I get that Bigger Is Better, but what if I wanted to build a small (10AH?) LFP battery (12V? Expandable to 48v?) just to get my feet wet without breaking the bank? I don't actually have a _need_ for such a thing, but this forum isn't about need, is it? 8*)

I keep seeing stuff like:

and thinking "I could do that!", but there are all the details:
Are there BMS systems that are programmable for variable numbers of cells? Can I buy a 48V (16s) BMS and use it for a 12V (4s) pack? Are the above batteries and BMS any good, or are there other options?

What would you choose if you wanted to build a "science fair project"?

Thanks!

Increasing voltage usually means dumping the equipment you have. Best to pick a voltage, and stick with it.

A 12v 10ah battery would run a 100 watt lightbulb for 1 hour. The small battery packs in your link are NOT upgradable to a home, or even RV, system.

This is the smallest battery I would bother building:
16 for a 48v system.

You could start with a 24v system with 8 batteries. Get a 8-17, or 8-24 BMS (can handle as few as 8 batteries, or as many as 17 to 24, depending upon the model). Then you add more cells to bring it up to 48v.
