  • Post in thread: Anyone have advice for a generator powered battery charger?

I got this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DP3X16F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Same as recommended by Battle Born for LiFePO4 batteries. I can verify it does indeed back off the amps as full charge approaches. So look for something that has multi stage...

No. Lithium Ion is a different chemistry.
  • Post in thread: Tonight's News

This doesn't surprise me, same thing been going on in storm prone coastal areas. Hurricane insurance, IF you can get it, is really expensive. For high risk areas, they just will not write a new policy.
  • Post in thread: Interfacing with Valence built in monitoring

Sorry, didn't see the reply sooner. So it looks like it's time to get sniffing on my battery then. Or figure out the checksum... So to set up the sniffer, just need another USB/RS-485 adapter (without the power line connected) and connector for the other plug on the battery side. Fire up the...

Yes, we were. A standard slug just mushrooms when hitting plate, much like a 22LR would. The plate might bend, but the slug will not make a hole in it. At least, that has been my experience when trying some of these things.
  • Post in thread: Ac chargers for lithium batteries

I got one to these for when I'm in a hurry or not getting enough sun and need to run off generator to charge. It's a 60 amp charger. They also make a smaller ones. Charges my Valence battery (LiFePO4, 137AH) in about 2.5 hours. They make models for LiFePO4 and SLA, so make sure the model...
  • Post in thread: Battery Advice

400 watts of solar might fully charge 1 of those from empty in a day, but it needs to be really sunny and long. Winter will be an issue. I just went from a SOC of 3% to 50% on a single U27-12XP with 200 watts of solar, full sun and 4 hours, then the clouds rolled in. It averaged about 12ah...
  • Post in thread: Valence U27-12XP lessons learnt...

If one of the cells in the battery is a bit weak, the voltage for the battery will have a hard time getting to 14.5 unless you go pretty high on the remaining cells, at which point, balancing kicks in and brings the other cells down to the level of the weak one.
  • Post in thread: Valence U27-12XP 12 volt 138Ah

The rating you select depends on your charger and loads you intend to run and are fused for. The battery itself can do 150 amps for discharge and can be charged at 70 amps.
  • Post in thread: In search of LiFePo4 battery charger for RV

The PD9100L series can be connected in series to get to 24v.
  • Post in thread: Valence U27-12XP lessons learnt...

Measure the voltage with the Battery Tender running. Is it 14.6 or 13.6? From the link, it appears you have the right charger. Just verify you have in on the LiFePO4 setting.
  • Post in thread: Valence 12V 138Ah Valence Lithium Phosphate Batteries (2)

While your are working with a single battery, there's no need to mess with the data cables. When used in series or parallel, then hooking up the data cables may allow the BMS in each battery to communicate with the others. What the on board BMS can actually do without the External BMS is a bit...
  • Post in thread: Unstable Grid

For short outages, it may be more cost effective to get UPS units for "critical" loads. I looked at doing something like you are thinking about and sizing a system to run microwaves, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, HVAC, ect for any length of time gets expensive fast especially if you get UL...
  • Post in thread: Valence batteries not lasting long at all

Will take a while, but will work.
  • Post in thread: Valence 12V 138Ah Valence Lithium Phosphate Batteries (2)

How high is the blister? That certainly looks like a hot spot, but hard to tell.
  • Post in thread: Power Usage for Refrigerator

I ran my 17CF top door freezer/fridge (no ice maker or water dispenser) for 16 hours on battery alone. Used 1383wh. Could have gone a bit longer, battery was at 3%.
  • Post in thread: SOC Chart for Lifepo4

According to the log from the Valance Software, my battery hit 20% SOC at 12.6 volts. That was during a defrost cycle on the fridge, so had a 35 amp load during that time as well.
  • Post in thread: New of course to Solar and want to specifically build a dedicated Solar and Battery storage system for my home A/C.

You need to provide more details about your AC. Swamp cooler, compressor based, split system? Hugely different power requirements. If compressor based, you are going to need A LOT of batteries and big inverters. If the unit is a heat pump, you get the high power requirements during the...
  • Post in thread: Valence! Awesome video!

Nice to see the guts of a Valence. Well made, not just a bunch of off the shelf parts.
  • Post in thread: LiFePO4 batteries come in a variety of formats

https://www.batteryspace.com/lifepo4rechargeablesinglecells1c-30crate.aspx has many shapes and sizes.
  • Post in thread: Help me to get the amp

    Amps=Watts/volts. So 45/220=.204 amps. At 12 volts, you'll need 3.75 amps to get 45 watts (45/12=3.75)
  • Post in thread: Grounding for a Portable Power Station?

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I would hook up the just the inverter ground lug on one end, then put a plug on the other end with just the ground conductor hooked up.
  • Post in thread: Power station attacks…..

The main issue is that there's nothing a couple of guards can do to prevent someone taking a few shots from a distance at night. Most of the sub stations around here are surrounded by trees. Those that are not, are close to populated areas, so even then returning fire would be risky. Most...
  • Post in thread: Solar Generator for home use

I'm thinking along similar lines. My main use will be just for critical loads during power outages or remote use away from mains power. I had a look at doing something bigger for regular home use, but concluded it just wasn't worth it, plus our HOA will not allow panels on the roof where they...
  • Post in thread: Power station attacks…..

Car doors aren't made from 3/8" plate. Slugs do indeed go right through thinner stuff.
  • Post in thread: best way to charge a Valence battery with no bms?

A standard charger can be used in a pinch, but it's better to get something designed for the LiFePO4 chemistry. I have a Progressive Dynamics charger that works well...
  • Post in thread: Discharge capacity testing

It depends on what you want to know. To understand real run time with devices that cycle, it may be better to hook up the fridge or dehumidifier, and just let it go till a cell hits 3 volts (or whatever you want to define as the lowest acceptable voltage before cutting off the loads) and see how...
  • Post in thread: Power station attacks…..

Slug would be too big in diameter and just put a dent in the case unless it was tungsten sabot dart or some other harder metal and shaped properly. 5.56 FMJ will go through 3/8 plate pretty easily, as do hollow points and soft tip rounds. Add green tips and go up to 308 or 30-06. Pretty easy...
  • Post in thread: Valence U27-12XP 12 volt 138Ah

I don't see any issues with that. Guess we'll see if the rest of the collective has to say....
  • Post in thread: Help with emergency setup

One thing to keep in mind is portability and structural damage that may occur during a hurricane. Having a big, fixed system assumes you still have a roof, solar panels and intact electrical wiring when it's over. When Fran came through North Carolina, there were sections of town where the...
