to a battery will run from the battery's power. The battery can be charged for your alternator or solar. From shore power, you can just plug in a battery charger.
I will be doing the same thing with this device.
DC to DC charger
I did read it in the manual. Just send them an email. They have very good customer service.
But I do agree with Dave in AZ, you are building a very big mouse trap for a very small mouse.
I have a much bigger "house mouse" in my camper.
This is the DC to DC charger I am looking at for my slide-in truck camper build.

When the motor is running it will charge the house battery from the vehicle battery system.
When the motor is off it will charge from solar. It will charge both house and vehicle...
Think about keeping everything 12 VDC. I have a 19" 12VDC TV (I have a 10' screen in my theatre at home) and it looks just fine. It also has a DVD player built in. Axess $125 on sale.
Your laptop is taking 110 AC down to a lower DC voltage to run and charge. Just get the 12 VDC adapter.
Great Post
I drive an 09 Silverado 2500HD 6.0L gas truck.
I am working on adding a second smart alternator (125 amp) to just charge my house batteries.
You can get to needing 175 amps when driving with everything on. Everything is heated now a days.
Half the rated amps are what they will...
I have been living all my years looking north across Lake Erie so this fall I will be driving my little truck camper around the lake to test it out. Look for me on the side of the road... :)
Yes, you will need an AGM battery on the alternator side to power the alternator up as it does not have any fixed magnets in it like a generator would. The battery will also act as a large filter and clean up the power going to the CD/CD charger.
I would think that the DC/DC charger would not care too much how it gets the 12-17 volts as it will change the input voltage to what it needs up to the max amps it is designed for to charge your batteries.
1. Bring the older videos up to date with comments to start them off. New people, like myself, start with the old videos. What was GREAT then may not be now.
2. I would like to see your take on using an old C-band satellite dish with panels on it to track the sun across the sky.
Thank you for all the great information.
I have done some research on these modules and they seem to have very little use. I probably have 500 of them. So what do I do with them? Does not look like there is an easy way to charge them.
Any ideas?
No I don't want to buy a Pruis... :)
Ok, I ripped apart (very carefully) one of my bus batteries. It has 6 banks, each holding 40 of these cells. If they are around 3 volts (the cell has no voltage) it would be 120 volts. With the 6 packs, it could make three phases of 240 volts. The bus is three phase. Just guessing.
Want to...
Just last week I was working in a nationally known manufacturer's plant that was putting together 4 one inch braided-looking copper cables into a large 4-inch connector. The overhead crane held one end of this 10-foot-long cable above the connector as the worker soldered the connector to the...
No, I have not broken apart the pack to see what they look like. That looks to be a big job.
The spanner is resting on top of the plastic tubes to give a point of perspective in the photo. It is back in the toolbox where it belongs. :)
Hi Guys,
I have acquired a collection of batteries over the last year. Some early Purus car batteries. From what I have read somewhat useless. But two LARGE EV Buss batteries. Looking for more information on the cells to see if I should build them into something or sell them.
I searched on all...
