    Good forecasting app for solar

I’ve been using “Willy Weather” App for may years for figuring out how the weather would be for wind when I was boating. The last few years I’ve also been using it for solar. Select the UV at the bottom and you’ll see three days into the future. It’s been amazingly accurate for solar energy.

    Cut that high speed cable!

Several years ago I got fed up with over priced cable with poor quality service and found a deal with T-Mobile high speed home internet. At $50 a month and no data caps it was a deal. It worked fine for a few years but others found out about it and it started to slow down to crawl 20Mbps or much...

New Solar Assistant beta 2024-04-05 and stable 2024-01-23 software released

Anyone on the new stable yet? I’ll wait a bit myself. If anyone is a gremlin catcher, it’s me🥴

    Test the MOSFETs?

I heard of mosfets getting fused closed. It’s been a long time since any of my batteries have been triggered, since they were commissioned. Would it be a good idea to test each bms? Could I just turn off the charge state in each bms in my battery bank one at a time and note if the current at...

    What’s your sine….wave?

I’m kinda curious what different inverter’s sine waves look like and what your grid looks like. The first picture is twin, first generation, MPP LV 6548 (247 volt) low load. The second picture is with 6000 watt load (clothes dryer 246 volts) and the last is grid. Between line and neutral didn’t...

Wind storm in CA, disconnected from grid

I manually disconnected from the grid to protect my system. A year or so ago when the wind blew hard I noticed voltage spikes, probably from lines slapping together. That time one inverter went into fault with no codes available, my assumption was it wasn’t happy about the weird supply. I was...

What are your JK charge under temperature protection RECOVERY (UTPR) settings?

I have the UTP at 0 C and the UTPR at 5 C. I’m looking to narrow the spread by lowering the recovery to 1or 2 C (33.8 or 35.6F). It’s actually quite a difference when I relate to Fahrenheit. Is there a minimum difference for the BMS functionality?

    What’s with this battery spacing?

Came across this installation. I can’t find any documentation on requiring this much spacing. The whole installation is kind weird. The nice; 3each Sol-Ark 15k on the exterior, 25kw propane generator, 25kw ground mount. I question the spacing, no master DC disconnect inside or exterior, no...

    Small fuses, big problems.

Alright, it’s not as dramatic as meltdown of a T class fuse holder but more of a track down nuisance that I want to bring to light. Some months back I ran into a Solar Assistant and and a shunt issue. They would error or momentarily fail. They had separate sources but had one thing in common...

    Solar Assistant flatlined

A strange thing happened when I went to look at SA on my phone app. It had trouble loading and when I did it just had a flat line and no activity. Restarted my phone and the same. Rebooted SA through the app and when it restarted everything was working again, just some data missing. Anyone else...

    Need cheap 12V current dump

I need a good cheap convenient method of dumping loads from a 300 Ah 12V Lifepo4 battery. 40 to 75 amps continuously. The battery has an Overkill 130amp bms that’s enclosed so there’s no sense in pushing it. It’s for the trolling motor in 16’ Lund and there’s been a more than a few times that...

    JK bms fast(er) SOC learn

I’m reasonably satisfied with my JK’s…now. I thought I had a problem because my third battery commissioning went a little rougher than the first two JK’s. Something was definitely different with the third and newest bms. The first thing that popped up was the yellow flashing “Change password in...

2023-08-16 Solar Assistant update. But take note.

Lost inverter temperature data on Votronic inverter MPP LV6548. If this is important to you (ME!) don’t update! Edit see below

Have you checked your cell terminals lately?

I was shocked(astonished ?) by the looseness of a number of my cell terminal nuts even though I had re-torque them days after the original assembly. Three different 16s batteries but two had similarities and similar issues. None of the batteries had any electrical issues(yet), beautiful balance...

This may be a prudent time to get spares.

There’s some weirdness building and global tensions so it might be a good time to get what you need now. I’m considering buying an extra inverter but buying a pair deal thats actually is still cheaper than one 280ah battery. Tier one inverters are so cheap that for intensive purposes…disposable...

So much for perfection - JK bms

After having a pretty good run with two JK bms’s, I added a third bms & battery for 16 cell batteries. The first two are are models JK-B2A24S20P (24cell version) and the only issue I can see is some strange occasional “Abnormal release of current sensor” in the log file but doesn’t seem to have...

    What’s your daily SOC range?

I recently just added a third battery to the bank and the result was something I hadn’t given much thought to. A reduced depth of discharge which means a higher average state of charge. As you may know, that keeping a higher state of charge is detrimental for the long term for Lifepo4. Looking...

Some know enough to be dangerous

A friend asked me to drop by and have a look at his system because he’s having some problems. The guy is highly intelligent so I’m ASS-U-ME-ing that he knows what he’s doing. Well, upon entering his equipment room I was so taken aback that it must have shown on my face because he looked at me...

Watching water boil+paint dry = first charge

Commissioned my third battery build and like always a little drama. The batteries arrived from Eel batteries in 4 days and 4 of the sixteen cells were damaged. They were dropped upside down and the 2 bolt terminals were bent almost touching the case and others were dented by an nimrod that...

Battery build #3 gets commissioned tomorrow!

Dual module(so I can move the beast) compressed (squeeze box). This one will be on a rolling bace and enclosed with a differential thermostat controled cooling fan. Air is only circulated if the air is cooler than the cells and if needed. The voltage and current will slowly increase and the JK...

What’s the hot side of a JK?

I’m running the JK B2A20S-20P’s and now I’m about to commission #3. The previous two are mounted large flat side toward the vertical mounting surface (wood) with 3/8” spacers so that convection cooling can occur. The thing is now if I can do the same thing except flip it bump side with spacers...

Is 3.65 vpc even necessary for top balance?

In the past I’ve got all the cells to 3.65 as a group. Now as I’m about to commission another diy battery I was wondering why bother going higher if they’ll never see more than 3.45 vpc in use and they will always have plenty of balance current and time to bring the delta under.003 with every...

20 Eve 280 cells and one ringer

I’ve got 20 cells that just arrived and all were made in February of 2022 so they are about a 1 year and 4 months old. The inspection labels were all 281xxxmah. All arrived with internal resistance of .19 to .20 m ohms all have a voltage of 3.295 +- .002 except for one at 3.204 though the...

Do you always cringe when you see your packages are shipped through FedEx?

Always late, packages shipped out at the same time arrive up to three different deliveries. Delayed exception usually means lost or you’re going to be picking it up at god knows where three days later. Oh lord not again. BOHICA

I got bored, so I spent more money Lifepo4

Everything’s working better than can be hoped for and the system is virtually running autonomously. I’m looking towards the future and one can never have too much battery. Just bought 16 cells with flexible busses, JK bms, fast blow fuse & holder, die spring for compression and already have all...

    Autonomous SOC control Solar Assistant

The end game is as little system interaction as possible. And I’m getting close. The goal is to use the grid as little as possible and only during off peak rates as needed to supplement solar if insufficient because of weather or high demand. Also maintain optimal state of charge for emergency...

How many of you open the grid mains if there’s lightning?

Just got a lightning warning and disconnected from the grid. I have a surge arrestor between the grid and the inverter but I figured I just gave my system a little more space and safety. There’s another arrestor in the distribution center to protect from internal surges.

    Watts247 200 amp breaker

I had twin Buss brand breakers but I really want a double pole breaker. Opened up the Watts247 and it looks way overkill for a 55v system with the huge “arc chute”. Rigged up a box to put it in, tined buss bar and precharge button(DPDT) and indicator lamp. The buss can hold up the eight lugs...

“Abnormal release of current sensor” Ignore it?

Under the perfect conditions both JK-B2A24S20P bms’s have this report in the system log; “Abnormal current sensor” then “Abnormal release of current sensor”. It seems to happen in float (54V) and cloudy conditions (sun poking in and out) combined with something turning on like a coffee maker or...

FYI, bad JK RS485 modules are out there.

It was driving me crazy trying to get Solar Assistant to connect to two JK bms’s. Every port combination/option, every plug in the usb power hub, every port in the pie, no joy. Then I remembered that I’d ordered extras modules and adapters. Tried another one. Bingo! Instant success! Order one...

Top balancing, try not to laugh

I had a 2P-16S that used one Daly bms that was giving me trouble so I elected to split bank in two and use two JK’s. Brought them down to 20% SOC and rearranged them. JK’s were flawless in setup and operation but my problems started when I got the cells above 3.4 volts. The balance went crazy...

Rigid or soft cell spacers in compressed assembly

I have two battery assemblies that are in a spring fixtures using .045” silicone spacers between cells & ends. I’m building more battery assemblies and I’m wondering if a more rigid spacer like Formica would be better for the cells. That way a proud irregularity on one cell would be less likely...

Solar assistant stopped seeing second inverter with direct cable

Well things were working fine, but in wanted to switch around the order of the two inverters (MPP LV6548). SA was seeing the slave as numbers one. This happened once before and I just switch around the direct cables and plugged the master in first. I did the plug swap at the pie unit since I...

    Sun tracking app

I wish I had this a long time ago. I found an app called “Sunnytrack” that lets you can stand where you plan to put your panels and view through the phone the suns path at current day or at any point in time during the year. It shows the arc/path across the sky for winter and summer solstice. It...
