I have a sma sunny island 8.0H system and would like to upgrade batteries from lead acid to Li-Ion. Please could someone help me to understand the configuration of the SI 8.0H system for the batteries. It is not clear to me how the SI is configured for a managed battery.
I am looking to integrate fogstar batteries (45kWh) and I am not sure whether the SI will work with the BMS or determine SoC separately.

Never heard of fogstar but you’ll need to check their manual to see whether they will work. SMA are notoriously difficult to work with for li-ion.

I have done same but with earlier SI5048, even used cells from Fogstar but for a DIY battery not ready made

The 8.0H has the lithium mode so it's down to the BMS the Fogstar battery has, if it does canbus and Pylontech is one of the protocols it should work and then run as closed loop where the SI takes the BMS info and follows its orders.
