  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

For those of you saying off grid testing isn't really what needs to be seen.... once you compare the performance of some of the better known AIO units during a grid down scenario to a comparable or even smaller off grid unit, you begin to realize that in extended grid outage scenarios there...
  • Post in thread: 4 X class solar flares to impact this weekend.

This one was one of my favorite pics from last night. It has the moon and my solar panels in it. ☺️

They do? The only times that I have seen an inverter overcharge a battery was when the settings were made incorrectly on install..... That would then be installer error. But maybe I haven't worked with enough bottom of the barrel cheap inverters...?? If the battery gives a charge target voltage...

One more note.... Just to make sure that you are aware of this. BMSs are not there to keep inverters from overcharging batteries..... Their whole purpose is to "keep an eye on" the individual cells and shut down the whole battery if there is a cell overvoltage, overtemp, battery overcurrent...
  • Post in thread: Live Ground Shocked 5 Year Old

Challenge accepted. :) I'll use a transformer connected as auto-transformer. I will need to do this tomorrow, as I'm out of time today. I'll report back with results and pictures of clamp meter(s). I will also make a diagram of exactly how I wire it up, to make sure we are all clear on the...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

The XW6048 was actually originally branded "Xantrex". In fact the Schneider SCP that was in use up until very recently (And actually is still available here and there, for instance we still have about 100 in stock yet. 😁) was originally Xantrex branded as well. Here are pictures showing the...
  • Post in thread: Auto-transformer L1/N/L2 current

Today I got around to doing this test. I am happy to say that I was wrong and @Hedges was right. (I suspected this after thinking things through.) I got quite a few pictures and funny enough, this test fit in very well with some testing that I needed to do anyway for another project! I'll try...

Electric stove and electric water heater together will likely nearly max out 12kW of inverter. That's without anything else running. Heat pump dryer and washer, plus will pump will soon add around 2kW yet. Grundfos well pump alone will be between 600-1500w depending on which specific model you...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark SOC tracking issues

Sol-Ark's SOC tracking algorithm runs off and jumps around! And so far I have gotten no satisfactory response from them on any solution! The scenario is that we have quite a few Sol-Ark's out there with LifePo4 batteries that have no closed loop comms, but with shunt based SOC screen built-into...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark no longer supporting gen shave

Yes, that works. In fact the Chargeverter is a quite impressive product, too your credit! 🙂 However, I feel that a customer shouldn't have to buy an additional item for lack of a feature not working on a "premium product".

Looks like about 6 inches higher than the Sol-Ark 15K.

SCP still works. Even with the latest XW Pro. However, it had (has?) been discontinued. My understanding is that there is still a xantrex scp available for their "mobile" series of inverters..?? And it supposedly works with the white schneider inverters. But it is black. We had gotten a few...
  • Post in thread: I'm the luckiest boy in the world!

Here are 2 great examples of overproduction from my 5.4kw (DC) ground mounted array. (These are bi-facial...) Not sure what the temps were on 1/14/2024.... but the peak that day was 6.13kW. This last one was today, with temps in the upper 40F most of the day. Currently 51F, at 4:21 P.M...
  • Post in thread: Split wire circuit with conext xw plus inverter

XW+ 5548 is full 120/240 split phase inverter, so yes that works. (I have set up outlets in this way, powered from XWs many times!) Just be sure to use a 2 pole breaker for those 2 hot legs to make sure nobody ever moves the breakers to where they both are on the same leg! Then you could very...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

It is currently being used (beta versions) by a few/some people. For instance @HighTechLab would be one of the "lucky" ones. I know of another local dealer that has a unit as well, where I know the guys very well personally. Just yesterday I saw their unit again and I asked if they have gotten...
  • Post in thread: AGS - Auto Generator Start Information Thread

We install quite a bit of the Kohler 14RCA units for off-grid backup. They run on NG or LP and for the price point, they have done quite well! We generally see between 4,000-6,000 hours out of them, and while that is not all that high hours, it is actually quite acceptable considering the going...
  • Post in thread: Desulfation of flooded lead acid batteries with just a DC power supply.

We have been using this method for 13+ years with off-grid lead acid battery setups. In fact many manufacturers recommend equalize voltages in the range you are talking about. We have always told our customers to equalize once per month (that way it happens every 2-3 months.) and the proper way...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Like I mentioned, the BMS should never give a value (charge, discharge, voltage, etc.) to the inverter that can cause overtemp in the first place. All parameters that the BMS communicates to the inverter should be within range of what the batteries can EASILY handle! There is no reason...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Thanks for that info @HighTechLab 👍
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

Anyone from Midnite have a good explanation on this 5 minute delay on startup? I have noticed this on some other AIOs and it kinda bugs me. I'm used to the traditional way, where you either hit a switch or change the mode to "enabled" in the menu and "BAM", the inverter turns on. I'm pretty...
  • Post in thread: I'm the luckiest boy in the world!

I have 5.4 kw of HT 450 watt bi-facial panels. (12 panels) And I quite regularly see overproduction. Here is a picture of my Fronius data, but just remember these numbers were probably short edge of cloud effect bursts, but still.... Again. This is with 12x 450W bi-facial panels ground...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

And having Midnite behind it goes a long way too! Another plus will be that the included CT sensors will be able to measure at least what the passthrough rating is.... I haven't heard any bigger promises, but that is more that what the Sol-Ark 15K does.... (15K Sol-Ark with 200A transfer relay...
  • Post in thread: Why is minimum battery temp charging well below self heating temp activation?

Wouldn't these specs seem to infer that the heater kicks in at 32° (ambient) and keeps up all the way down to -4° (again ambient). But below -4° ambient it wouldn't be able to keep up anymore...? I would assume (and hope??) that the BMS wouldn't allow any charging current below an internal temp...
  • Post in thread: QO vs Homeline

I have seen Homeline breaker panels that were probably 20+ years old with no issues. We (company I work for) have installed them for nearly 15 years with only one ever failing that I can remember, and that was because there was a "leak" where water ran into the basement through a crack where the...
  • Post in thread: Question about installation with Sol-Ark

Actually, if your batteries support more than 160A you need to do this. That DC breaker is 200A and with derating to 80%, that limits you to 160A. Ask me how I know... :fp2 Suffice it to say that charging at more than 160A results in the DC breakers tripping and causing power outages!
  • Post in thread: My build thread

And I'm sub #6. Figured I may as well join the party. 😆
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

A few things to keep in mind when looking at the whole 200A vs 100A passthrough subject: The goal is usually to have a flicker free transfer to inverter when grid goes down. If this happens you won't find out grid is down, and therefore you won't manually manage peak loads! For a DIY install...
  • Post in thread: Midnite Solar Announced their new 10kw AIO at Intersolar Today

The way closed loop comms works is the batteries give the target charge voltage to the inverter as well as the max charge and discharge amps. There really isn't much else that closed loop comms does. When comms are lost the inverter continues going off of the target values it received last...
