So now that I've replaced my laptop and gotten some of my data over, I can finally post some pictures of what I've been doing out here in the woods.
So when I bought this place the electrical system was seriously borked, and I didn't know any better. I knew enough to know that a piece of...
Day More! Time to start getting things accomplished!
So I wanted something that would be durable and non-conductive, so I got a few cans of truck bed liner and started hosing it down. After getting a new piece of steel and re-designing the face plate (Class-T fuses are HUGE!!!) the test fit...
So I started with preliminary designs and ideas in another thread, and then wouldn't ya know it a 1998 Coleman Pop-Up camper suddenly showed up in my driveway!
According to the seller everything works!
Except that the propane is disconnected...
The battery was half hooked up backwards and...
Trying to make instruction sheets on how to use the system in a way that Idiots... err... Jocks... err NEPHEWS can understand.
All the time figuring out WHICH trees to drop.
Leaves!!!!
So I needed a 24v case capable of 300Ah cells and Seplos wanted about $800 for their case and the special cables but no low temp cutoff, no heaters, no active cooling... weeeelllll... I have a welder!
So first I got out the paints and painted them up real pretty... then drilled them like they'd...
So it seems to me there are basically 3 kids of people in the solar world; those who WORK with solar (installers, grid tie folks, etc.), those who USE solar (Tiny Homes, cabins, RV life, etc.), and those who PLAY with solar (people on a really tight budget, learners, old timers, etc.). For...
It really makes a LOT more sense once you actually look at the word...
Poly - Many, More than One
Ticks - Blood sucking parasites, members of the Arachnid family
Politics!
As promised, a few pictures...
Fire ring;
Built: Spring 2018
First burn: Fall 2023
Fsking burn bans!
Foundation for the laundry room is all ready to go. I'll pick up the kit on Tuesday afternoon. And 19 pieces of foam board insulation, and 22 pieces of 1/4" plywood, 8 sheets of steel...
So I decided to raid my spare parts bins and make a new briefcase solar gen since I seem to have left my Jackery up at the camp somehow. I got most everything done today save the 120v outlet (that I thought I had the parts for in hand), just needed a little more cable management.
2x 40Ah...
Blurb time!
Well, I'll start the default answer to these questions and we can work from there. Here's you To-Do list:
1: Power audit! This will give you some important information on how big your inverter needs to be as well as how much battery capacity you'll need. There is a link in the FAQ...
I've paid the "Early Adopter" tax quite a bit, most of my solar projects were on their 3rd or 4th iteration before I knew this forum existed and the resources at the time were quite limited. Back then a Mid-Grade MPPT controller was MidNite and cost a few hundred bucks.
I wouldn't call it a...
Currently a placeholder while I wait for the parts, but my youngest nephew is going to be heading to Lineman's school in Idaho in a couple months, so I thought I'd grab him for a couple days and make him a proper "Work Truck Solar Generator".
I came across this box the other day and things just...
I'll buy Victron equipment AFTER the end of the world happens AND hell freezes over AND I spend money on an Apple computer again.
I just can't bring myself to spend so much more for the color blue when you have much more capable units made by other manufacturers that work just fine and don't...
Please don't. There's still a large community of 12v fans out here. If anything maybe just update with newer products. Same with the 24v systems.
Van builds, RV's, solar generator builds you can actually carry around, utility sheds, small cabins, campers, utility trailers. There's a lot of...
Sadly reality often strikes and when you have to choose Tier-1 vs Tier-2 or Tier-3, price really becomes a thing. Do I want to get that Victron 100a SCC or do I want to get that HQST, panels, batteries, and an inverter for about the same cost?
Just saying there's a line between doing...
Well it all finally got together (for the most part) today, much nicer looking wiring inside. Re-wiring that push button was a real PITA but it worked.
Oddity, when I turned the BMS back on it just sat there beeping and buzzing at me. I had to look it up and found another thread on here with...
Oh GODS NO! I've been to various parts of Asia many times over the year and it's always hot & sweaty & miserable. Add in that I'm 6'5", and wear a size 15w boot, I'm always terrified of stepping on someone whenever I get ashore! :ROFLMAO:
So the Karen story (now that I have a proper keyboard in hand) was just ... yeah...
So I leave my brother's house near Seattle about 6am running on about 4 hours of sleep and I've got an 8 hour drive ahead of me to get here. About 3/4 of the way I'm fading fast, weaving in and out of my lane...
Well, nothing on this thing is square or straight and that pitch plus slick steel was a pain, but at least it has a roof finally!
It's not perfect by any means but it's enough that I can get the little propane heater going after 4+ years and get the inside drying out. If I can find my stupid...
And that would be a good reason to return that speaker wire and get proper rated stuff. The insulation on speaker wire isn't rated for higher voltages, it's not very durable, and has really bad (ambient) heat and UV resistance. Don't do it, get AC rated stuff.
