  • Post in thread: Adding DC-DC charger to 12V system, Can my alternator handle it?

I realise this thread is quite old already, but thought I'd briefly report back after a full season with the Renogy 40A unit, including a 5500Km trip from Edmonton to northern California and back. Most of the time I had solar power to keep the house battery charged, but as I got into low-sun...
  • Post in thread: Is Renogy Going Out Of Business?

"CHEAP, GOOD, FAST" PLEASE PICK ANY TWO. Most of us have seen such signs on business walls and it reflects what you said above. "Ya pays ya money, ya takes ya chance". I bought 3 Renogy products over the winter for my travel trailer system with my eyes wide open. I know not to expect...
  • Post in thread: Searching for: Mega fuse holder that bolts directly to battery terminal

Not sure if this suits your particular situation, but I found this arrangement easy enough and cost effective (posted in an earlier thread): I found the Blue Sea less available in Canada and therefore costly when adding US shipping. I bought this MRBF on Amazon.ca...
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

No, full upgrade from 2 x 6v FLA in progress, new 60A SCC and 40A DC-DC charger, so just re-positioning things and re-wiring. Shall post when the lights go back on!
  • Post in thread: MRBF Fuse brands (Canada edition)

Undercrust, I also found the Blue Sea less available in Canada and therefore costly when adding US shipping. I bought this MRBF on Amazon.ca...
  • Post in thread: Renogy dc to dc charger

Chris, I know you prefer Victron, and I won't argue over reputation/reliability, but I wanted 40A and the price difference for me was huge (certainly not $50). Renogy Canada posted a discounted "open box" item for $CA140 (only $US110). The 30A Victron would cost me $CA317. Seduced by price...
  • Post in thread: Renogy 20 amp DC to DC charger

It was idling just for the short duration of the test. Specifically to ensure adequate cooling I have set it up so as to never draw current on idle, only when cruising. Hence the remote control, plus current monitor to ensure it stays within limits.
  • Post in thread: Buy Cells in Canada and the Risk of Cheap Cells?

After much deliberation, I opted not to import from China for all the reasons discussed here and elsewhere, and I am definitely a do-it-yourselfer. For me, the savings barely justified all the rigmarole and uncertainty. Many of the ready made batteries are expensive, but this fellow is very...
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

This ad has run on Kijiji for some months now, selling LiFePO4 battery packs competitively. Assemblies offered are "bare bones" clamped with JBD BMS, no case etc. Over the phone, the fellow in Grande Prairie (AB) seemed very knowledgeable, offering to build and supply in about 3 weeks...
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

Just got my 12V 280Ah battery pack from Grande Prairie yesterday and all looks good so far. Voltage is at 13.34, cells balanced within a millivolt or two. The Xiaoxiang iPhone app shows the same readings as my meter, so apparently accurate, but it is view only. Shall check other options later...
  • Post in thread: You would think that I could use the cam switch as a simple two pole manual transfer switch but NOOOOOO!

This switch turned out pretty easy to join the output poles to a common connection. Inexpensive and easy to wire and pretty much goof proof.
  • Post in thread: Overkill BMS connecting Inverter = short circuit! Help!!

First I tried charging up the battery to 13.32 volts, and tried the pre-charge using a resistor; (graphite pencil was all I had on hand, read 18 ohms), but made no difference. Still showed "short" on the overkill app as the BMS tried to start then switched off immediately. Then I replaced the...
  • Post in thread: Methods to attach MRBF fuse holder to SAE battery post

Not sure if you saw this previous thread: https://diysolarforum.com/threads/searching-for-mega-fuse-holder-that-bolts-directly-to-battery-terminal.62390/page-2 My home-made mount (solid copper) was cheap, easy and works well. I was able to drill exact size holes needed for each bolt (1/4 and...
  • Post in thread: Wires and fuses. Please help me to make sure nothing goes up in flames.

This is mounted with insulated bolt, (hard, non-compressible lexan washer underneath, double heatshrink on the bolt)
  • Post in thread: Adding DC-DC charger to 12V system, Can my alternator handle it?

Renogy said 40% is okay (sounds a bit much to me), but I am going with 25% of my 160A alternator. I can select 20 or 40 amps on the charger. The biggest draw I have now with everything running is 75A. To avoid long-time running on idle and overheating, I want to install an illuminated on/off...
  • Post in thread: Cell voltage imbalance only when fully charged

Okay, just switched to overkill, (which I could not find for iphone last year). It was easy to adjust the start value and is actively balancing now. Maybe it'll do the trick. Thanks for mentioning that Okay, just switched to overkill, (which I could not find for iphone last year). It was...
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

Sorry if I have strayed off topic some. Regarding AB Lithium; after positive remarks from you folks, I wanted to buy their 280Ah battery, but it was out of stock for months, and given all the uncertainty and delays with deliveries from China, opted not to import cells myself. So I responded to...
  • Post in thread: Wires and fuses. Please help me to make sure nothing goes up in flames.

Okay you have at least given me a path forward and saved me from "barking up the wrong tree". Shall take a closer look at the waytek products and re-inspect all the joinery. I appreciate your time and know how.
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

    thanks; new here!
  • Post in thread: SOK vs Renogy Battery Help me choose

Last winter I was in the market for a battery for my solar powered travel trailer. I decided I wanted 200Ah or more and deliberated long and hard over which way to go. I seriously considered Alberta Lithium and Renogy and compared both options with building my own battery with imported cells...
  • Post in thread: Fuse between PWM & battery?

Chris, when I threw the main battery disconnect to work on my setup, the SCC remained energised from the PV and I still had 13.6v across the buss bars. Then I remembered from the manual, "never connect the PV unless a battery is connected". By disconnecting the battery first I had broken that...
  • Post in thread: Connect both negative terminals together on B2B charger?

Because the grounding connection between my truck and trailer has to rely on the seven-pin connector (skinny wire) I realised it would impede the high charging current (40A). I spent the extra money on the 25' isolated ground wire. Probably would not work as well If I had gone non-isolated.
  • Post in thread: You would think that I could use the cam switch as a simple two pole manual transfer switch but NOOOOOO!

I bought the switch purely for A/C service (switching from shore to inverter power). ( Sorry, did not notice that DC service was being considered.) Anyway, I found no documentation but a youtube video showing someone who had actually made jumper wires and connected the output terminals...
  • Post in thread: Small emergency power supply

Regarding Renogy products, I am sure people's experience runs the gamut. When I was shopping, I knew some people had reported problems ranging from faulty operation to inadequate tech support. I have just completed the first full summer season (May-Oct) using a Renogy 60A MPPT controller and a...
  • Post in thread: Alberta Lithium

I have put in an order for a 12v 280Ah battery, hoping to get it in a couple of weeks. It's a leap of faith I know, so I shall post something when I know more. Browneye urged me to build, but the Chinese suppliers had suspended deliveries here and I do not want to wait around hoping for...
  • Post in thread: On my fourth alternator....??

This video is interesting. I have a DC-DC 40A working very well, but I'd be interested to hear other members' opinions on this approach.
  • Post in thread: SOK vs Renogy Battery Help me choose

The BMS is the JBD brand, but I don't know about the cells. My battery looks exactly as pictured in the ad. If you respond to the ad I expect Elias will answer you. He seems to be very knowledgeable.
  • Post in thread: Hello from Alberta, Canada

It does feel like a bit of a minefield to the uninitiated doesn't it? So far I have only communicated with your supplier Steve (Shenzhen Luyuan Technology Co., Ltd.) and a supplier recommended by "off-grid-grid garage" guy (Shenzhen Qishou Technology Co., Ltd.). Both quote a price (about $125...
  • Post in thread: Overkill BMS connecting Inverter = short circuit! Help!!

I don't have a CV/CC supply, just an old school charger for FLA. The battery is receiving solar charge from the SCC as we speak, so I should be able to see if bringing up the voltage helps. Thanks for the suggestion. Also, just connected the inverter to a FLA deep cycle battery (showing 12.5v...
  • Post in thread: JBD BMS app does not work

Okay got the full Xiaoxiang full app, and looks good (thank you). Lots of settings to be entered, but like Luther72 I'd like to find a step by step guide to choosing what to enter. (my first LiFePO4 battery). I expect all this has been covered in threads before, but would really appreciate...
